Why is darkness scary?

It's not that people fear darkness. They fear the unknown and what they don't know. People are afraid of the dark because they don't know what it holds.

Because darkness is unknown. We cannot see what is in the darkness, so we are scared of it. It cloud our vision, limits our knowledge. Any good horror film maker knows that the unknown is the scariest thing there is: thus why films such as The Ring depend so heavily on the fact that we don't actually see anything until later in the film.

What we don't know is always scarier than what we do.

Actually, I prefer darkness, I prefer the night to the day, the "gloom" to the sunlight, the shadows to the light. Some say that's just symptomatic of my condition, I might agree to an extent, but I also think it's just part of my personality.

the reason is probobly because white guys are afraid of black guys that might be hiding in the dark and then your saying well what about black guys being afraid of the dark well they are afraid that they won't be able to see themselves. (I know its racist but I couldn't think of any other reason except that they fear the unknown and/or are republican) =]

My sentiments exactly. Whenever I'm in 'that' mood and I look at dark rooms I feel like something is watching me. Whenever I am in the other mood I am the thing in the darkness watching other things >_>
