I'm a guy, and I'm really into drama and music. So really, I'm on the completely opposite side.

I saw Cats in London one time as a promise she would come and watch 'Star Wars - The Phantom Menace' when it was released.
I had the shitty end of the deal as I hated every second of it.

I hate musicals. I don't like show music and I find that suddenly bursting into song and dance makes everything too painfully stupid for me to watch. Sweeny Todd, for example, had a good basic premise for a movie. The songs and silliness ruined it for me.

Well without trudging through every post in this topic and just injecting my own opinion on the matter. I do believe that it is a matter of personal interest. I personally do not like sitting through televised versions of musicals, however i would love to see them in person. Although i do not actively seek out and attend such events, as my personal interests in video games and movies (non-musicals) pique my interest moreso, and therefore gain my monetary attention as well as my personal attention.

It's hard to say...lack of Manly subjects? There are a few I liked:

Phantom of the Opera*
Jekyll and Hyde*
Sweeny Todd
Urine Town*
Repo: The Genetic Opera

The ones with Asterisks indicate musicals I've heard off-screen. I have the original cast recordings of Phantom and Jekyll & Hyde. Saw Urine Town at the local CC. I'm trying to find Nosferatu and Shoggoth on the Roof >.<

Personal taste really, I just think singing is extremely overrated in movies or on a stage(mind you I also think plays are boring). And yes I saw Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and I thought it would have been better without all the singing.

Some musicals are alright (Blue Brothers, that one Buffy episode, Dr Horrible, Southpark Movie, Disney films) but these are on the whole male focused musicals, the majority of musicals are effectively "Chick Flicks".

I find random singing and dancing on the whole annoying so some explanation is needed for it (Blues Brothers all the singing is part of the story, Buffy they were cursed by a Demon), or a greater suspencion of disbelief (such as cartoons, webblog themed, etc).

Things like Mama Mia just piss me off as not only is it ABBA (who make my ears bleed) but its also that type of musical where everyone starts singing and dancing as if its perfectly normal thing to do.

I believe that is because of the RBMY1A1 gene, found in the Y chromosome. It is unofficially called the "Err!!This-is-so-gay gene". Some alleles exist for the origional of "The producers" being awesome.

...why doesn't Avenue Q count? It's a musical. It was on Broadway. It won the Tony for Best MUSICAL in 2004. Explain to me how it doesn't count as a musical?
It's not that it isn't a musical. It is.The reason it doesn't count it because it is more appealing to men than women. And it had "The Internet is For Porn".Which is one of the most famous songs ever.So that kinda kills its "man unfriendly" aspect that many musicals have.

Because the Jets and the Sharks were murdered by the real gangs for their routines and men fear the repercussions of enjoying that type of thing nyoro~!

I like musicals, but not all of them.

So I guess my answer is: I don't know, people like what they like and hate what they hate, and if a dude is too insecure to give musicals a try than that is his problem.

I just haven't found one that I like. Don't get me wrong, musicals like Grease are awesome, but I haven't seen enough musicals to be able to properly judge them.

Across the universe, Sweeney Todd, and Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog are some of my favorite creations in the history of mankind

The only musicals I like are as follows (in no particular order):

Grease - Olivia Newton John in black leather pants. What's not to love?

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny - I love rock, and this movie delivers.

Sweeney Todd - Songs actually helped move the plot along instead of just...being there. Idk how else to put it. Great ending too.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut - It's South Park, need I say more?

Repo! - Gory, dystopian future movie with an albeit slow ending.

I prefer musicals that are self parodying (Dr Horrible) or experimental (Dancer In The Dark with Bjork).
