Basically, because it's already been through radio (30s), germans (40s), teenagers (50s), LSD/Dope (60s), video (70s), glue/heavy metal (80s), ecstasy/films (90s).
This. Except there have been times when books have been deemed evil (damn, too many e's in that sentence)
It is an "E"vil sentence, then...and now I hate myself.
And you deserve every last bit of that hate...

Your average human is a xenophobic nutter who is all too quick to grab onto pitchforks and torches. Humans are deceitful, arrogant creatures who don't care about truth. What they do care about is blame, who is to blame for this because it couldn't have been my fault. My son shot up a school, this is the fault of the game and not my fault for not being more involved in my child's life, for not caring more about my spawn.

Once you understand human nature this shit stops surprising you and you can move on with your life.

I dunno did you read any of the ignorant posts on some of those MM threads? That kind of mindset can come across as very scary!

Exactly what I was going to say except some missing TV (70's) Dancing (seriously pick your dance and period any time up to 80's for the font of all evil) Various Books and before literacy the devil made me. Failing that any excuse they can think of that may actually sucker a prosecution into going easy on a homicidal maniac for that historical period.

Doesn't even start there. If you go back as far as the first steam engines they were saying that these new fangled devices known as "trains" (which could manage a whole 6 MPH at full speed!) were going to kill people because their heads would fall off due to the sheer velocity.

When Jack the Ripper was stalking Whitechappel, the police had an extremely novel way to deal with the problem. An idea which, at the time, was radical - bloodhounds. The notion of this soon reached the ears of the local news papers the Evening Standard ran a front page "Police Gone To Dogs!", and ridiculed the whole thing.

Tabloid press and media have never really been effective at reporting truth, it always ends up with a shit-load of spin on it.

I have a more sinister theory about the media. The entire thing is a conspiracy to make us feel miserable about ourselves, our families, and our interests, which will in turn make us more susceptible not only to what the consumer-goods companies are pitching as the latest cure to our bad days but also to give politicians a reason to exist so we don't come to the collective realization that we'd be better off if we shot every damn one of them and constituted a government that knew how to stick to its defined role of defending the borders, keeping people from shooting each other outside 7-Elevens, and paving the damn roads.

It is counter to the interests of corporations and politics to have people happy. If we're happy, we're not clamoring for a salve or a savior. Video games are just the bugbear of choice because gamers are on the whole happier people because we're perfectly comfortable with our escapism, something the mainstreamers and the therapy patients envy and despise.

Sadly when BF2 was released in '05 the Army saw an increase in recruitment.... (because as any good gamer knows clicking a mouse and firing an M16 are one in the same) so who knows?
The military is also trying to make games that are useful as training simulators and I heard that they had made a game that they used as a recruitment tool. Generic marines vs terrorists where the other team always appears to be the bad guys. I don't know if it's still around though.

Because the world is a negative place. People hate other people and are quick to jump on something that alienates others even more. Gamers are like another race of people to non gamers. We are different, while they sit on the couch, macking on potato chips and flipping channels, we're playing games. And they consider that different and worse than what they are doing. If something happens it's not your fault. That is the mentality of most people. It's nice to see that there are some people (everyone at The Escapist) that are more accepting of others. Wow, I just made a 30 second speech about tolerance. Must. Perform. Seppuku. Just as a little added note: No is one of the 50 most used words in the English language, yes doesn't even make the list.

It seems to have started after the columbine massacre and people started blaming violent games for people doing violent things.

It's just a band-wagon thing.
Wasn't the columbine massacre scapegoat metal? i seem to remember an interview with Marilyn Manson in "bowling for Columbine"

The people who hates gaming and see gamers as greasy dorks are just mad cuz they're n00bs who gets pwned when they try.
Just like some gamers hate jocks and think of all of them as dumb-ass brutes, because they get pwned by the jocks when they try sports

It's just another scapegoat to blame. It used to be comic books, then it moved on to Television, and then Rock and Roll, then LSD and Marijuana, and then Heavy Metal.
But comic books still don't get the recognition that they diserve...
For sure.

Games were my sitter when i was growing up.so i see the link to how games could be an influence. still, Violence is not new by any means its been worse in past generations than this. these media cycles, have created a false reality in many aspects of real life. we could all list them for hours.

Media and Game Dev alike are businesses so, if someone will buy it, someone WILL SELL IT. But,who bought the material (that violent game or the media story)and why. That's the real hypocrisy.

They need to blame something for the bad things that happen in the world and can't seem to grasp the concept that some people are just bad and nothing is to blame. They need a scapegoat and choose games because they're an easy target. Older people still see games as something only social outcasts play so it makes sense to them when the media connects the dots. "Kid goes on shooting spree after playing violent video game Halo."
