Well, I didn't like it much, although it beats all japanese music I've ever heard bar The Mad Capsule Markets (who were awesome). The thing is, to my western ears, Japanese music really, really sucks.

It may not be "traditional jazz", but I'm not one to yell "this ain't like the old stuff", I like both styles.

Even if certain songs within both styles may suck, that doesn't mean the whole genre does, by the way.

There is such a thing?
Didn't listen to it, but if it's Jazz, it can't be too bad.
So I don't know why they hate it.
Although I do know why I hate Japanese rock: it just sounds weird with that strange language.

Well, even though i listen to a lot of Jrock and some Jpop, i dont like this song, World's end is my favorite song ever.

The dist guitar was new to me and I don't speak Japanese. These could be a minus but for me it's not, I really liked the song you embedded in your post so thanks!

The trumpets could also be negative. They're hard to get used to (probably one of the reasons SKA is so unpopular).

Maybe the biggest "problem" is that jazz with a female singer accompanied by a nerd related language isn't mainstream manly :/ :S I dunno

Well, it's alright. Enjoyable enough though i wouldn't listen to it in excess.

My main problem with it is it sounds kind of corny, mostly because of the obviously synthesized instrument sounds. While i really enjoy electronic music, i really dislike synth versions of actual existing instruments, particularly wind instruments.

When I clicked the thread didn't really expect to see this... I enjoy Japanese pop, rock and more recently started listening to a Japanese jazz artist, but this doesn't really seem like jazz.

This is the artist I discovered recently.

(Can someone tell me how to make the video appear in the post? Thanks so much.)

I didn't know it existed until just now. If this is a definitive example, though, I don't like it very much. But then again, I can't really think of an example of Japanese popular music that I like.

But as for the substance of the music, it's not really what I would consider jazz. It's really more big band or swing, and I spent most of the three years swing was really popular in the US wishing I'd been born without eardrums. I like my jazz a bit more expositional and disonant.

Maybe I'm a depressed jerk, but this is just too melodic and absurdly happy to be interesting. Where's the harmony? Where's the complexity? This, like most Japanese pop music, sounds like a jingle for an add from the 90's to me.

Hmm... i'll admit that i expected it to be a lot worse than that, although i don't hear any resemblance whatsoever to jazz (I don't even like jazz). Don't get me wrong it seems quite catchy but not jazz-ish at all. I definitely don't think it deserves hate, i respect it as i do all music (note: i do not classify Rap, pop and ''J-pop'' as music) however it's not really my style.

Edit - I've just seen what the guy above me posted and that's pretty much what i think of it. (didn't want to offend anyone)

well, I personally dont like it, but Im a die hard fan of older jazz and swing (Louis Armstong and Edmund Hull era) So i think its just my skepticism of all recent stuff. It doesnt have anything to do with it being Japanese.

Ok so as I listen more, at least its got good "swing" to it....... ok this isnt bad, dunno if its pure "Jazz" so much as it could be swing or big band style. but I still hold my aforementioned distrust of all new Jazz until it proves it isnt crap.... "Guantanamo bay" approach as Yahtzee called it.

I think it's the same reason as why people hate Jrock or JRPGs, it's because it's almost a parody of what music is like in the west, similar, but unnervingly different, and that's why people have a problem with it

I didn't know the Japanese even made Jazz. As for an answer, I don't think many people listen to regular Jazz, so adding a foreign language to the mix might make things worse.

that was good music, if you don't bother trying to understand the words and just listen to the song as though the vocals are just another instrument it's pretty awesome. the main problem is searching for it, how do you type that in?

I'm just now hearing about J-Jazz. I may have heard it before, but I didn't know such a genre existed.

(may as well start listening to some of the stuff here)
