I like to think because anime has a better quality than most cartoons so people are attracted to the spectacle and foreign nature of it. Plus, in my opinion, most of the best games ever are from Japanese developers. So you know, gamers~anime fans.

I guess because there is something for everyone in anime. I'm not into anime but I liked Deathnote. Others just find more of what they like.

Because if you can get a good, non-dubbed anime, with little filler (and there's plenty, don't let anyone tell you otherwise), anime can compete with any other form of medium.

But anime i still looked down upon by mainstream society in most cases, but on the internet, noone cares. Nerdy people tend to enjoy things out of the 'ordinary' so you'll see it more commonly where we tend to gather.

It's a fad, it has been a long time coming. The US, and then the other plebdoms, is adopting a mirroring fad, where they nerd over Japanese stuff, while the Japanese have been nerding over USAn stuff for how long, 40 years?

It's a foreign culture, easily accessible and easy to claim to be a fan of since they are cartoons with better visuals and a plot. Most of the appeal comes from the world-view and sensibilities of a foreign culture. Once you become accustomed it becomes preditable and boring, revealing the horrible secret that it's the same kind of pasty dribble that haunts the western media, but the paste was made in japan.

2026 is going to be all about the eastern european animation, just you wait.
I know that in the early days Russian animation was the shit. I can't wait for that to happen again.

I like anime because it's actually good, unlike most American television (imo). If I had the BBC channel, I'd watch that too. The only American shows I'll watch are certain Travel Channel shows and Futurama.
Wait wait wait. Not even HBO, that channel is like the beacon of scripted drama in the modern age, it just does things SO well. I absolutely can't wait for the day they choose to start a sci fi show on that channel.
I actually don't like a large majority of shows on HBO. Stopped paying for the channel way back.
Wow i didn't realise quoting no longer directed a question at an individual anymore.
/sarcasm.

Their mature and very plot driven, which means you have to pay attention. Which isn't something everyone likes i can understand. But i love it and its a shame there isn't more.
HBO delivered to me Game of Thrones and The Sopranos, for that alone I would forgive it of almost any other sin.

I like a mix, a little DBZ here, a little DCAU there, Transformers one day, Haruhi the next. It entertains me and that is all I ask of it.

Also, Hayao Miyazaki is a wonderful man who has created some really amazing films: I'm sure he and Walt Disney will have much to talk about when they finally meet.

I wonder how many people just read the thread title and not the OP, and therefore missed that the question is about anime avatars.

Granted, I think the answer is the same either way (cool artwork). I know I like all of mine.

As a Japanese person, I can't help but admit that white anime fans make me uncomfortable.

They're good people; I'm friends with a lot of them and discuss/watch anime with them, but...nyeeeeehh...It's fine if they're Asian, but white cosplayers just have that "fish out of water" feel to them. And they tend to have god-awful pronunciation of other languages too (Japanese isn't that hard to pronounce. They use the same damn syllables for just about anything. Hime is not pronounced like "thyme"). It's a small prejudice I have that the internet kindly alleviates by not making me see your faces. You're all good people here.

In any case, here's why anime is popular: In the west, cartoons are for kids. Anything stylized, exaggerated, or drawn is given a childish aspect. It's different in Japan, and it's treated as a legitimate entertainment medium there. As a result, there are people who actually take time to develop the story, expand on the artwork, and adopt subject material that wouldn't be acceptable in a children's cartoon. It's new and different, and everyone loves new and different. Furthermore, it's particularly interesting to note that the popularity of anime is expanding probably because the number of people who grew up watching anime is increasing. Obivously, a childhood of watching anime helps it retain a sense of familiarity with the viewers.

Considering that I've seen all of those shows I must say that this is definitely a great summary of the Subject of Anime.

Patty FTW in Soul Eater and Honestly no one is greater than Kamina. Hell even Chuck Norris wears Kamina Pajamas

Anime FTW

Well you certainly never saw Japanese Otaku :-O
Like the ones of Hirano Aya or the like, who tear their manga in twain because she apparently likes men :-O

Japanese otaku are the ones who make me feel uncomfortable :-(

Because liking anime instantly makes you an otaku.

Also, comic book guy, so your argument is fucked anyways. Next.

It depends on the anime

I wont watch a crap anime with a shit story over a great T.V series

I will however watch an anime if it has a good story such as welcome to the n.h.k or fma

To me it makes no diffrence if its live action or anime

Theres also a sort of social value to it with many people who watch anime feeling like their part of a special minority

First, before I have anyone trolling this post about how I "Just don't get anime", you can see by my avatar that I'm guilty as well. Code Geass ftw!

Anyway, about 80% of the avatar's I see are anime characters. Any idea why?
because anime is awesome. also anime is a pretty stereotypical nerd thing and the second you start regularly visiting the escapist, you are a nerd.

in all seriousness though, anime and video games are pretty closely linked. take jrpgs, for example. a jrpg is basically an interactive anime

I ask myself this same question sometimes... I just can't stand that animation style. The eyes, the anime laugh, I just, ah I don't know. Anime was probably the only thing that kept me from loving Halo: Legends.

Because you're on the internet. Lots of people are on the internet, and lots of people like anime. Therefore, lots of people who like anime are on this site.

Science triumphs again.
