Why do you think there's such a huge population of metalheads here?

Everyone's expressing their uniqueness in the same way!

Probably because heavy, fast paced music can help set the mood for your next match of CoD or TF2 or whatever.

Just curious. Most of the other forums I'm a member of has a much lower concentration. I'm not complaining since I do like a bit of metal myself, however.

So, Escapist, why do you think it is?
Video Games and Metal have one thing(among others) in common: They're both have a "larger than life" and "fantasy" vibe to them.

Find a game with an epic battle and you will probably find about a thousand metal songs about an epic battle as well.

That's how I think about it, anyway.
If you're talking Power Metal maybe.
The "larger than life" vibe still applies. Metal from all different sub-genres sound "massive". Video Games also often have a "massive" plot or world to them(in both meaning and narrative).

Granted, this doesn't apply to oldie games like Mario or Zelda...
I guess I can see what you're saying. Though in my own opinion it seems like a somewhat stretched comparison.
True. A lot of the games I play can be described as "massive", so that makes me associate it with metal, I guess.

Metal in all its shape and forms has a thrum to it. A vibe that makes your body move a certain way and channels your emotions. A little bit like techno with the 'duff duff' thing going on. Even if you hate mainsteam techno and house, invarioubly you'll find yourself toe-tapping or head-nodding to it.

Also the majorty of metal is not 'happy' music. Don't get me wrong, the metal I listen to always makes me feel happy; but there's usually a violent, angry undertow to the genre as a whole. This in my opinion does two things. It gives you an adrenalin burst, firing off endorphins and what not. The second thing is it provides an outlet for a lot of people who deep down inside just wanna say "fuck it!" and break something but can't.

Well, metal has loads of sub-genres as well, so even though metal-heads like to think they're an exclusive group it's actually a very widely accepted genre. At least I thin kso ,I could be wrong.

Because it's awesome? I should make it clear that I don't ONLY listen to metal, just mostly.

Because most video games have rather "hardcore" music playing in them. I'm not much of a "metalhead" as I am a rocker but most games don't have pop or rap in them... not including Parapa the Rapper.

Well for me gaming and metal have always gone together. I just love listening to some heavy sounds and awesome beats that gets me in a happy mood. Yes listening to metal makes me happy. I mean gaming introduced me to metal, in particular Dynasty Warriors 4 and Tony Hawk's Underground 2, where I heard my first Disturbed song and since then I've been hooked, along with many other bands. DW4 always had a heavy guitar sound mixed in with Chinese folk music.

Of course I don't just like emtal, I've also come to enjoy many other genres also due to video games. The Fallout series and Destroy All Humans! series got me into old blues, jazz and some country music. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction got me into epic orchestral music.

I absolutely hate metal. I like jazz and classical music.
You say it like you can't like both metal and jazz/classical. Listen to more metal genres you will find the those genres overlap a lot. Some of the best metal songs are based off of the patterns that originated in classical music.

I hate most of this new age metal shit, especially "hardcore". I'm more fond of thrash punk, which has always supplied me with the crazy headbanging needed for the crazy inner destructive teen in me.

maybe it has something to do with the high nerd population here, because the average Nerd is (statistically) gifted with above average Intelligence and more intelligent people tend to prefer more complex layered music and pretty much the only thing more complex than metal is classical music and that just doesn't have that big an appeal for most people.

i know there are a lot of statistics and weird dependences in there but there might just be some proof to it

People like to be different.

Enjoying metal passes for different.

Correlation?

Personnally, I'm an elitist musical jerk, but I hate metal more than anything. It just doesn't click. Okay fine, I'll admit it takes skill, but I'd rather be listening to droning mainstream with about 1 iota of musical talent on the disk then metal.
