If that is suddenly called bad writing, then practically every game that had the story call for a death has bad writing. It isn't even possible at this point for every gameplay mechanic to be part of the story. How often does a simple slash actually wound a character in gameplay? It lowers hitpoints, but it sure doesn't slow anyone down. However, once you get into a cutscene someone getting slashed is a serious injury. Unless we want developers to start telling stories in the same way Fable 2 does, this isn't bad writing. It's standard fare.
Except that a majority of the games I've played DON'T work like this so... GG. Injuries being represented by hitpoints is something I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on because there's not an elegant way to do it. If your characters can REVERSE DEATH ITSELF you better have a reason why I can't do it when a character dies for srs.

I understand that saying anything bad about Final Fantasy games shuts off the logic part of people's brains, but it's about time you give up on this.

Hell, in the case where you can bring people back from the dead with an item, explaining why it doesn't work is pretty goddamn easy. Hell, you don't even need a real explanation... here's a few

**uses revive** "OMG, why didn't it work!?"
"I left all the revives in my other pants, sorry guys"
"The body is too badly damaged"
"The soul itself has been destroyed"
"They're not really dead they're [insert status condition that might as well be death but implies you have to do something else to bring them back, or there's no way to do it]"

It's really that simple to explain it.

Phoenix Downs are for reviving KO'd people, not dead ones. Its the same as Pokemon, characters get knocked out when they get to 0hp. Honestly, it says it in the description.
This guys hit it on the ball, otherwise people would be using phoenix downs all the time

The plural of Phoenix Down is Phoenix Down.

The item in Final Fantasy is referring to 'down' as
Fine, soft, fluffy feathers forming the first plumage of a young bird and underlying the contour feathers in certain adult birds.
In other words, it's the soft under-feathers on a bird, in this case the bird happens to be a Phoenix.

One cannot use a Phoenix Down on someone. They simply use the down feathers of a Phoenix on the afflicted party member.

Sorry, pet peeve of mine...

You may now return to your regularly scheduled FFVII thread.

Good lord. Way to dismiss my point with absolutely no explanation at all. I also enjoy your blind assumption to fanboyism when I cited examples from other series as well.

Seems like you have a logical resolution there, but it completely dissolves the dramatic tension surrounding a death. Cloud jumps down to her limp body in utter defeat before a battle is prompted. Do you really think it would help the scene to throw in a convoluted explanation why all of your doohickeys suddenly no longer work? Of course not, it would drag what many consider to be THE pivotal moment in a game. Sometimes the drama itself has to carry the work.

Guess no one in here has seen the directors cut where Cloud puts a Phoenix Down back in his pocket saying "well she wasn't that much use anyway..."

But wasn't there a "revive" spell within that Life materia? Don't hear of many people being "revived" from knock out. More like from death....

But I don't care, Sepiroth is bad ass and they all know it. If he wants you dead aint nothing going to save you. And Aires was skylarking around like she wanted to go down for good! Maybe Squares explanation is well it's a f***en big sword so don't argue!
