Why don't you do drugs?

I've just been inspired by the poll of people saying they don't do drugs, and kudos to you people for standing up for... something....
Thing is, as a recreational drug user myself it is hard to understand why people are so against it.
As such, I wanted to open up this thread for logical reasons why one should not do drugs and I'll see if I can respond to them.
Just so we're clear, alcohol is a drug as well. If you tell me you don't do drugs but you occasionally drink, you are a recreational drug user just without the stigma of being one.

I thought I'd be able to give my two cents on each reply but there are too many, though I'd like to say thank you because I like seeing how other people think.

I smoked a fair bit of weed in my teen years but I've never enjoyed being high. So I stopped. Haven't touched the Mary Jane in over half a year.

I drink a fair amount, and smoked weed once or twice. Its been about a year since the last of the latter though.

These things are enjoyable, that's why we do them.

I feel that I am odd enough without any added chemicals flowing through my brain. Both I and the world do not need me to get any stranger, or possibly have the desire to follow through on some of my thoughts.
One other thing is that I just don't see the fun in getting wasted.

Because i don't want to. I don't feel the need to. I cant see any reasons why I should, and with a history of mental illness in the family (and myself) its more likely to do more harm then good.

I see no reason to risk getting a criminal record just for a little bit of fun.

That and i've seen drugs really fuck peoples lives up and since Alcohol is so controlled the chances of screwing my life up is much less than if I were to take, say, heroine.

EDIT: Cannabis is fine by me, I know plenty of people that take it and it's mostly harmless with the only exception being the nasty stuff[footnote]There is two parts to cannabis, one is the bit that gives you a happy high feeling and the other is what makes people so calm but the calm part when made stronger causes severe depression. Or something like that.[/footnote], if they legalize it they could make sure people are getting good stuff instead of all the nasty crap.

I'm a caffeine addict.

I occasionally drink.

I've had medicine at various points throughout my life.

Anyone who claims to have never touched a drug in their life must have never drunk anything with even a hint of caffeine/alcohol or been ill enough to need paracetamol etc.

Hell, if you had Calpol as a child, you were a drug user.

When phrased like that, I find it rather entertaining.

As the OP said, these things just don't have the stigma of other drugs.

The only drugs I've taken are prescribed to me for ADHD.

Because I don't need an artificial/external stimulant to enjoy stuff. I'm also not very fond of what that sort of instant gratification has done to a lot of people's attitudes.

Never saw the point. Plus, you know, bad for my health. Sure, simple reasons, possibly silly ones, but that's about it for me. Never will go anywhere near drugs, alcohol included.

Well, unless you count sugar as a drug (no, that's not slang for anything, I do mean actual sugar), but I try to avoid that too.

Sometimes I ask people the thread question. The most frequent one I get is that they are afraid of losing control. Smart thing to do, because it could lead to a bad trip.

Ah ok . What makes you think being drunk isn't fun then? Personally I didn't understand it 'till I'd had a go myself.

Probably because there is a huge social stigma attached to it. If I ever got caught smoking pot I am pretty sure many, many people would never look at me the same way. Also, the severity of harm that some drugs do is disturbing.

Also, the shit is just too damn expensive. Gaming AND Drugs??? No way. I'd have to take out a loan >_>

I think its sad to need an artificial substance to enjoy yourself. There are health defects whether exaggerated or not. And I like the person I am, most of the time, if I want to alter my mind, overcome inhibitions and have more fun, I feel its something I need to work on personally. I believe in self improvement rather than relying on drugs to improve my time on Earth.

And no I'm not a drinker, besides the occasional glass of tasty things like tia maria or green ginger wine. To be more specific by occasional I mean the last time I consumed alcohol would have been half a year or more ago.

Even though you mentioned alcohol is a drug, I feel it's a little more separate from what drugs are when people say them. If you say drugs, people never think alcohol, cigarettes etc.

On the topic of illegal drugs, I don't do them because they cost a lot more than alcohol, with increased risk of being arrested for them (Granted, this can happen with alcohol too ) and the general stigma. If you're round a friends and you say "Oh me and Tim are gonna go out tonight, might get pretty wild and drunk!" They'll look at you like "Oh, you kids!"

Whereas, if you say "Oh, me and Tim are gonna go score some weed, get high, and eat bacon sandwiches all night" you'll receive some very dirty looks indeed. It's just the stigma, even though weed isn't that bad really.

Oh plus being high is the most bored I've been since I quit going to church, no idea why, as everyone else thinks it's hilarious.
