Why does everyone on the Escapist love metal so much?

Because Metal rules. Foo Fighters, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead. If the guitar ain't screaming, it ain't worth listening. Why do you think Guitar Hero and Rock Band are so successful. The music just make your body wake up. There is nothing better when you're on the 6 am train to work than Drowning Pool slamming out 'Bodies'. Better than a caffiene mainline anyday.

Eh. Metal is too generic and boring for me. Most of it is just SLAM SLAM SLAM. I like the guttural vocals in death and the screams in black, but heavy metal vocalists suck. I'm more into Screamo and post-hardcore if I want intense music. But most of my library is split between indie, hipster, punk, and rocky stuff; Animal Collective, Neutral Milk Hotel, Minus The Bear, Bomb The Music Industry!, My Bloody Valentine, pg. 99, Saetia, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Bright Eyes, and Modest Mouse are some of my favorites.

The Beatles are my absolute favorite, though.

There's a link to my last.fm account on my profile. You can add me on there, if you like.

And, for the record: Foo Fighters aren't metal. Led Zeppelin aren't metal (arguably proto-metal, if you like, but I don't think so). Aerosmith isn't metal. Don't call hard rock and grunge metal.

I do not like most metal. Classic rock can be good in cases, and rubbish in others.

I'm much more a fan of indie/folk like Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and Johnny Flynn, to name but a few. Anyone else with me?

Now, right off the bat let me tell you, I'm not trying to bash metal here. The only music threads I've seen here are all "what metal bands do you like" and they're all the same handful of bands. What happened to people liking varied types of music? What happened to Classic rock? What happened to Alternative? What happened to Punk rock? Does nobody in the gaming community care about anything other than sub-par lyrics masked by the Open E and power cords of metal?
I listen to everything except rap and country. Mainly metal because it has high energy, the musicians are good, and the lyrics are good. I tend to stay away from Death metal because I don't feel like having some tell me about corpses and blood and gore. I get enough of that on TV. Protip: dont make generalizations like that if you aren't here to bash metal.

its the ultimate nerd music? they have bad taste? it makes weak unpopular kids feel big and channels their hate?

PS: I like some metal, mostly an indy rock guy. heavy rock/grunge is much better imo. QotSA ftw

Something to do with how our brains interpret sound?
I don't know, personally I always thought there was nothing wrong with liking a specific genre. But just to clarify I like a great deal of other genres. Such as Alt-rock, Soundtrack, Industrial, Punk, Electronic.

Wait!

Wait!!

Wait!!!

You talk about sub-par lyrics and open E powerchords in a bad way, but you mention Punk Music - A genre built of people not knowing how to play music.

Something isn't right about that one..

A lot of/most of metal that I listen to is like... Amazingly technical, and a lot of/most of the Punk I listen to is full of bad lyrics and powerchords.
Bad Lyrics & powerchords? wtf?? what kinda punk do you listen too?

I'm picking up conflicting messages.
And yes, I indeed listen to metal, mostly gothic doom metal and some black metal and industrial metal.

Personally, I actually like hearing what the lyrics are. My favourite "genre" is classic rock. Not a big metal fan.

Oh geez, don't tell me your one of those people who divides metal into metal, death metal, metalcore, hair metal, speed metal, grind metal, grindcore, bread metal, breadcore, candy metal, penguin metal, and other useless sub-genres...
