it was innovative cause microsoft were paying people to say it was
the only thing that made it different was the sheild and health
it wasn't the fist succesful shooter on the console that would've been goldeneye in many peoples eye

It's like somebody asking why people call Virtua Fighter, Soul Blade or Final Fantasy "innovative".

Because Halo innovated stuff. It this really so hard to understand? Recharging health bar. Dedicated grenade button. Really, really sharp AI. Two-weapon limit. A small arsenal that you get complete access to almost right away. Do I have to spell it out? Whether or not you personally like the game has nothing to do with how ahead of its time it was, and how much it changed the face of FPS titles forever. Besides, innovation doesn't equate with quality, so even the haters should be on board with this.
It did not innovate that stuff, just used it over from older games.

No, it didn't. Unless I'm wrong, movies like Aliens did.]

I'm going to go back to Games Workshop for the "Space Marine" thing, considering they are actually called "Space Marines"...

It's because Halo took all the stuff that other FPSs were doing right, compiled it all together into a big video game equivalent of brunswick stew, and threw it out there. It's not that it's the most innovative shooter. It's just the first one that got all its shit straight.
But it was still on the XBox, which broke shit a bit. (Shooters are more fun on PC, goddamnit.)

Bottom line, the first halo wasn't innovative, but as somebody above stated, refined the FPS genre on the consoles to a degree that at the time was unmatched. Hell, it brought PC like playability to the genre of the home console FPs. Proving that consoles have a valid claim to FPS's. Also STARSHIP TROOPERS WAS THE FIRST TO PROVIDE THE WORLD WITH THE CONCEPT OF THE SPACE MARINE. Read the book. It's great.

Why? Why did you bump this monstrosity back to the top...especially to make such a meaningless and trivial point?

Read the rules - your not supposed to necro threads that are over a month old, but necroing a Halo hate thread...

It's better then all the good 'ol boys who praise Halo because that's what everyone else is doing. Seriously, everyone has an opinion, but there are still the facts to consider: Halo added nothing new to the FPS genre. Updated graphics are NOT considered anything new, that happens with every game. The dual-control style has been around since goldeneye, and regenerating health has been around since the SNES. All Halo did was popularize online play for the Xbox. And no, it was not the first online game either.

Love it or hate it, that's your choice, but don't spew information when you have no clue what you are talking about. That just lets everyone know how stupid you really are. Yes, I'm talking to you |Ancient|.

Now please stand aside while I perform the ceremonial necro-thread sacrifice...

Complete list of games Halo copied for each specific mechanic I mentioned, please? I wasn't aware anyone did recharging shields, two-weapon limits or dedicated grenade buttons before Halo. Even if they did, Halo took all that stuff and combined it. The way Halo made everything work was in itself innovative.

What do you mean no clue, my opinion about said game remains with myself. Also every thread that has mentioned halo involves the same people badmouthing it just mainly for the fact because it seems to get them cookie points with fellow 'hardcore gamers' is it just popular to bash on popular things like a lot of people seem to do with mainstream things be it Movies, Music, Vidya games?

theyre talking about the original halo which was very different from other FPSes at the time
How?
It was one of the first games only to use two weapons, not as many as you'd like (an example of those games are Doom, Duke Nukem, Marathon, etc.), and you could drop and pick up weapons as you liked, and pick up ammo for weapons that where empty, instead of just having the gun get dropped. Also the health and shield system was a little innovative and inventive.

P.S. I could be wrong on the gun and shield features not having been done in another game, and I am sorry if I am mistaken.

I know I probably shouldn't be helping to keep this thread alive, but I just want to add my feelings. And remember this is merely my opinion.

Was Halo innovative? Meh, it may have brought a few new minor things to the genre, but not enough to consider it an "innovative game."
Was it overhyped and overrated? Yes, but many games are.
Was it a great game? Absolutely, and the series continues to be.

Really? Because i'm pretty damn sure that's bull. Name the games it copied from then.
