I'd respond to sports threads if I saw them, but I guess I don't visit this place as often as everyone else. I have played three different sports for upwards of two decades and I'm even part of the fitness group here.

Sports.

Sports video games.

Bleh, that doesn't sit well on the tongue. It's an oxymoron now that I think of it.

Let me clarify.

I don't HATE sports games. I just don't see the point. Sports are one of the few games that are actually more fun in real life than in a virtual medium. Saying you're going to sit down and play sports just makes no sense when you actually get down to it. They belie the very thing they're supposed to be making you want to keep interested in. All-in-all I'll just represent it the way I do at work.

Sports games are not competitive because they're remade every year and never change. If a sports game and an original IP were released on the same day, one week later the sports game would be worth $20 less than the starter-up series on trade-in because there are just too damn many of them. Are they still fun to play? Sure. But are they offering anything new? Very rarely.

And that's why I prefer drunken brawling over Madden 10.

I think the problem any anti-sports person has with the genre is the money. As a culture, Americans spend way more money, not to mention time, on sports than they do on their own lives or their kids lives. If we spent half the money that sports teams get in a year on cancer research or education, I think the world might be a much better place. I am an avid gamer myself, which happens to include some sports. But I wouldn't expect someone to watch me play, let alone play me to play Warhammer 40k. I also would not pay to watch someone play 40k either, no matter how good they are at the game. It seems that sports people are much more voyeuristic than they would like to admit. I just don't understand the thrill of watching someone else play a game I could perfectly well play myself.

And as for sports video game, I play video games to do things I cannot do in the real world. Mass firefights in MW2 or putting on the cape and cowl and kicking some Joker ass, not throwing a fucking football. I can go outside and do that, but if I start playing Favela with my Glock I think people might not like that too much :). The only thing I can see a sports game satisfying is that voyeurism streak again. The "I'm Ray Lewis, Bitches" mentality.

Dishing out the cred:
I watch two sports: baseball and tennis and root for the Yankees (3rd generation Yanksfan).
I played baseball in high school (3rd base) on a state champion team.
Today, I love to kayak, run (4 miles a day), surf, golf and hike. I also get in on the occasional beach volleyball.

So screw anyone that says gamers can be active and into sports. I might be atypical here, however, as I tend to game mostly in just the colder months.

I also know many people who are like me and take part in rigorous activity (MMA, Iron Man) and also game.

I like sports, but I'd rather be playing than watching them.
I can't stand to watch football or anything like that because I have way more fun actually going and doing that.

I love mass generalisations.

I love the way they hiss as thousands of pins are thrust into their balloon-like structure.

Oh and I also love sports.
What are you going to do for your 1K post, it's about to happen.

Cherish it.

I'm just guessing, but I'm betting it's because they can play them. In my case I find sports boring, sure every once in a while something cool might happen but it's too infrequent for me to both getting into it. Also since they make sports video game gamers knowledge might be limited to that making them mostly uninformed on the workings of the sports world, which would make the feel inadequate talking about it.

My favourite sports are Table Tennis, soccer, football (If I'm playing with people as weak as me), and Basketball. I've played almost every sport there is thanks to the education system, but I don't hate them.

Except ringette, that shit can die.

How about this...

I despise watching sports. You sit and watch, yell at the TV when your team doesn't do what you think it should have done. If the wrong team loses, you set your couch ablaze in the street (my tribute to Buckeye fans.) Did I mention the whole drinking correlation?

I like love sports that I can be involved in. My faves are SCUBA diving, rock climbing, snowboarding, and surfing. These aren't team sports, but are sports all the same. At least two of them can be competitive...though not when I do them.

The deciding factor for me (I think) is that if I can't do it, I'm not interested. I like to be actively involved in things. This is also why, if my TV is on, I'd rather have a game in than a show or movie. I want to have something to do with what is on the screen. I think games are more active than watching TV (hence- no interest in watching sports.)

Did this make sense, or what?

I'm likely to go to my mate's place, drink beer, and watch some olympic hockey.. That being said, I'm mainly there for the booze and good company. I'm not very enthusiastic about sports, I don't pay attention to who plays where, or how well team X is doing, but I also don't mind watching it every now and again.
I'm pretty sure I would get bored of watching it on the long run though, but I do find watching european/world championsips, olympics, and other big events enjoyable.

I dunno why the stereotypical gamer would dislike sports. It's a common feat in stereotypical musicians aswell. Maybe there's a connection?
