I have a more sinister theory about the media. The entire thing is a conspiracy to make us feel miserable about ourselves, our families, and our interests, which will in turn make us more susceptible not only to what the consumer-goods companies are pitching as the latest cure to our bad days but also to give politicians a reason to exist so we don't come to the collective realization that we'd be better off if we shot every damn one of them and constituted a government that knew how to stick to its defined role of defending the borders, keeping people from shooting each other outside 7-Elevens, and paving the damn roads.
It is counter to the interests of corporations and politics to have people happy. If we're happy, we're not clamoring for a salve or a savior. Video games are just the bugbear of choice because gamers are on the whole happier people because we're perfectly comfortable with our escapism, something the mainstreamers and the therapy patients envy and despise.
