I really don't have an issue with Americans. I wasn't pleased with GWB's decisions as President, but then I didn't have to live under that. I didn't appreciate the conglomerates over there remaking "Life On Mars" without John Simm - because, frankly, he made that show awesome - but then if I don't like it, I don't have to watch it.

Then there was Fox and Firefly... I still get a little teary.

But then I think - this is the country that gave me Star Trek and gave geeks of the world Star Wars. There are many things I have to thank the US for. Johnny Depp, for example. Thank you, USA, for giving me Johnny Depp. It was very thoughtful of you.

So, really, I don't hate the US. I think the grand scheme of things that people just don't like the blaise attitude that some extremely patriotic Americans have that they live in the greatest place on Earth. You know what? I think my country is pretty awesome. It's sunny and warm most of the year and I'm not afraid to leave my house in the city at night. That's something to be appreciative of, too.
Not many in the US are afraid to leave the house at night either. It always seems to me that when we're talking about different countries, nobody is happy until someone else admits their country is inferior.

I love the United States, I can't think of another place in the world I would rather live. It is clear you love your unstated country, and I can imagine you can't think of another place you'd rather live. Since when is it a crime to think you live in the greatest place on earth? Does someone else also feeling like they also live in the greatest place on earth sully your own fulfillment?

We are both lucky to feel the way we do about where we live. o/\o

Why do people continually feel the need to tell someone else how shitty their home is? (Not that I think your doing this, just in general. You seem to lean more towards the live and let live side.)
I don't think the US is shitty at all - on the contrary, when I visited it, I loved it so much I didn't want to go home. I was pretty young at the time.

It's not a crime to love where you live, I'm sorry if that's the way it came out. Like you said, people have a constant need to tell other people how shitty the place [the other people live] is. Americans are just as guilty as the rest of the world and I think the reason some people find it annoying is that the media quite frequently gives us this message. It's not the common American's fault, it's just the message the media sends.

The image I frequently get of America is that it is a face-paced country that doesn't really care about the small man and that the night time is ripe picking for anyone to take anything they like. I know I'm stupid for believing this propagated image, but when you see it all the time, a little bit becomes ingrained on your subconscious. You get home early at night. You make sure you don't walk alone. You choose another route. The little things, you know?

Good on you for loving where you live, though! Yeah, I am more of a "live and let live" kind of person. :)

Most people I've run into on the internet that shallowly hate Americans for no other reason than that they are from America is for this simple reason:

It's popular to hate the USA.

I'd counter your argument, but it seems everyone else has already beaten me to the punch exlaining how you're a moron.

OT: Because we're big and the minority of assholes get way more screen time on the news than they should.
wait, what was that? How the hell do WE get more screen time!? You are involved into everything, wars, spills, world economical depression, mentioned in everything. OH, an american paedophile was caught on a motorway in poland, oh barack obama has turned down the anti rockets system, oh barack obama has countered the spill, oh american people this and that. Your country has more screening than any other. I aint gonna add to the flamewar, but DONT YOU FOOKING TELL ME BULLCRAP LIKE THAT!
I think you misunderstood me. I meant that while the minority of Americans are loud mouth assholes that no one likes, including me. They're the ones most seen and heard in the news.

These are some really silly reasons to hate a country.

I can understand if some Iraqi widow hates us because a US soldier killed her husband or if that girl in that picture from Vietnam is here talking about the full body burns she got from napalm and how her kid got cancer from Agent Orange, but these are just petty, stereotypical, and often times flat out wrong.

I'm just gonna respond for him before this gets outta hand...He meant Americans, but not the majority of Americans. Settle down.

EDIT: Whoops, beaten to that one...I presume too much, thinking I'm the only one stalking the Escapist tonight...

Because everyone is jealous of our massive douchebaggery! XD

But in all seriousness, the US has the world's largest economy and if not the most powerful, then pretty damn close to, armed forces. We also have the ability to project socio-economic and military force almost anywhere in the world. Finally we think that our culture and form of government is the best in the world.

And since EVERYONE think that their own culture is the best....

Well you can see why we're the biggest dickheads on the block. America has the means to attempt to force its culture upon others. So we do. And sometimes, we're even successful. But most of the time, people just get pissed even as they are secretly jealous.

It does not bother me that people hate the United States. It does bother me when they generalize and stereotype everyone in the United States. I don't understand the point generalizing and stereotyping people.

The tyranny of the majority. 51% of americans are not well educated. But by your system they control the rest. In a country where the stupid control the smart peole will be cynical (im looking at you george bush)
Only one thing I would like to argue.

See, stupid people have rights too. John Q. Public gets just as much say as Robert Oppenheimer. And "uneducated" is not the same as "stupid." Just because one is not an intellectual does not mean one cannot be smart.

Although I admit, George Bush was an idiot. Cheney actually ran the country. XD

Because there are people here who say that we should've gotten involved and stopped the Holocaust (despite the fact that we didn't know about it until it was too late) and then turn right back around and say that we shouldn't have gotten involved in the Middle East. And don't say we were there just for oil! America has owned 10% of the Middle East's oil, and that number hasn't moved.

That's not true actually, and it shows how short our nation's memory must be. Bush won against Gore in 2000 but he never won the popular vote.

Pretty much this. The United States isn't perfect, but no better or worse than a lot of other countries. I think it just comes from being one of the global superpowers, it makes us an easy target. At least that's my guess.

The Democracy problem.
The only people who are qualified to rule know better than to rule, and those who want to rule aren't qualified to do so.
That means we vote on the most popular person with the most ethnic (OR NOT) background with the best speaking voice and smile.
Stupid media.
Stupid govt, giving the choice to people who hardly know anything at all about what they are voting for.

It's pretty much the bully of the world. Some of it may be jealousy, but it's also at the core of a lot of things that went wrong in recent history. It's not fair to say that Americans are generally lazy; on average Americans have something like the sixth longest working year in the world, clocking an average of about 1777 working hours per year, just behind Greece at 1811. American food is just very fatty, and in large portions.

I hear that Americans are also seen as very snobby when they travel at large.
