Why do people from the US constantly complain about game prices?

Just because we have it better than most doesn't mean it's not overpriced. For example, you still complain about an ache in your foot even though some people have serious injuries that are much more painful than your cramp.

So far I know, most games here in the Netherlands [ Europe for the geographical illiterates ] cost ?59,99 99% of the time.
See, this is what I hate about mainland Europe.
It's a decimal point, not a decimal comma!
I looked at this and thought you were saying games cost six grand!
But on a calmer note: 60 euros is equivalent to £49.37 which is $77.09

OT: Because that's what humans do, they complain because they have to do something to get something in return, we'd complain if we were in the same situation.

There used to be a time when US games cost $15-30.

Oh man, I remember when It started to change from that... around what 1999/2001? I'm going to jump in for a bit, I think $60 is way too much. When you have other priorities and life and you're looking at an expensive gaming habit... somethings gotta go. That's one reason I've cut back on gaming so my wallet looks better. It's an expensive habit, and recently a lot of generic games have been coming out.

You Americans NEED to shut the fuck up about your game prices!

here in Norway, the common price for a brand new game is about 600 Norwegian Kroner, and seeing as how the current rate for US dollars -> Norwegian Kroner are 1 dollar cost 6 kroner, i.e we pay 100 dollars for a brand new game!

And in 1999/2000 the currency for US dollars to Norwegian Kroner was about 1Dollar = 10kroner

So it was still pricey as all fuck back then.

EDIT: ok im sorry, I should have said that all of you need to STFU when it comes to the prices, not just americans. i calculated the people who payd 60 euros, those who pay 35-40£, its all less than what we pay in Norway, 60 euros are 480 kroner, and 40£ are 400-450 kroner, i.e that's 75-80 dollars per game, we pay 100 dollars, thats 60£ or 75 euros.

Expensive games in the US may be cheaper than games elsewhere, but damn it they're still expensive!

Games are pretty damn cheap in England and everyone still complains occasionally, it's not just the US.

An exports an export. It costs more money to ship games from the top half of the world to the bottom half. Since Australia's the lowest continent that really buys any video games, and since I doubt the entire continent buys every video game that releases, I'm sure it is extremely expensive shipping millions of copies of video games to a continent where not many will be sold anyway for a lower price.

At least, that's what I believe might happen. To be honest, $60 here is fine with me, although I can see why people complain. I just trade in a lot of games and take advantage of deals.

Not to mention the fact that most have to be remade with no violence just to even be legal in AUS. I'm sure that costs a ton of money to do.

Video game prices suck on every continent. Anyone can clearly see by reading through this thread that it isn't just Americans complaining about the prices.

Everyone has the right to complain about something they feel is unfair.

Because it's still money that we have to pay.

"Why can't I pay nothing! Better yet, why can't you pay me to buy your game?!"

People will complain about anything. Get over it.
Yeah this about sums it up. Can you not buy online or are the prices still way up there for australia?
Steam used to be a lot cheaper, but they have now increased their prices to match retail.
Well that isn't just Valve they can't actually cross retailers, yet. Most purchases are still from stores and the management decides what to promote and sell. Valve are going to put out solid disc games but the retailers don't have to stock them so Valve have to play ball.

Seriously, it pisses me off to no end whenever I see people from the US who complain about spending $60 for a new game. People in Australia and Europe would kill to get those kinds of prices. Lets compare shall we.

StarCraft II listed on EBGames.com for $59.99 USD, the same for Halo: Reach. On EBGames.com.au SCII is $98 AUD, and Halo: Reach is $118 AUD... That translates to $88 USD and $106 USD respectively.

The RRP For SCII in the UK is 44.99 GBP which is equal to $70 USD. Halo: Reach has a RRP of 49.99 GBP, roughly $77 USD.

Seriously, you guys have the cheapest games in Western society. Stop complaining about it and be thankful you don't live in Australia or Europe.

EDIT: OK it's clarification time because people aren't reading past the first few posts anymore. Many have assumed that I am generalising, saying that I'm annoyed at ALL Americans because I believe you ALL complain. No. The topic title is asking why is it that people who live in the US complain about game prices. It does not say, why do all Americans complain about game prices. The fact is that the US has it better than most. That's the point of this thread.
Totally skipping every post in between so I can reply directly -

Americans seem to have a tough time differentiating needs and wants. Many people have enough money to satisfy their needs, almost nobody can have enough to satisfy all their wants.

If you are barely scraping by on bills you don't have enough to satisfy ANY wants. That means when you don't have enough money to buy a new game after paying all necessary bills that you should work to increase your earnings to satisfy more of your wants, or you should learn some mental discipline and want less. This culture is not adapted well to either one of these methods.

An average American will want something, assume it means they need something and then complain about how an unjust society driven by corporate greed has made it impossible for them to play Halo: Reach online multiplayer for eight hours a day.

Some people just don't like the idea of paying $60 for a plastic disc that odds are they're gonna get tried of in a week to a month's time.

We don't. At least not nearly as much as the Aussies and the brits on this site do. I am not saying you don't have a right to complain (hell I certainly would if I had to pay those prices), but in reading the forums all the price bitching is coming from those camps. I have rarely seen a complain about prices spoken in terms of Dollars. Post some examples from the forum to prove your point or STFU.

If I buy it from america, it's £200 plus post and packaging of roughly £75.
*sigh* so much cheaper over there.

You Americans have got it easy.

I don't hear many people complain about buying a game for $50 or $60, it's just when you buy a game that sucks. It could cost you $10,000 and we would still complain about having to pay $60 for a game that isn't worth a penny. Besides I never buy new, it's such a waste. There are ver few games that are really worth that much money. And I'm curious, but isn't the pound and all that worth a lot more then the dollar. That's just a guess, considering we could switch to bottle caps at this point and no one would care.
