It's not that people fear darkness. They fear the unknown and what they don't know. People are afraid of the dark because they don't know what it holds.

I fear not the darkness or that which lurks therein as I fear not death I fear not conflict, I embrace that which frightens those who cling to life.

I only fear that I may not take anyone with me when I do fall, and in that fear I train.

well, i'm in it, and the monsters say they want a treaty in which you offer your first born son to them.

Because the Vashta Nerada hide in shadows and strip the flesh off your bones in a milisecond when you leave the light.

(The Vahsta Nerada are a race of microscopic swarming creatures from Doctor Who. The name Vashta Nerada means "Shadows that melt the flesh".)

Advice for different Doctor Who foes:

Daleks: Aim for the eyestalk
Sontarans: Back of the neck
Vashta Nerada: RUN!!

Because darkness is unknown. We cannot see what is in the darkness, so we are scared of it. It cloud our vision, limits our knowledge. Any good horror film maker knows that the unknown is the scariest thing there is: thus why films such as The Ring depend so heavily on the fact that we don't actually see anything until later in the film.

What we don't know is always scarier than what we do.

I doesn't afraid the dark.

Actually, I prefer darkness, I prefer the night to the day, the "gloom" to the sunlight, the shadows to the light. Some say that's just symptomatic of my condition, I might agree to an extent, but I also think it's just part of my personality.

the reason is probobly because white guys are afraid of black guys that might be hiding in the dark and then your saying well what about black guys being afraid of the dark well they are afraid that they won't be able to see themselves. (I know its racist but I couldn't think of any other reason except that they fear the unknown and/or are republican) =]

Every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark - except it's not irrational...

All fear stems from the unknown. Seeing as how darkness is the unknown in it's most literal form it sort of makes sense to me.

It's not necessarily the Dark itself, per se. More so the fact that humans HATE the unknown. With a passion.

there is no point in fearing the darkness, just fear what's hiding inside of it.
My sentiments exactly. Whenever I'm in 'that' mood and I look at dark rooms I feel like something is watching me. Whenever I am in the other mood I am the thing in the darkness watching other things >_>

Because sometimes, there are ninjas in the dark.
And if you've ever had a ninja jump out at you, you'd better be scared.
Pretty much this

Funny you should say that. Because as you see, underneath all of my hockey masks and sporty jackets, I look like this:

To answer what you're probably thinking right now: Yes. It is, in fact, on.
