Why do gamers (people on this website) generally dislike sports?

Because Sports are boring and too simple or to repetitive, I always see the same thing happening in sports over and over. I have tried getting into sports when I was little like 10 but it was way too boring. I find games to be much better, for me gaming is about going into a world that is impossible to go to in this time period. I enjoy a wide range of game but I don't like sports games mainly because if I really wanted to I would play them in real life.
The Only sport I like is Bowling, but not even that much.

I never cared much about sports. Mostly cause if you cock-up the entire planet turns against you. At least in games you just respawn.

I dislike people who sit there and watch sports. They complain about video games, yet we're actually doing more physically than they are vegetating on a sofa eating chips and crisps.

I fucking love playing Tennis and Basktball. And I want to go surfing again in summer. ^_^

i hate sports becaue peole get too crazy over em also in sports unlike games if things go bad i cant reload my save or put a cap in my team members ass
this is exactly what is wrong... pcs give people an alternate world, and SOME people get obsessed with their world.

I love sports. Soccer, rugby, cricket, american football (if only they went straight from one phase to the next, instead of taking minutes to get to the bloody point...) etc, etc.

I also love a good computer game. I would say i am above average in sports and pc gaming, but far from great.

Just because you dont get given a ball in a game, doesnt mean you should hate it. it just means you should practice more, not take the easy option of sitting on a chair moving your hands.

Call me biased (i am a soccer referee) but i think there is a happy medium, and this ^ kind of thinking is from someone who wasnt any good at sports, and resorted to "owning some noobs" on computer games.

I fell off with sports as I got older; I used to really like watching football and basketball, but with the change of the times came changes in rules and how the games played, even line-ups (and I got super-hooked on martial arts after playing too many fighting games). Nowadays, every single team has that one person that carries the team (i.e. LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Ray Lewis just to name a few). They get hurt, retire, or flat out leave the team and the rest of the team is nothing short of fucked.

Also, games are too predictable nowadays (especially football); when the offense gets in certain positions you can pretty much bet money on what's gonna happen and you'd win.
thats why you branch out to other sports... internationally

I don't hate sport. If there's something on that interests me, like the six nations, I'll watch it. I enjoy playing basketball too, just the only place I can play at is my school, and there it's dominated by people who give off this detestable air of superiority. If there was a local court, I'd be there all the time, just me, a ball, and a hoop.

I've played games since the SNES and always played sport, from Soccer to Wrestling and Rugby. I think the gamer culture has a stereotype of being a sedimentary lifestyle for people who are not too strong on the physical side and not as active as other people because gaming requires you to sit around for the most part, and, yes, you have the Wii, but, I have yet to see data on actual weight loss from that thing, because you can just sit there and flick your wrist. It's disappointing the generally bad attitude gamers have for sports, I think sports help you as much as game to learn about teamwork and perseverance, so I balance both. I play a lot of games, own all 3 modern consoles, but at the same time I currently do Rugby and Wrestling, so it's a good balance that I think, overall, makes me a healthier person.

I don't hate sports, I hate not being able to participate any longer. After I had knee surgery 6 years ago, I had to choose between playing beer-league hockey (on weeknights) and having a job, because playing on a weeknight would leave me too hurt to work th following day.

I also refuse to WATCH hockey; I'll coach it, I'll ref it, or I'll play it, until I have a child to go and cheer for.

problem is that there is a massive population who are just like this. Maybe not the majority , but a very significant amount of people are like this. I have quite a few friends that don't get out much because they are addicted to that horrible grind session, wow.

But, again, there is also the significant population who can balance games and "outside" (anything without a PC or whatever).

What i have noticed is that most of the people put off by the sport have been influenced by the "jocks". This is why i got into soccer early. I am not a shrimp, but I'm not very muscly. soccer isn't a sport that needs muscles, but instead needs precision, timing and, above all, teamwork. Very few jocks are attracted to soccer, and I loved it from the start.

Try not to group "sports" with "jock sports", because this is ignorance. Just because you have had bad experiences with one sport, look at another, instead of putting all sports in a pile and saying "they are bad"

end second post...

Because gaming is all about sitting down and sporting is all about being active.

Also, many gamers are nerds or ex-nerds who have endured years of being beaten up by muscle-headed sport-obsessed dimwits on the playground while growing up. Me included. Gaming is the leisure activity that you do to get away from all those sports people.
so true. so true. I like playing sports though (even if I suck at it) watching sports bores the shit out of me though.

I've always wondered this. I consider myself a gamer (although I've drifted away from the "hardcore" end of the spectrum) and I love almost all sport.

Exception that proves the rule, I suppose.

I like playing sports, but I don't like sitting in front of a TV and watching others play. It is boring and I got better things to do, like playing games.

I used to play sports alot in my youth but then I grew a brain. In the UK/Ireland soccer is becoming increasingly like a faith based religion.

YOU WILL BE INDOCTRINATED, YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED.

That's the vibe I get from it nowadays.

I used to be more active, six years straight of junior rugby league. Suddenly, sports began to bore me, and I found it way too... hard's not the word I'm looking for, uh, well, games were just more fun.

I don't have a problem with sports, but rather sports fans. I like to have a bit of a kick around in the park, but can't understand why anyone would want to watch this activity passively. What really narks me off about sports fans is the way they take credit for an activity they took no part in. I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone into the canteen at work to hear some fat blithering idiot droning on about how "We kicked your arse, we did this, we did that". No pal, a couple of dozen guys you never met did that, YOU sat on your fat arse guzzling beer, eating peanuts, shouting at the telly and pissing off everyone in a half-mile radius.
I am generalising, but I'm fairly confident everyone reading this will have had similar experiences.
