They like ponies. I am not intimidated by people who like ponies. If those were Nazi ponies, then I'd be worried.
And if you think most of the people who like it have never seen it, you are awfully mistaken.
Most of the people who dislike it, on the other hand, have in fact not seen it.

Oh yay, this fad again.

Honestly, the show looks ok. I just wish everyone would stop bringing it up so much though. Now most non-believers either hate it with a passion or are have been driven to apathy by the near constant barrage of pony pics/threads.

I feel as though people can like what they like if they do it quietly. You don't see me posting about Homestuck or Scrubs on a regular basis. ^_^
Actually, most of the Ponies, besides the avatars, are contained within the user group. This past month I'm fairly certain I've seen more "What is with the MLP" threads than actual MLP threads, which are usually made by people who are not yet in the group.

I started watching it today, and i am a fan, it's very well animated, adorable, and oftentimes flatout funny, not vulgar funny, but cutesy funny. I wont be changing my avatar, mind you, but it entertained me and you may like it too.

Because its good.

No, seriously.

Stop it. I'm being serious, it is genuinely enjoyable.

Stop looking at me like that, I actually mean it.

Its not ironic, its not a joke, its not a prank. People watch it because it is genuinely enjoyable. Yes it is for little girls. No, it does not sneak in adult content under the radar. The stuff aimed at little girls actually resonates with adults by some cartoonagraphical witchery. Sure, most Bronies (Male My Little Pony fans) get a bit of a kick out of how they were dead convinced it was all a joke at first too, but that is an enjoyment heaped on top of genuinely enjoying the show. The show was made by the creator of Powerpuff Girls, which was also genius. Watch the first 3 episodes, so you get past the kinda slow 2 part introduction and then watch a real, proper episode. There's an excellent chance that you will feel like a little kid again filled with child-like wonder. Or maybe you spend an hour being unimpressed and you understand the Memes a little better.

You see those avatars because the show is awesome and yet, every rational bone in your body says that it shouldn't be.

Oh and lastly, its MLP: Friendship is Magic only. The rest are the extended toy commercials you are expecting.

Meh, I watch it on youtube. I've seen all the eps and I find it addicting to watch, but I certainly wouldn't mention it outside of the internet.

Aww, I'm always beaten to the punch with these threads, and it feels so redundant just to repeat all the excuses reasons for watching this fine show.

So how, without resorting to posting pictures of ponies, do I make this comment valid? How do I attain worth?

...
Man, Q was Discord! How cool was that?!

Oh Jesus Christ, its THIS thread again....

OT: The show is popular because it's good ie: why anything is popular.

I can't tell you why it's so popular, but I liked it because it was entertaining, and it has some of the funniest fan art I've ever seen which only adds to that. (And some extremely disturbing fan art *shudder*)
It's the same as "why do people like anime, and why is there such a massive fanbase behind this anime" It's what people like and some people just happen to take how much they like something to an astounding level, the internet just allows these people to condense into groups and websites.

Watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, if you don't like it, that's fine just don't go becoming a brony hater.
You might like it, so at least give it a chance if you have the spare time.

Uh... DR Whooves, That is all...
Seriously though, I'm fairly sure I remember hearing that the creator openly admitted she acknowledges her adult fanbase and appreciates us so... it's aimed at everyone.

Seriously. USE. THE. SEARCH. BAR.

OT: The show is funny, has great animation, and strong characterization. That's why I like it and that's why it's so popular. That and the creator of the show has quite a good resume when it comes to the shows she's worked on.

I honestly don't know. I've never seen any MLP shows in my life. Am I missing a 'must see'? Constantly I see people's avatar as something to do with MLP than anything else, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against it.

I'm totally not sure if it's all a joke and people put a MLP avatar (usually a .gif) just for laughs. If it is a joke I don't get it. Maybe it's not a joke, maybe people like the show. If you do like the show, what's so amazing about it? Please educate me.

Oh, and what's a 'brony'?
The characters are awesome, and well written for a "kids" show. The animation is pretty good. Some people actually learn a thing or two from it. There are decent people in the fandom. There's some amazing artwork in the fandom. The list can go on.

Overall, it's just one of those things that some people like and some don't. And yes, I actually like it. I'm not a joke.

"Brony" = adult (usually male) fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Any why's the show popular? Because a lot of people have seen it and like it. It's all over Youtube if you want to check it out. Really, it's that simple...people really like the show.

Because it's the next internet fad. Just like nyan cat. It will pass in time when something else comes along.
Yes, just like how Doctor Who became unpopular and boring when Torchwood came out.

Since you're obviously some time traveler from the past, here's a basic rundown of how stuff is in 2011.

The president is black. It was a pretty big thing.

The tenth anniverssary of 9-11 happened. That was a big thing too. Unless you don't know about 9-11 yet. In which case, don't go on any planes on 9-11-2001.

Futurama isn't cancelled anymore.

Women can vote now, apparently.

We can now store food by keeping it cold.

And Michael Jackson is dead.

This thread has been created so many times in such a small time frame that it should be against the rules already, I mean I don't even watch MLP but I'm tired of hearing this, they already explained it like a bazillion times, so stop asking and use the search bar.

I bet that more than half the people who say they like it, have never actually seen it. They just say they like it because they think it's a cool thing to say. It's not. It's a cartoon about ponies. There's nothing cool or interesting about it and they all know it.
You know, people just keep on telling me what I am thinking, and every time, I call bullshit.
I mean, insisting that you can speak for me is something that really grinds my gears.

I'm not watching Friendship is Magic because I want to be "cool," I'm here because I'm the one who was already scouring children's media as research.
I like this kind of stuff, and I love children. I want to illustrate children's books someday.

Now, why don't you refrain from putting words in people's mouths instead of being rude and declaring yourself superior to others over a damn cartoon?

Its because people have to feel better then others. Plain and simple. If they don't like something, then everyone else just HAS to agree with them or they are either "lame" or "joking" with the show and not real fans.

Well the problem is, to a lot of "bronies" if you don't like the show, you are immediately a hater because of it. I watched 5 episodes and still have no idea why its so popular, but bronies still say that I'm just hating on their show because I say I don't like it. It's like you can only appease them by saying you are an avid fan of the show, otherwise they spam you with MLP content which gets annoying very very quickly.
