Because I buy everything used. Video games, clothes, condoms basically everything.

OT: Because Heavy Rain for, I think, $10 is much better than for $20. It all comes down to money for me.

Cheaper. It's that simple.

I can buy a brand new high-profile PS3 game for $110. (Australia. Shut up.)

Or I can wait a few months and buy it for $70. (Seriously, stop laughing.)

Or I can wait a few months, trade in some old games and get it for $30.

I make no apologies for saving money. Fuck the developers and publishers. If they want my day-one new game money they can either lower prices or make games that are really worth those ridiculous prices.
Wow, is the australien dollar worth the same as, say, the usd?
Yup.

They're almost equal in value. Currently, 1 Australian dollar is worth just over 98 Us cents.
How do they get away with that, if they did that in the UK there would be uproar. I cant imagine any extra cost adds such a ludicrous price rise so why do they do that to you?

Generally, I only buy used games when I can't get them otherwise or when, for some reason, I want to own a game but I specifically don't want to support the developers for it. If I decided, for example, to atone for my sins by playing Resident Evil 5 again, I would buy it used.

I do like supporting the developers when I can, especially if it's someone whose games I've enjoyed in the past, like Atlus or Retro Studios. If this means I have to wait a little longer to save up or for the price of new to come down, that's fine, it's not like I don't have plenty already.

I just can't afford to buy new games all the time. I have to buy certain games used if I want to play them.

Because it's cheaper and i don't care much for multiplayer, plus i can't really afford spending 1/6 of my salary on a new game, prices here are simply ridiculous.

Well, that sucks.

Usually the only reason I buy used games is because finding new copies is either extremely hard or impossible and I'm not about to pay some jackass that found a copy of a 10 year old game still sealed in their garage the $300 they think it's worth because it's an old video game when they try to sell it on Amazon\eBay.

I generally do it to pick up older games. You cant ever find them because they're only sold new for like 2 months

Unfortunately the only used game shops where I live is one of those independently owned ones that have to nickel and dime you almost as bad as retail to even stay in business, and never have any good games anyway so I mostly buy new.

I'll buy when a given game hits my price point. It varies by game, but I usually have an idea of how much I want to pay and I wait.

You'd think that means all my games are used since they should hit the price point first, but quite surprisingly that's not the case. About 30% of my games were bought used. I never sell.

What I've found is that many times games are available online, brand new, for about the same price as used in stores. I'll pay up to $5 more for a new game.

Must qualify that its Australia I'm talking about.

It's because not so very long ago the Australian dollar was much weaker. About 50-60 US cents. Since basically all game are imports from the US, Europe or Japan, this meant prices were always high.

When the dollar went up in value, publishers and retailers just "forgot" to lower their prices to match. After all, folks here are used to paying those prices because it's what we've always payed.

So yeah, they pretty much do it because they can get away with it.

I actually kind of admire that on some level.

yeah I'm with the majority here one a good 70% of the so called triple a games arnt worth 60 dollars but also for what ever reason i miss a game or when I have to rid my self of my collection for reasons lost in time... any how used games are a great way to find older titles.

I don't... I prefer my games new. I've only bought a couple of games pre-owned, and only because I couldn't get a new copy and the used copies were in perfect condition. I try to keep all my cases, disks and manuals in as close to brand new condition as possible, and there's no guarantee that I can find a used copy that has had the same level of care shown to it. I'm pedantic like that.

Also, my instinct to save money is often overridden by my desire to play the games I want to play as soon as they come out. And I'm in Australia, so that's often a $100 desire.

Though I can just look at this thread and chuckle when it is plainly obvious why next gen systems will likely include anti used game components.
They likely won't, actually. Not sure if you're trying to bait people but it's incredibly unlikely because they don't want to contend with Gamestop.

Seriously, the used market is a noble ally to the gaming industry. One they're publicly berating, but that's politics.

I mean, Gamestop even gets special deals with publishers over online passes. What makes you think they're really going to institute something that would effectively wound Gamestop?
