1- americans don´t like sports where you can´t use your hands
2- the eternal rivalry between U.S.A and England.
As a ¨soccer¨(the real football) fan I would say that americans are just missing the greatest and prettiest sport on earth!!!

This has probably been done to death, but I couldn't find it.

So what is with all the hate for the World Cup?

I honestly can't understand it. I certainly prefer other sports over it, but I don't get the rabid rage over it that I see a lot of Americans have.
I think it's sort of how the US gets all freaky over Baseball (even if politics have slowed it down a lot) but the rest of the world has a sort of "meh" attitude about it, in part because of the money needed to play it seriously.

As several people have pointed out, we actually do okay when it comes to Soccor, and field very competitive teams. The US tends to be pretty good at anything it gets involved in, in a general sense despite the rhetoric (yes I am aware there have been exceptions).

I think in the end it's just not all that interesting because few people play it here, and it got tied down into the whole "Soccor Mom" thing as a kiddie sport. In the US our poor tend to mostly play Basketball rather than soccor. I suspect in part because more people in the US have access to blacktop than fields.

I also think some of the attitudes involved around the world seriously grate. For example the current World Cup was pretty much an exercise in obnoxiousness with the whole Vulvazela thing and a complete disinterest in enforcing any kind of decorum. Granted the rest of the world seemed rather peeved about this also going by the reports I'm receiving, but the bottom line is that it seems that international soccor is gaining sort of a reputation in the US as being a draw for the dregs of humanity.

To put things into perspective, someone made a crack about hillbillies and American Football (in referance to the Packers I believe). There is actually some truth to that, however consider that as wild as they might get they don't generally interfere with the game itself, and remain respectfully silent for the national anthem

Why do people start threads asking why something that isn't true, is true?
This^

Why does everyone jump on the bandwagon? I find this thread to be quite uninformed (to say the least).

Soccer is popular here! Maybe not as popular as Football, but it's a young sport for the US. Our US team did wonderfully in the World Cup this year.

I've seen people go crazy over soccer here. We love soccer.

Simple: they stink(or at least they aren't good enough to win the world cup; ... but still maybe in 2014 things will change)
All that time they were used to football, then us Europeans came up with this weird sport called soccer, in which you can't tackle anyone.

To me, it's just a bunch of people briskly running up and down a field, while some guy occasionally kicks a ball
You sir, just described how American Football looks like.
Ah, but in American football, they THROW it, and then somebody has to catch it, and then everybody has to smack the shit out of the guy with the ball. And also, these people are all inhuman monsters jacked up on 'roids. Much more interesting than soccer.
Except that your football is actually and egghand or something like that. Very rarely anyone uses the feet.

Also for those of you you cry out "about American Football players were pads they are pussies."

HALF A TON OF HURT

At 5 ft. 11 in. and 199 pounds, Marcus Trufant is an average-size NFL defensive back (DB). Those stats don't stand out in a league where more than 500 players weighed 300-plus pounds at the 2006 training camps. But a DB's mass combined with his speed -- on average, 4.56 seconds for the 40-yard dash -- can produce up to 1600 pounds of tackling force, according to Timothy Gay, a physics professor at the University of Nebraska and author of The Physics of Football.

For those claiming American Football is only popular in America do some research.

I actually don't know anyone who didn't watch at least part of the world cup and I live in Florida. It may not be everyone's favorite sport here, but we all like to cheer America on in any international sporting event.

Actually, could someone explain why Italy is so special? It seems like 90% of soccer memorabilia I see sold around here says Italia on it.
Because Italia fans are CRAZY, and it is awesome. Look up Italia anthem on youtube, watch those people sing their national song and you'll get why people are nuts for Italia. The pride is overflowing.
Actually, the fact that Italy were the defending champions this year might have more to do with it.

Americans don't hate Soccer I actullly like watching it with my uncle. The World Cup is great (Go Brazil!) and is really fun to watch. So I think you skiped to conclusions to quickly, oh and why does the world think we Americans don't like soccer? Is it becuase it isn't our biggest sport? Or is it becuase we don't call it Football?

and then go watch baseball which makes NO SENSE
It makes a good deal of sense though. People like watching baseball because it builds tension. Every pitch is important because every pitch can change the game. It's not something where you watch the action so much as wait for it and wait for it and wait for it and wait for it and CRACK! A hit! Wait, no, a foul! Fuck! Even if conceptually baseball is less interesting, it's much better paced.

I'm American and I absolutely love football, I'm watching the Cup right now. Unlike our passtimes of Baseball and American football I like football since it is really the only sport you can still watch on tv and still be entertained by it. Baseball is only fun if you're in the stadium or playing it yourself (it's the energy in the atmosphere that makes it great) and American football is just lousy on tv, most of the sportscasters suck the fun out of it and it's just so dull. So much of the energy transfers in football that watching it at home is still watered down but it is still deeply entertaining.

Well, you should live here before you say that, walking into any sports bar and everyone was glued to the screen advertising football (I'm going to call it by it's proper name from now on).

And I personally don't mind it, like just about every other sport on the planet. Though, admittedly, it does look pretty interesting.

What I can't understand is why we don't call soccer by its real name here in the States? It makes perfect sense to call it football. The sport revolves almost completely around using your feet.

And why the hell is American football even called football? Kick-offs and field goals don't occur that frequently. It should be called Tackleball, since tackling happens a lot of the time. Or does that sound too dirty?
