I've never actually seen or read any of Naruto, but I can (and will, obviously) say that what puts me off is the massive amounts of hype it generates. It's really strange and hard to describe, but it's received so much attention that I just end up thinking, screw this, I've got better things to do. Similarly, I feel the same about Neon Genesis Evengelion and the Final Fantasy series.

People probably dislike it because the characters are annoying, the story is retarded, and no one on the show acts like ninjas, though they all claim to be ninjas.

All those reasons are why I think I enjoy the show. All the characters are varied and interesting enough to hold my attention. The story is pretty interesting (if not a little gay) when you compare it the usual save the world crap. And the word ninja is just that, a word; meaning that it can be interpreted and defined as people see fit. So as far as I can tell, when everyone calls themselves "ninjas" on the show, that's what they are because that's what they claim to be.

Everyone has a valid, though kinda similar, reason for why they dislike the show. God knows I dislike it for similar reasons as well, but that don't stop me from watching and enjoying it. Everyone drive safe ;)

Pretty much this. People who dislike anime hate it because it exemplifies what's wrong with mainstream anime. Anime fans hate it for the exact same reason and the resulting blockage of good series (fun fact: most anime series have a pre-defined length, often topping out at 26 episodes).

Personally though, I didn't hate what I've read of it (Shippouden looks awful, though), but even within long-running shonen series there's better (like FMA and Mahou Sensei Negima).
The most recently released episodes (aka, the subs because nobody in the right mind would watch the dub) make Shippuden look golden. Not including the stupid filler at the most inappropriate time. Perhaps that's because the plot has improved and one hell of a fight is coming up. The plot has actual depth now where I can no longer call HUGE plot points from a mile away (seriously, we've all known Naruto's father for like, since the series began).

Course, whoever has gotten this far is in it for the end. However, Shippuden sucks, a lot, at first. Kishi is a fucking idiot for making Naruto ridiculously weak for the first two arcs and I'm not totally sure the Fuuton: Rasen-Shuriken makes up for that in the third arc. Yes, excuse the nerd-gasm in there.

The filler is still fucking annoying though as said. They seriously shoved a filler...
after both Itachi and Jiraiya have died and Naruto is not aware of the later's death... QUICK! Avoid actual emotion with a filler arc!

People hate it because it's popular and because it's been bastardized by the dub (Probably more the latter than the former.)

It actually used to be good before the filler season, but during and after that it just got steadily worse and incredibly boring. I just stopped watching after he started training with frogs. Again. I lost all interest by then.
I love your avatar!

OT: Probably because it's cool to hate it.

Because most everything Shonen Jump does contains 50 actual episodes, and 450 filler episodes. I stopped after about 200 or so episodes and they still hadn't done jack shit.

This, and the fact that the voice over is extremely annoying.

Simply put, pacing. Naruto has some great fight scenes and some interesting plot lines and characterization, and maybe the writer could be given credit for trying to create huge, epic story, but nothing in the series is good enough to keep me interested over 100 non-filler episodes. Pacing is necessary, and at times, closure.

Here is a question, has any series EVER been still good aftet 100 episodes, or maybe 15 volumes of a manga?

i dont think its just about the filler though. i feel that inuyasha had just as high a percentage of filler and i dont think it gets as much hate as naruto does. my negative feelings about the series are for the same reasons i have negative feelings for pokemon or dbz or shows like that. they have been made very mainstream by cartoon network and such. that in itself wouldnt be bad, i mean we all know anime is in serious trouble and if people would actually buy anime rather that downloading it or getting it used, this industry might have a longer life. the problem with shows like naruto is that it makes it harder for other series to experiment with new things. you have shows like naruto and dbz and bleach and they all follow the same basic formula and it gets them a strong following and anime that tries something new or has an interesting story to tell, is quickly overshadowed and the industry is unable to grow.

although, going back to the filler issue, its also true that people arent going to keep buying anime if they have to weed through 100+ episodes of filler

EASY, FMA, NGE, and few more are actually worth watching, they display anime/manga as an art form.

Naruto is just an obstacle preventing anime/manga from becoming true art.

A REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING OBSTACLE.

I may be committing treason, but I actually liked some of the filler episodes. There were other characters in them besides Naruto. I like Naruto, and am really excited that the anime has just started the Pain story, but I'm getting really fed up with the Manga. Sasuke needs to die--not be saved, not brought back to the village, not die saving his friends--just die. That way, we can move on. And please, for the love of all of Narutoness, STOP FOCUSING ON NARUTO'S TRAINING! And we just got the THIRD retelling of a Host's life, which is exactly the same. The filler was better than this.

As a little side note, I have a headband tied to my backpack. Surprisingly, no one has ever said anything against me, but several people have said they thought it was neat.

The characters are annoying; why are we supposed to root for this upbeat twat, or have sympathy for the emo, or ignore the obvious uselessness of the stock love interest-ish?

The fillers...ok, blanket statement: if you don't want to overrun the manga, take a few months off. But don't make ~100 episodes of fillers, which only annoy people. And absolutely do not make pointless cooking fillers (cake in Bleach, some ramen malarkey in Naruto)

The story; it might be due to the fillers, but I'm pretty sure that the actual story was no longer than 50 episodes. Twat becomes ninja, twat's buddy falls to the dark side to kill his brother, twat's buddy kills his mentor and his brother, twat still looking for him. Is that about right?

But more importantly, it's in the nature of anime, or something I call Dragonball Z syndrome. Basically, you have a fairly average protagonist who must overcome some much stronger opponent. He (for the protagonist is ~99% sure to be male) eventually does after getting his arse handed to him a few times and subsequently training. But where from here? Well, how about a new, more powerful villain? Sure, so the protagonist is already stronger from the previous bout, so the new villain must be more powerful still. Keep this up for a while and you'll get characters that could probably annihilate the universe by farting, which is incredibly boring, and ludicrously contrived. Remember how quickly over 9000 became over one million?

Oh, and the whole "Believe it!" Is that also in the original japanese? If so, does it actually translate to believe it?

I can't say I hate it, but I'm not interested at all in it. I don't want to know anything about it at all. Still, y'get two Naruto fans together and you'll spend hours listening to them go on and on and on and on and on and ON about Sasuke or Rock Lee or a damn tournament that Naruto was in.

I don't know what you're talking about and I find it rude to have to listen to others drone on about it.

So I guess technically my issue with Naruto is his/its fans.

I personally don't hate Naruto as a concept, but I hate the anime and the fanboys. The fanboys are some of the worst in the anime world and are mainly composed of younger people and generally annoying large people. Not that I'm saying everyone who likes the show is, but from what I've seen that's the major fanboy area.

I hate the anime because it just didn't seem right to me. The early voices, the various fillers, and generally everything about it seemed awkward and poorly done. Though to be fair, I stopped watching the anime early on and stopped reading the manga as I couldn't afford them anymore and I feel it's the same as illegally downloading a game or movie to read them online (Something I'm very adamantly against). It's the same basic idea in principal.

Those are just my two cents though.

not an anime fan, or really a manga fan, but I do read naruto (never watched it). I like it, I suppose. It reminds me a bit of harry potter, but instead of wizards and what not, it's people who pretend to be ninjas. The characters are pretty well done, the plot is good, the fights are entertaining, and it does a pretty good coming of age story with naruto. Yes, he's annoying in the first part, but he's also 12. 12-year olds are annoying by nature. Even then, the writer does a good job of showing us how naruto is maturing, and in the second part (the "S" word that's long and that I'm too tired and drunk too look up) he becomes a downright great character.

To answer why I think people hate naruto, I'd say it's because they never actually read it, and because it's popular.

On a more serious note, why the hell is Bleach popular? again, not a big manga reader, but even when compared to the few other ones I've read, it's absolute garbage.

1. There are much, much better anime that are not mainstream

2. Naruto steal the ratings of such excellent anime by catering to a generally immature audience that thinks character development involves a never changing main premise (it doesnt)

3.Like anything that lasts too long Naruto has overstayed its welcome. In an effort to milk the franchise it has survived for longer than it should (all good things end, bad things are eternal, take a lesson from portal).

Actually there is a lot of reasons why people could hate it:
1. Loads of filler and filler in-between episodes.
2. "Believe It!"
3. Cliche characters, stupid as well
4. Too much explanations
5. Mega amounts of flash backs
6. Every bad ass has a sad life X 10
7. Annoying fans.
8. Nothing like real life Ninjas.

Even though it's all true I still like Naruto, it has it's moments (especially some good fight scenes).
