I like the recycling and perfecting of old formulae. The games are different enough to be interesting individually and similar enough that I know what I'm getting, and I like it that way. I guess there's nothing to do at this point but agree to disagree.

I think that's why I'm a 'retro gamer'. I prefer the original over the remakes! :^)

They're different enough that you can't really call them remakes. Well, except the remakes, like Metroid Zero Mission or Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen, but even they do bring something new to the table (better mechanics being most prominent).
I'm a fan of gaming in general. I look at games and judge them all on individual merit, not on how they compare with any other game. I don't look at Twilight Princess and compare it to Ocarina of Time. Instead I admire the soundtrack, the visuals (which are quite good), Midna's depth, the awesomeness of going from wall to wall with double clawshots, all that stuff. It's more fun that way :)

Nintendo does enjoy going after your wallet, and they're not shy about it.

Remember Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles?

It's a GameCube game, but if you want to get the most out of it, such as effective inventory management and special minigames, you need to have a Nintendo GBA and a link cable.

Oh, and it's a co-op game, so you're barely getting anything out of it unless you play with your friends. Each one of your friends needs a Nintendo GBA and link cable as well.

Oh, and if you want to get the most most out of it, you'll need to buy the Nintendo e-Card Reader [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_e-Reader] and collectible trading cards to swipe.

By the time you have the necessary hardware for a four player game (assuming you already had a Gamecube and standard controllers) you've paid over $500 ($100 per GBA, $20 per link cable, ?$ for e-Reader, ?$ for cards, ect).

Though Crystal Chronicles took it to new levels, this was not an usual trend, and similar features could be found in Zelda: Wind Waker, Pokemon Colosseum, Animal Crossing, ect.

They toned it down a little in that the Wireless DS requires no link cable (and not that many Wii games make use of the Wireless DS, if any) but haven't knocked it off. What do you think all those weird accessories [http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/01/18in1.jpg] for the Wiimote are for? At the very least, you've probably got numchucks, and a lot of the downloadable games require you purchase vintage controllers (if you don't have one).

Honestly, I try to avoid the Wii'mote at all costs. It's just so frustrating to use, especially on delicate games like Okami. :^/ I use my wavebird for everything I can and my Classic Controller for everything else. All I know is Miyamoto is probably laughing on his private island at the 'fanboys' who buy all his company's crap. Crystal Chronicle's included... :^D

Yeah I don't understand the Wii hate either. This whole 'hardcore' gamer nonsense is just that, nonsense. What because you want games where you can trash talk to other idiots online and shoot peoples digital heads off that makes you 'hardcore'? Gimme a break.

The Wii is doing a good thing as far as I can see, they are spreading games to more and more people and more and more people are enjoying games as a result. I think these 'hardcore' gamers are just threatened that their 'hardcore' and totally niche past time is somehow going to be spoiled if more people do the same.
To all those that continuously mock the term hardcore, and insist to wrap the word with patronizing air quotes:
There needs to be a fine line between hardcore and casual. I know it may seem stupid and nerdy to differentiate the two when all you're doing is randomly pressing buttons (or waving sticks in this case), but there needs to be a definitive distinction between the two; whether you wanna call it "pro" or "n00b," veterans or new-comers, experienced or inexperienced, there needs to be a distinction between games like Resistance 2, and games aimed at soccer moms and their kids (and possibly grandparents). To classify them in the same category is simply an insult to gaming in general; imagine Harry Potter books being considered on par with Shakespeare (bit of an extreme example, but you get the point).

If anything, "retro" and "old-school" gamers have much more of an obnoxious arrogance than self-proclaimed hardcore gamers.

As for the Wii, my main problem is this: The Wii alone cannot provide a next-gen experience. You need a PS3 or 360 to experience true next-gen, but what about the Wii makes it a necessary purchase, aside from entertaining casual people that you invite over once in a while? IMO, the people who fervently discredit the significance of graphics and presentation of PS3/360 games are just as blind and prejudiced as those who bash the Wii for being a kiddy toy.

Don't hate the Wii so much as I'm entirely too lazy to swing the controller around after I work a 12 hour shift. I will give it this though, Nintendo has made another party system (tons of games that can be fun played in short spurts while drunk with a bunch of people watching.)

My guess is because it isn't safe. Most people give a damn what their pears think of them, and so they want a safe bet on what to own
I don't worry too much about what my pears think of me, but that's ussually because I try to eat them before they over-ripen.

As for why people hate the Wii. People don't hate the Wii, there is inevitably going to be one or two threads of people who don't understand that not everything is going to be to their taste complaining about this game or that or the control sequence or something, but that's a trickle of water into the ocean.

you said it yourself, the Wii is successful, which runs in direct contrast to everyone hating it. I might have asked why everyone hated the DreamCast when it hit the market, there was an awesoe system that didn't last, and it was sega's last.

Totaly agree, love the dream cast. and love the Saturn. But let us not forget that hardcore gaming crowd, while having a few good games, blood gore and character saying shit does not a good game make, GTA for instance. HOWEVER you can have those same ingredients and have relay good game. IE No more Heroes.

The Wii is different and that makes it stand out, The 360 is safe and has a halo game.

Now what Do I mean by safe? theirs nothing new, its the same controls as the x-box, and already has a large market share, to developer and gamer it is safe. The wii, is a bit daring in its design. and I think that frightens people. So they call it unoriginal names like "Kidy" well No More Heroes is anything but "kidy". Hate it all you want but I only hate the PS3 and that's because my ps2 died three times as well as my Sony car CD player and stereo so they've lost me as a customer for good reason.

I have a wii and enjoy using it. Most FPS gamers wouldn't think it but it is nice to have a change of pace and play a bright, colourful game with the wii's motion sensitive controls. It makes a change from gunmetal grey and blood red and the random button mashing that comes with gears of war for example.

There are a few must haves for the wii. SSBB, metroid prime 3, TP. And a few more, some I'm scared to list.

I think the reason that some people don't like the wii is because it dosn't do as much as the xbox 360 or the PS3. You can't do online co-op, there is no real friend section on it and I don't understand it not having the ability to play DVD's.

Also I didn't think that many people actually hate the wii. I know a few are dissapointed with it, some consider it to be a waste of money. But I find most people that have one are pleased with their purchase. But maybe im just playing on the word 'hate' here.

I like where you're going with this, but I don't think it's that easy.

"Casual" is an illusion created by marketing who figures there is this wonderful demographic of gamers who barely play games and therefore the game must be made as accessible as possible and as shallow as sun tan lotion on the back of a major celebrity or else they'll be scared and chased into the woods. They look like this [http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j206/diapermike/WiiSports.jpg] and are interesting mostly because those people are actors and actual casual gamers don't exist.

What actually happens is that nobody with a two-digit IQ would play such a game for more than 5 minutes because it's boring crap that insults the most basic of human intelligence. Consequently, they end up buying another later on, are insulted again, and never buy another game in their lives. Marketing goes "whoopee, we have captured the casual barely-ever-buys-a-game market" and the cycle continues.

"Hardcore" refers to many completely separate niches. We have me, the guy who's been playing games forever. We have the not necessarily old school gamers who are just flipping crazy and do stuff like grind for 128 hours straight and through 5 comas to get their World of Evergrind character to level 192 first on the server. Marketing generally considers "hardcore" gamers as people who purchase more than 6 games per month, more than the other 90% of gamers according to their surveys. And so on - "hardcore" is really pretty meaningless.

In summary, labels to describe people suck, it's profiling, and people who profile - such as marketers who must do so to eat - are desperately attempting to contain the uncontainable, and this "retro" and "old-school" obnoxious arrogance holds a grain of truth for you unless you're even moreso than I. Thank you, don't forget to tip your server.

i like the wii when i have lots of people over, especialy non gamers. but when you try and play it by yourself or a 1-2 people it just doesnt have many good games. i admit i havnt hunted down the best wii games, but i bought about 5 games for the wii when i got it. rayman was the only good one i had. brawl was lacking, mario party had a total of 5 games repeated endlessly with different background, rayman was fun, link was ok but im not much into adventure.

i admit it, i am a FPS fan. and the wii cant do it. so unless i have alot of people over it just sits on a shelf.

Consider this, The Media(and of course Jack Thompson) love to pick on Video games because it is shooting fish in a barrell. If more people take interest in gaming the Vultures will move on to an easier target.

I don't like the Wii, but lets start from the beginning:

I'm actually a PC gamer. I've never owned a console till about two weeks ago. When the Wii came out, pretty much all of my friends got it, so for a while I got acquainted with it along with the rest of my friends, and we all kept playing games like Mario Strikers, Mario Galaxy, and SSBB for a while. The Wii is nice, slick and unique, but that's just about it. Two weeks ago, a friend of mine and myself decided to co-purchase an Xbox. We split the price and split the ownership. We also borrow lots of games from friends and split the price of the games. For poor college students like myself and the other party, this is a good setup.

We make our accounts and are amazed: integrated custom playlists; gorgeous graphics; large game selections; _better fucking controllers_; actual online capabiliy. Yeah, we got what we payed for.

The Wii doesn't do shit. It's fun, but it's the opposite of a bang for the buck. If I have nostalgia or a deep need to play SSBB the Wii is worthwhile. Other than that, I hear that No More Heroes isn't bad.

Because Third Party Games are Crappy. at least for the Wii they are.
Okay, there have been SOME good 3rd party games but they don't interest me.
there have been SO MANY games that just didn't make good use of the Wii remote, and because of the wider audience, they can make games that will be bought anyway. A crappy pony riding game for the Wii will be bought by little girls (or their parents), because all they care about are the ponies.

I think it's simply fanboyism..

If you can't let someone else have their fun on their system, you're a fanboy.
I've only tried the Wii once, it was alright. Not my personal favorite, but it's all good fun in the right setting.
Hating a console is just plain retarded.
