Why do gamers (people on this website) generally dislike sports?

I don't hate sports, I hate sports commentators - there are few things in this life more annoying than the constant chattering of television commentators during sports coverage. Also I think it's absolutely ridiculous to care about the outcome of a game played by grown men that you are not personally participating in, and I really think it's bloody stupid that sports are considered "important".

And sports games suck, so there's little in the way of crossover there.

I fail to see your point. I currently do swimming and track and enjoy gaming as well. This is a gaming forum, if someone brings up sports, it'll disappear quickly probably because it isn't sports related.

I'm definitely in the like watching sports/hate playing sports camp. Actually, I don't hate playing sports, I'm just not that great, and now that I've left school I'd rather not embarrass myself in front of people. I used to playing rugby. Ahh the good old days...

Oh yes, the question. I think a lot of people who don't like sport will get more into gaming because it's something to do since they are not watching/playing sport. It's also much easier: most people can't play sports in their house, and you don't need to arrange games etc. Perfect for lazy guys like me XD.

Also, the sample crowd at the Escapist are going to show this trend even more if we trust stereotypes - posting on a video game forum doesn't really put me in mind of an athlete.

To sum up - I think you will find more gamers than you think who are interested in sports, just don't expect to find as many who actually participate.

I just don't like sports. My dislike of the activities may stem from childhood experiences of ALWAYS being picked last, never getting the ball and being harassed day in and day out by the people who were physically fit enough to do a good job at them.

For those who don't get the point of sports games and/or are douches about it, you do know there ARE crippled people on this planet who would love to play sports but can't due to their physical/mental ailments, right?

Because gaming is all about sitting down and sporting is all about being active.

Also, many gamers are nerds or ex-nerds who have endured years of being beaten up by muscle-headed sport-obsessed dimwits on the playground while growing up. Me included. Gaming is the leisure activity that you do to get away from all those sports people.
Took the words right out of my mouth.

Maybe it's because deep down we're jealous of the attention jocks get in school, or maybe we wish we were as socially inclined as they are.

That's probably the heart of it actually; gaming is a very individual activity, where most sports are team activities. Introverts game, and extroverts go to the game.

Might have something to do with that this is a GAME RELATED site. Sports are okay just not the main focus here.

I like sports like football (both american and world) and various martial arts. but I also like sitting around doing nothing as well, but as George Carlin once said, "I'm not a sports fanatic but more of a casual obesrver".

1 word FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTBALL!!!!!!! (american that is)

Ravens fan and packers fan for awhile now.

As for why sports are disliked idk I guess the vast majority of people here don't like them. And you'll probably get all the sports fans somewhere else like espn's website or something.

I can watch a game of baseball or basketball...but I just get so damn bored. I am willing to play basketball with friends, but I generally suck at it. So I don't really hate sports, they just aren't my thing.

Off the top of my head the only sport I dislike is American football (though I'm also not a big fan of watching basketball, I do like playing it however). I don't know if this stereotype is all that true to gamers, it's just that team sports (especially those in the EA sports series) get a particularly bad wrap because they are given far more attention within western society than other, more important things.

I honestly don't like sports, I think they are silly and I have no clue why people are paying full men to play a game. I mean, they atleast make a million a year? wtf?!

I like to walk on a tread-mill, or ride my bike around the block a few times. That's my exercise now because my school switched my PE time to my health class.

I play hockey primarily over video games to be honest, in fact I just got back from a 3 day trip to Boston for a tournament earlier today. People I know tend to be into sports and video games, I think ( as many have posted before me have said) that gaming hasn't always been as accepted so some may harbor bad memories.

I've got nothing against sports. My intellect doesn't allow me to side with people who ***** that a 15 million a year contract isn't enough to play a game...

Well one of the stereotypes of a gamer is a shut-in, generally the type of person who wouldn't go out to play sports. Certainly not everyone on this site fits under the stereotype, but lets be honest, stereotypes exist for a reason, even if they are usually exaggerated. You're right in saying that its strange more gamers don't like sports though, because a lot of gamers are competitive, and sports are competitive.

In my case, I don't like sports because I'm not competitive, and likewise I rarely play any multiplayer games unless they are exceptionally fun because I'm not a competitive player; So I'm one of the oddities of the gaming community which extends to my daily life too. I also just find a lot of sports very dull and can't understand the appeal of them, and I especially hate the sports that are 'rough' like Rugby or Football

I do like Tennis though, but only if I'm playing against a friend and s/he isn't a competitive player either and we're only playing for fun. I dislike it when people can't stand to lose, put all their effort into winning and throw quips or insults to the opposite player (even if its only playful it still annoys me). All I want is a casual game.

I also don't understand the people that watch their country playing a sport on TV and get really into it like its really important they win, and swear and shout at the TV. I find that pretty funny, but I'm just sitting there wondering what the big deal is. I don't give a shit if my country wins anything, my country isn't ME. Then again I've never understood patriotism either.
