I find them annoying, excruciatingly flippant.... Brash, loud, superficial and my god.... The fucking singing....

It grates on my nerves.

Now.

Shocker. I really enjoyed Repo: The Genetic Opera, and, of course, The Phantom of the Opera.

They're exceptions because they were actually rather awesome.

I admit that I just fast forward everyone else's screeching to get the bits with the Phantom in it :p

And Repo...that was just class.

I don't mind musicals as long as they don't have musicals in the title.
So that means High School Mu... *Sephiroth1991 Gives me an evil look*

Ok...so it does... =(
Well i wouldn't say to a person who likes it that its a pile of shit, but it was not the type of musical that i would call ok, for me it was all terrible.
Maybe i should of worded my quote differently, Because i hate it as well

If they want to dance on a raining street corner swinging an umbrella around they are more than welcome to get wet, I on the other hand believe in holding the umbrella above my head, and possibly humming a tune. One lives in a fantasy land that doesn't do much good to entertain, educate or anything else ... totally useless so it must be Art. The other lives in the real world, where people don't go singing in the rain unless they're under the age of 30 and in a good mood, and even then a few will be hit by lightening in the attempt. I like what I watch to make atleast a little sense, or if its going to go off key, go way off. (E.G: Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Where the Buffalo Roam) And even then, you don't need to sing about it.

So I was just wondering why guys don't like musicals.
Repo was an opera (the only one I managed to watch, which was decent), and you are talking about musicals. There is a difference...

Some musicals I like (South Park Movie, Tenacious D), but a lot of them are just annoying. Operas are even worse... I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people singing instead of talking annoys me to death...
Just because something has the word opera in its title doesn't mean its an opera. Just like Phantom of the Opera.
Clearly you have never seen an actual opera, which is just singing, no dialogue.
Also, Reefer Madness is a hilarious musical. The first bit of it is a little bit boring, but towards the end it's just amazing!

I hate musicals.

Except for Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. That one was heavenly golden glory from the depths of hell.

Musicals have their own music which, more often than not, is disgustingly horrible (and you have to pay attention to the lyrics dammit!). But that's just my opinion.

because it is not MANLY!
throw in some axes and blood and an explosion (actually that sounds like it would be fun to watch)
Musicals are usually of a daintiness and about love. that is not entertaining to many males.

I go to a local G&S performance annually, and I can't think of a single reason why anybody in the world wouldn't. Except for Yeomen of the Guard. Nothing worked oot for anybody in that one, except for one guy who was a massive douche. Pirates of Penzance makes up for it, though, and aboot a million times at that.

I'm a musical fan, and so are quite a few of my friends, but i've found that very few of my friends who are male actually like musicals. Even though there are some out there that aren't hugely girly (such as Sweeney Todd and Repo! The Genetic Opera)

I'm currently doing my degree in theatre studies and I never understood why musicals are a feminine thing. But that does not mean I like them by any means. Next year I'm writing a 30,000 word dissertation on my hatred of musical theatre. Musicals are manufactures, recycled, reimagined and overused shallow, hollow crap. There is real theatre out there with real, compelling storylines and great acting. Musical theatre doesn't require a good script or acting, just flashing lights, elaborate costume and a theatre with decent acoustics. As far as I'm concerned, musical theatre is making good theatre obsolete in the eyes of the general public and it's a massive shame
Musical theatre is a treat for the eyes, nothing more

I like musicals and I'm a man. I have never heard of the idea that most men do not like musicals, although admittably at least one musical I have been to see had a largely female audience (Sound of Music) although that may have been more about the subject matter of that particular musical than anything else...

I don't have anything against musicals, I just don't like them generally

I, personally, find that quite often the plot is compromised for the inclusion of music, and showtunes are a genre that, whilst I don't hate them, is just...not me

I can see why you'd say a lot of them are unoriginal. But you can't say that all of them are. There are plenty of musicals out there with original plots.

For me, it's sort of weird. I've been in theater since fifth grade, which was 10/11. I absolutely LOVE performing on stage.

Sit me in a chair out in the auditorium, and I get bored faster than a piece of wood. I just lose interest really quickly.

Yeah, I know that... and I don't remember any talking that wasn't in singing form in Repo. Clearly you are one of those people that is never wrong. Plus Phantom of the Opera is obviously not an Opera... It says it is at an opera, not that it was one...

There are plenty of fantastically awesome musicals out there. And some have plenty to offer for manly men, like The Producers. Uma Thurman never looked so lovely:

Hit the nail right on the head there.

West Side Story is masculinity stripped down to its purest, most concentrated elements and displayed on the screen in raw, dazzling fashion. It's so masculine that there's even a guy in it called "Action". Your male friends just don't know where the action is. They're probably all single, too.
Pfff, there's only one man who's called Action who is manlier than the manliest man, and his name is Action Hank:

I can't disagree with you there. In my disertation I have to provide both sides of the argument and must admit that musicals like Sweeney Todd were and still are fun and original
But when you look at shit like Cats and The Lion King, I can't help but just see the Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber of the theatre world. The west end and Broadway are stealing potential theatre-lovers and making the satisfied with simple flashy musicals when they could be wowed by the RSC and so on
