Interesting. You see, I'm afraid the Xboner will succeed. It is built out of horrible decisions designed to alienate the audience. If this is successful anyway, what will the Xbox Two be like? How far will they try to push the envelop then? I shudder to think.

As far as those beloved franchises, I wouldn't worry. For one at least two of the ones you've mentioned have been "finished" even though further sequels are planned or already out. Should Xboner fail, those franchises will migrate to other platforms to salvage the damage. It might take a number of years, so be patient. Replay your old games, if you must. Patience isn't a trait of the masses these days, but it would be worth the wait. Trust me.

Sadly most of those IPs kinda suck now. Halo hasn't been good for years. Rare had 1 major hit in their lifetime...and M$ is using the "GoldenEye" name on something entirely different anyway.

Honestly, Sony has the better exclusives.

I'm thinking about trading in everything 360 I own to pick up a PS3 and play The Last of Us. I'm way late PS3 party, but I feel like I should start being nicer to Sony.

If microsoft explodes you can still play gears of halo because the 360 doesn't want to be "sometimes on".
Your ability to play the games you bought is in no way connected to the fate of a corporation, unlike what they try with the xbone so it's kind of ironic that you fear its failure.
It is designed to actually make your fears a reality.

So it looks like the current way Microsoft's going, the PS4 will seize a whole lotta of business from the Xbox. Now, normally I wouldn't have any problems jumping ship from the Xbox to the PS. But there's a problem. Whatever could that be, you ask? Well, I'll tell you.

Microsoft has the rights to a lot of good IP's. For example, everything Rare has ever made, they have the rights to. Gears of War, Mass Effect, and, most importantly to Xbox fans such as I, Halo. If the Xbox One fails, it will drag all those awesome franchises down with it. We may not see them for a very long time, if ever.

No doubt there are some of you who will say, "I don't care about those games." And you know what? I wish I didn't either. That's the problem. While I don't want Microsoft to get away with their horrible console decisions, I also don't want some of these IP's to die. That's what I fear. Does anyone else feel the same?
Mass Effect is not a Microsoft property. It's an EA property. I would hope that EA/Bioware will incorporate the possibility of platform failure into any contracts they draw up. Now EA on the other hand....

Sorry if this has been addressed already.

What? They only have Gears of War and Halo. Both are of no interest to me. Sony always had better exclusives. If Xbone fails it will be good for the future of consoles. It will tell the companies that there is a line that they can't risk crossing.

If the Xbone failed hard enough Microsoft would probably just THQ some of their properties away for a bit of spare cash. Studios with exclusivity deals would likely jump ship or wait until the contract was over and release their games on other platforms. The IPs are going to 'die' with a failed console. If Microsoft decide to leave the games business then they would have no reason to keep any of the rights to games. And just because the Xbone flops doesn't mean they are going to stop making/publishing games or even stop making hardware.

Microsoft made games before the Xbox too, they'll keep making them after.
I'll have to go with this. IF they actually care about making quality games for gamers and continuing old IPs and actually putting any amount of thought behind them, then they'll just release these IPs on PC, meaning the IPs won't die. However, most of the IPs mentioned by you have already played themselves out, and don't necessarily need to continue(I'm mostly looking at you Halo), or aren't Microsoft exclusive anymore(Mass Effect) and so won't die with the Xbox, but in their own time.

At any rate, the Xbox One needs to fail. Simply to show that gamers won't put up with the crap Microsoft seems to think they can throw at us. While the PS4 doesn't look like it will be some great improvement from the last generation, at least it isn't a step backwards, and at this point in the gaming industry, lateral moves are the best ones we seem to get.

^ That is everything that Microsoft owns, IP wise. As to selling the IP's see above example with Freelancer. If Microsoft keeps up this ****** behavior, you can say goodbye to all of those. And I didn't say Microsoft was going to fail. Of course not. I said their console and, by extension, Microsoft Game Studios might if it keeps going the way it is.
You do realize that the vast majority of the franchises in this link are not console games right? That's the problem with a wikipedia post, its like a gun with a barrel that's pointed at the shooter. Also, MS doesn't actually own a some chunk of the IPs listed in the link, like Shadowun(an independent sequel is coming very soon made by the creator of that franchise). Also, most of the franchises in thee link you posted haven't been touched in anywhere ranging from 10-15 years.

Can we be real here for just a second? I've been saying this on the forums for quite a bit now, the Xbox brand has already lost a lot of exclusives to PC and to Sony in the PS3-360-Wii generation.

How many JRPGs did we see jump ship after faltering sales in some vain attempt to gain Japanese customers?

How many exclusive DLCs did we see from Bethesda that didn't really give an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game a sales edge?

How many franchises jumped ship after their first game proved that multiplatform just made sense?(Saints Row, Mass Effect)

My point is, the Xbox exclusive franchise list has been shrinking when it comes to consoles. And the franchises left are starting to feel the effects of over-milkage or core change.

Look at Halo 4. Its multiplayer is not closer to COD so its not as appealing.

Look at Gears of War. The 4th installment in the series bombed in terms of sales compared to the rest of the franchise.

Look at Fable. With Fable 3 being "meh" and Peter Molynuex no longer a part of Lionhead to overpromise on mediocrity, whatever spark that franchise had is dead.

So we're left with Forza and some crappy Kinect franchises. Sure MS says that they'll have 15 new exclusives at E3 and 8 new IPs, but to be honest, be prepared for some XBLA titles that will wind up on Steam a year later with 10 times the sales. At least the PS4 has some games to look forward to already, with more to be announced.

The XBox One has some major problems, but the Xbox brand caters to heavily to the shooter genre. Sony always has some sleeper exclusive if the Yakuza series, Ico series, and others prove anything. The Xbox brand is in trouble, big time.

Another knock against the Xbox One is the fact that MS can't really justify XBox Gold accounts anymore. Paying extra for multiplayer access and online feature is leaving a bad taste in people's mouths.

If MS wanted the launch of Xbone to be a success then they should have manipulated a dry spell in new titles. Instead i have Remember Me, Batman Origins, GTAV, Watchdogs and others all preordered and none of them will work on the Xbone so why trade up?

Well, thanks for allaying my concerns everyone. Shouldn't have mentioned Gears and Mass Effect as Xbox exclusives.

Mass Effect came onto the PS3 with 2 a year after it was released on 360 and PC. The only reason at the moment I'm going to end up getting one is simply for Halo 5. I highly doubt that will come onto the 360. As for Gears, I wasn't very impressed with Judgement, so as far as I'm concerned, the series ended at 3.

The xbone isn't going to do that badly. The microsoft brand and xbox brand still have a lot of pulling power, and the casual masses will eat it up.
I don't think the, "casual masses" will eat it up. I'd consider myself casual more than a hardcore gamer, and I know many a people who fit right into the term casual, and even they say that the Xbox One is not for them. If anything, it will be the people whom are always on their consoles, who always have their consoles hooked up to the internet, and who always pay full price for games. So yeah, don't blame the casuals on this one, because casual gamers tend to look for the least amount of hassle.

The PS4 is probably going to have very similar restrictions to the Xbone and valuable IP won't sit unused in any case, as if worst came to worst the IP would be sold and would find a home on new platforms, given there is still a market for it.

Does not worry me. Of that entire list, the only things worth keeping are the Battletech and Mechwarrior IPs, and Microsoft hasn't done anything worthwhile with them since Mechwarrior 4, anyway.
Depends on your definition of "worthwhile", but Microsoft leased the Battletech/Mechwarrior IP to Infinite Games Publishing, who has since created two titles: Mechwarrior Online and Mechwarrior Tactics. Both F2P, the first a FPS, the latter a turn-based strategy.

Personally, I don't consider either title a worthy successor to MW4, but they are officially a part of the franchise now. I wasn't sure if you were aware of them.
Well, thank you for letting me know about them. I had encountered them before, however, and though I appreciate that at least someone is trying to make new Battletech games, these games are multiplayer-only which means that (A) I have no interest in playing them since I do not like mulitplayer, and (B) If I did play them I would always lose due to lag, since I am in Australia and most other players would be in the US. I so badly want a new instalment in the style of the original Mechwarrior games, or even a reboot of the series and going back to 3025 tech levels. The official post-clan stuff was starting to get ridiculous, anyway. I would like to see something based around the early days of the Fourth Succession War, or even the Third. But I must have a comprehensive single player campaign!

Even if the games I loved the most were Microsoft IP, I still hope to God their new console tanks. They've crossed too many lines. I think everyone can see that their product is just morally unacceptable. It's a clear move to try and monopolize the market at every turn, AND spy on their own customers in the process. Add to that that all games that will use the always-on DRM will be defective by design: at some point, when they're no longer profitable, the servers will shut down and the game will just disappear from the face of the earth. We have to show that there is no market for such a product.

Actually, I'm really afraid that it won't tank: if they have enough good exclusives, most of you people will fold and buy it anyway. Few people really stand by their principles when it comes to minor conveniences. I mean, look at SimCity with its dreadful DRM. Sure, there was an internet outrage about it, but only after they ran into server issues, which made the game unplayable. People started hating on always-on DRM then, but only because, at that time, it was inconvenient to them. They were outraged about one of the symptoms of the disease, even though they knew the disease was there before they bought it. They didn't care about the fact that the disease is a festering cancer that has the potential to slowly ruin the games market, no, they're only outraged when the disease gives them mild nausea RIGHT NOW, TODAY. I'm sure that, if SimCity's always-on DRM did not come coupled with practical issues, most people wouldn't have cared, and that is very disheartening.
