Having spent an entire weekend in a field listening to metal, I can honestly say I love metal to bits, but it is not the one true music. It is an awesome genre but can be as generic and boring as pop.

Some bands can only be enjoyed ironically, Man O War I'm looking at you! Others have a knowing sense of humour most people miss. It's just more varied in the sense that you can mix metal with any other style of music.

As much as I love metal, some songs just wouldn't work as metal, lets not ruin some classics.

Oh to be young and hopeless again.

I can imagine all the metal heads holding the horns in the air and playing with themselves over a picture of Dragonforce while blasting those damn people who oppose their precious music.

Don't worry young uns... you'll soon learn that going outside looking like a cross between a transvestite and a bat isn't very clever...or comfortable.

A BETTER metal cover doesn't JUST mean it involves screaming.

Go look for a good cover of Baby.
Well... Not Heavy in the sense you expected, but...

Payback - James Brown, a perfect song!

metal and rap are adolescent music for people in the mindset of teenagers, i'm not saying all metal is childish (see black sabbath, jimmy hendrix, motorhead, boris, melvins) and rap has had some mature material too (see DJ Qbert, DJ Format, NWA, Biggie Smalls) but people who preach only these genres tend to have not let their music tastes mature and I can't be arsed arguing with someone who hasn't grasped the wide variety of music

This thread is a good indication of why I am embarassed to admit to liking metal.

Seriously, you metal fans are fucking EMBARRASSING.
I second this. Seriously guys, there's liking metal, and getting retardedly and ignorantly obsessed with metal. It's a thread of douches saying metal is the one true music and that everything else is shit. Grow. The fuck. Up.

*EDIT* Metal can't make Ode To Joy any better.
BAM! That's three of us!

Clap - Steve Howe.
Bring it on!

to be fair thats increadebly narrow minded and childish thing to say, why cant people dress the way they like, why is it up to you that they look 'like a cross between a transvestite and a bat' perhaps you look like an idiot to many others, but its fine for you to look like a prat because perhaps you dont and thats just ignorent fucktards talking shit they dont know or understand.

be a bit more understanding of other people and there culture (yes metal is a culture) and perhaps one day you will gain a little wisdom, because its ok for people to be different from you and maybe just maybe they like it that way :)

Correction, everything sounds better in 3rd Wave Ska!
But there are some songs, you just can't change. everything was in that way for a reason.
Yup, 3rd wave bands do the best covers.

Anyway, as much as I love metal, OP is either mad or stupid (or high).

I'll give you a list!

Lou Reed- Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Clutch- Electric Worry
Black Stone Cherry- Peace Is Free
Misfits- Helena
Jimi Hendrix- Ezy Rider
Soundgarden- Black Hole Sun
Newton Faulkner- Dream Catch Me
Catch 22- Keasbey Nights

You really couldn't make those better my metalling them up.

Here is my question: Why dont you find better versions of metalsongs in other genres?
is it because:

a) metal is the best and whatever you do, it will end up sound worse!
b) nobody in their right mind would spend time trying to convert "men screaming on top of their voices to neverending noise" into something audible!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zis2TtxdFjQ Border of Life. Metal remixes exist, and I have yet to find one that matches the original. Admittedly, I'm not a metal fan, but I'm not hopelessly biased against it. Used to be, but that's not the point.

So. Good luck?

Edit: I'd love to see some hybrids, if anyone has something of the sort. Basically, a mix of classical/orchestral music and metal. Tends to be rather interesting. Instrumentals only, though - I dislike lyrics.

A few years back I lived and loved metal, now I have calmed down with my music as I now listen to things like Jack johnson and Newton Faulkner which i must admit WOULDNT sound as good if were metal, I mean I still listen to iron maiden and Metallica every now and then but not much anymore
