Why do gamers (people on this website) generally dislike sports?

Also, many gamers are nerds or ex-nerds who have endured years of being beaten up by muscle-headed sport-obsessed dimwits on the playground while growing up. Me included. Gaming is the leisure activity that you do to get away from all those sports people.
I think that's certainly part of it.
I've always found sports boring, and that looooong predates any interest in video games.

It's not the sports themselves but the tension between rival fans

When I was in highschool, I remember so many of breakups and fights happening just because one kid liked Celtics instead of Lakers or something

so while trying to stay as far away from that as possible, naturally developed a personality of avoiding anything sports related

Because my house mates are in a football team. Not even real football, 5-A-Side.
AND THEY DON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT.

I hope they lose today's game and don't get into the Champions League, please oh please oh please.

If I have to hear one more excuse in regards to cleaning because they have 'important training' I will kick the shit out them.

I'm actually a sports fan.

I would consider myself more of a Basketball player/fan than a gamer.
Hah, ninja'd again.
I think we should use some safety measures for ninja's.

I don't know.

I love sports. But I hate watching them, I'd rather be playing them. I guess that's because I didn't play video games until I was 10, so I got an athletic build + interest in sports instead of sitting on the couch all day...

I like sports, actually. I'm a gamer, and most sports, to me, are just games which I also like playing. Sadly I don't have the opportunity to play a sport I'd like to play.

Team sports don't interest me. So PE in school sucked ass.
That said, I do a hell of a lot of (water)sports/outdoors stuff, and play games when I'm stuck inside/have nothing else to do.

just another reason why i detest the label gamer, and question why anyone would want it.
I personal like having the gamer label it makes me feel like I am part of something bigger and part of a huge community.

OT: I hate sports 99% only one I can stand to play is golf. It's that watching them is boring and I rather would not like to be physically injured in numerous ways and potentially die. Yes I am that paranoid.

Being English we had one option through-out school and that was Football(soccer) and i'm crap at it so I grew to detest it. How-ever when we got the chance to play other sports I jumped on the opportunity, I loved playing Hockey and quite enjoyed Rugby.

Now however i've fallen into a real niche sport in the UK and I play American Football, I love it and i'm actually pretty damn good at it. Hell my team were on Sky Sports http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXwrnLOr-nw

But I love playing games too and they will never take a backseat to any sport in my life.

*edit* I forgot about Swimming, I swam daily untill I was fourteen and then at 16 became a swimming teacher, something I have only just given up...

As far as I can tell, there tends to be elitism with regards to sports and people who like them in communities like gaming and musicians. Thankfully, this seems to be a vocal minority, and most people just aren't interested. When I was at university a few years ago a friend and I were both on the committee for the rock music society, yet the rest of the society, who had known us for months or years and been perfectly friendly, would suddenly look at us in disgust when we told them we were going to watch a rugby match. Usually to the tune of "How can you like sports, only idiots like sports." It made me sad, because I knew these were completely ordinary and decent people otherwise, and they had no reason to behave like this other than it being the in thing to do.

Yes, a lot of people (or at least the loudest people) who like sports are complete jerks, but the same can be said for pretty much every group of people EVER. Some sports fans like getting drunk and starting fights, but this is almost always a small minority. I'm a big fan of rugby league, having grown up in a town where everyone follows it, and despite it being a violent aggresive sport the fans are amazing and get on really well. There's bitter rivalries and people can get angry or upset, but even then the fans can usually joke or banter with the other teams' fans. The players also get paid much more sensible wages, too.

Watching sports might not be interesting for everyone, but some people enjoy it, and at least a part of this is how much the teams playing mean to you. I find domestic soccer dull, but I'll watch international games when England play. I don't find American football or rugby union very interesting, even though they aren't very different from rugby league, because I have no opinions on the teams involved. If you don't like sports, that's fine, but don't expect everyone else to agree with you, because they won't, and that only leads to more unnecessary hate.

Finally...

Because there's only enough time to be properly obsessed with one hobby.
I'm afraid this is just wrong. I love playing TF2 whilst listening to the match on the radio, although it causes some strange chatter if I leave the xbox mic on!

Also there is not much common currency with sports on this forum due to the geographical diversity on here. The big sports in Australia are Cricket, Aussie Rules, Rugby League, and Rugby Union. In the USA it's Baseball, American Football, Ice Hockey, Basketball. UK is pretty much all about football (that's soccer to the Yanks and Aussies). A lot of us have no idea what the others are talking about.
