imagin Halo without a story it would be like doom 1-2 but with aliens and awsome graphics
Some people might like that though. Some people actually do have no attatchment to story whatsoever and will happily play anything, if the gameplay is engaging enough

I always sort of felt that favoring gameplay at the exclusion of story is like watching movies for the tits and explosions. It's just kind of a shallow view of the medium.

"you PLAY GAMES for the GAMEPLAY."

No, YOU play games solely for the gameplay. I play them for the experience, the characters and the story as well.

What are Mass Effect/KotOR/Dragon Age without their stories?

Storylines make games interesting and give motivation to play through.
thats only ever happened to me once, on Dragon Quest VIII, otherwise what pushes me are the rewards and challenges that lie ahead
Hm, well, perhaps you've never really played a game with a genuinely engaging story or characters - if you play mostly JRPGs I can see how easy it would be to just tune it out. Games like Mass Effect or Half Life 2 come to mind.

Nominally, RPGs are for the broad experience, the gameplay, the fun. Stories aren't always creative, or original, things like that. Those are reserved for the action/adventure, usually, with a parallel focus (for some) on gameplay instead. For some examples, we know the story (Zelda, Mario, Batman, anything with any military ever, Lego), so it's all about how we play. For others, it's about what we're playing (Prototype, inFamous, Assassins creed). We know the JRPG storyline by now--a bunch of teens with various flavors of exposition going off to kill the current Evilest Badass with the Biggest Sword.

the unquantifiable bombardment of dialogue options is what turned me off dragon age... that and the "character creation" thing

Alright, this is very odd.

Were you born around the time of Pong and have only just seen the light of day again? You say "character creation" as if it's unheard of in an RPG - same with dialogue options.

I know they are common in most WRPGs, I havnt really played many of them... there are things I like about them but those 2 things are a turn-off for me... Borderlands is my favourite WRPG

Because otherwise it's fucking BORING. Story helps us give two shits about a character, and makes us want to keep playing.

Borderlands is a FPS with RPG-elements. Try something like Oblivion, the plot won't really get in your way and you can do w/e you like pretty much.

People want a motivation for killing things (unless they're Nazis, which need no justification). People want a reason to hate the things they're killing or a justification. In Halo you're not killing the Covenant because they're aliens, but because they're on a crusade to destroy the human race. You have a motivation, so there is no reason to hold back. If you're not given a reason there's no point. Why do I want to be killing something that has nothing to do with me? While I don't consider story the first priority, having a good story is a serious plus. When you have fun gameplay and a good story... Well, that's when a game is considered good.

Let's say that a book, movie, and video game all have the same plot. As long as the gameplay is passable, I would most definitely enjoy the video game's story the most.

There's a level of interactivity, where YOU personally have an involvement with the story, that just isn't present in a book or movie. Take Heavy Rain, for example. Heavy Rain lets the story be YOUR story, and not merely the one that the developer said you must play through.

I'm reminded as well of Persona 3. You're supposed to give the protagonist your own name, and he says nothing other than what you tell him to. The storyline is completely static, yet it still feels like you actually have a stake in what's going on, since you're controlling somebody with your name (essentially, you in a different body).

To be honest, the storyline is probably the most important consideration of mine when I buy a game. When done right, it provides a more compelling and interactive experience than a book ever could.

you rlogic is flawed. You don't have to play a game for its gameplay. Or is Myst not a game to you?

While I do like a game with a good story, let's face it, if the game is fun enough, you won't care.
