Why do so many people hate Naruto?

Speaking form a non-anime-watching perspective here:

This is just an observation. But it seems to me it's a bit of a cheaply made badly dubbed stock anime, a bit of a filler so to say. And that there is a lot of anime of higher quality available. (I still won't watch any of it, but whatever.) And then there's the fanbase. I don't even know many of them, but even I have noticed they are an annoying lot.

I like the creative abilities of the show, as well as some of the characters. The creative design is fairly well done and the scenery always looks nice.

It suffers from a bit of "flashback saturation" but. I don't mind a great deal of flash backs to characterise someone and their attitude, but doing the same flashback three times in the span of a few episodes is too much.

Also, Naruto himself is the most ironic "ninja" ever.
He is a fluro-orange jumpsuit wearing kid with blonde hair who screams "I AM A NINJA" with absolutely little grace. (at least at the start) I still find it funny as hell.

I started watching naruto as a lil kid so i kinda grew up following it. So there is kind of a nostalgic love going on here. But the anime went seriously low...too much fillers and the quality was bad.....couple of fillers can seriously put off ppl from the series.
Also long ago my young mind figured out that MANGA totally PWNS Anime...even very good animes cant beat their original forms....
And also i think the creator exhausted himself with ideas...the manga/anime became so popular he was probably forced to draw more and more...also they payed him alot :D
Since the start of the manga/anime ive seen naruto fight the same bloody way....the growth curve was stopped long ago.
Boring repetitive fights....the story is...weird.... Akatsuki were a super awesome bunch of bad guys...but the whole deal with Madara and then the Kage summit...it just confused me...its like the creators have these great ideas but dont know what to do with them.
And the revival of Hinata was one of the stupidest things EVER! If she was let to die it would`ve made a much better impact on the story.

I still read the manga everyweek tho....ive been following it too long so im just plain curious to see how it will all end. But its been years since i considered this in my top.

I couldn't be bothered watching the anime, so I just read the manga instead. But sometimes, he makes Naruto's character do something so painfully stupid/idiotic that it makes me cringe. But I still read it.

It amazes me how some peoples reasons for not reading the manga is 'I hate the english dub in the anime' -.- Thats like saying I dont like reading the manga because I dont like Happy Tree Friends - they aren't the same thing!! I stay well away from the english dub wherever possible but that doesnt stop me from reading the manga! Also - there are no fillers in the manga, so that reason is flawed too. I think the OP is asking for reasons to do with the actual content instead of 'bad translations!' and 'fillers! nuff said!'

For me, the first season was really good. It was emotionally deep, had good characterization, epic fights, and a compelling villain. After that, everything fell apart because...

1. Bad Writing The new main villain becomes uncompelling and doesn't even have an encounter with the main characters, aside from a cliche thing where Sasuke gets 'infected' with darkness.
While I can agree that most of the points you're making are making perfect sense, and I can clearly accept them as a reason not to watch this. I'm not quite getting your references to the villains.

Who was the compelling villain, and who is the new villain? If you can remember the names, please let me know, because there have been more than two main bad guys where I'm at and I don't know how far you're in or who you're refering to.

I'll have to admit to being one of those people who hate it without watching a single episode. There are a few reasons for this: First, while I could watch some of it just to confirm my preconceptions, because it's so long by this point, I could watch a hundred episodes and still be told that I hadn't given it a chance. I also take issue with the show's length in and of itself, as I feel that the overall quality of a series tends to decrease as it takes longer to get to the actual point. Most of my favorite anime are movies and 6- or 12-episode series, though there are exceptions; Monster, at 74 episodes, is one of the best shows I've ever seen, which brings me to my next point: I don't belong to the target demographic. Normally, this fact would lead me to dismiss Naruto as another anime "not for me," but what moves it from a mere lack of interest to actual hatred is, as many have pointed out before me, the fanbase. The headbands, the inane fanart and the sheer stupidity of it all just tends to get on my nerves. I'm sure there are reasonable Naruto fans out there, who watch a wide variety of anime and just happen to like this sort of thing. I have nothing against those people, but personally, I wouldn't touch Naruto with a stick.

People hate it because it's popular and because it's been bastardized by the dub (Probably more the latter than the former.)

It actually used to be good before the filler season, but during and after that it just got steadily worse and incredibly boring. I just stopped watching after he started training with frogs. Again. I lost all interest by then.
Im sorry but your just WRONG. I will admit the pre time skip filler arc? Marathon? 2 year torture session yes thats it. Anyway since the start of shippuden it has been awesome and now we are approaching the Pein vs Naruto in sage mode fight. It literally does not get better than that.
Don't get me wrong, I followed with Shippuden for a decently long time, but I simply lost my interest with it. I still say it was at its' best right before the Filler Arc; I especially loved Kimimaru. Naruto doesn't deserve all the utter hatred it gets, but it's not all that great as the fanboys say it is.

Because it's standardized as the BESHT FAWKING AENIMEH EVURZ, when we all know it's Cowboy Bebop.

Well, at least for me.
As you can see through reading this thread, no one thinks Naruto is the "BESHT FAWKING AENIMEH EVURZ".

I'll admit it's relatively popular, but that's to be expected with this kind of show. It has a demographic, you know. Young boys 6 to 16, especially in Japan, love it to bits. It's a very, very big demographic.
Yes, but this is the Escapist. Free of most internet scourges, which is why I adore it so.

Most.

It got boring. I watched all of the original, and then part of Shippuden. Then they killed Gaara. I don't know where the story went from there, I don't know if he came back, I honestly don't care. There was no purpose to his death, there was NO reason to kill that awesome, awesome man who deserved way better treatment than he got. Gaara was the only reason I watched Naruto, and having him lose to that idiot with the clay was an insult to his abilities.

Because it is every anime stereotype personified. Annoying, over the top characters, lots of filler, bad animation, multiple references to Japanese culture, horrible dub, rabid overweight and incredible vocal/hated fanbase and the fact that there are literally hundreds of better animes out there.
Hokuto no ken, Dragon Ball Z and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan! are 3 great fighting animes that are better than Naruto.

Another reason: Naruto is an unlikeable little pecker. He's like the annoying little cousin that your mom made you hang out with when you had other plans. He's loud, annoying, a shallow character and he's the worst ninja ever. Don't even get me started on that mopey blob of teenaged angst "sasuke" or that pink-haired walking vaginal infection Sakura.

Well, I just watched SOME of the an episode on hulu. I couldn't finish it. I'll give you a rundown of some of the problems.

-explaining every stupid little thing
-techniques pulled out of their ass
-explaining the techniques they just pulled out of their ass
-pacing
-drama, drama, drama
-what the hell is Pain, there's like 7 of him or something. I refuse to look it up.
-machismo
-clones, clones, clones, clones, CLONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, these guys are more like X-men now than ninjas except much less interesting and full of angst and sometimes really whiney. And wolverine doesn't do stupid crap like project his adamantium or something, you know, just make up a new power on the fly for a particular situation. Not yet anyway.

Erm, because he's not a ninja, plain and simple?
I don't know, I haven't even gotten past the third volume of the manga, so I can't say.
If anything, I guess it IS the popularity I hate so much, but only because I don't think the show itself is all that great in the first place.

Constant fillers, horrible dubs, most of the characters are completely unlikeable and the constant drama and teenage angst is really annoying.

The only things I actually liked about it were the fight scenes, but I just can't stand watching it anymore.

In the end, for me, it comes down to one thing:

Pirates [http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/0/02/] vs Ninjas [http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/0/01/]

Strengths

Pirates

Sense of adventure
Interesting characters
Various story arcs
Eichiiro Oda

Ninjas

Character interaction
Power progression is believable

Weaknesses
Pirates

Long
Pirates may stink after a while
Some arcs are better than others

Ninjas

Too much filler in the arcs
Too few characters get a big focus
Magic progression later on is out of this world
Aimless plot
--------------------------------------------------------

Look, when I read One Piece, I get a lot of varied content. I've seen a rebellion, I've watched as a popular character die and the repercussions of it. Even though some of the arcs were good and some bad, Skypiea for example was bad, overall it's progressed quite well with the current comics showing quite a lot of backbone in building up a major change in the world.

With Naruto, I didn't get that. Maybe it was the Chuunin test or whatever but it felt like another high school manga. There was no real sense of progression with the storyline save that Naruto still wants respect. If I read it now, I'd be lost since I've yet to get past the feeling of "meh" from the beginning of the series. It seems to have taken a while to find itself. Sadly, I just couldn't get into neither the anime nor the manga like I did with One Piece.

I just see it as DBZ for the next generation.

P.S. When did anime begin being looked at as a genre and not a medium?
when weeabos wanted japaneese cartoons not to be associated with american cartoons

O.T. I think lost interest with the series
