and the semi-doujin mangas were great.
Which ones? If it was that old one you'd see in single issues, then it was Electric Tale of Pikachu.

There's also Pokemon Special, which is more famous but not as nostalgic. Badass though.

Or did you mean actual doujins? Because Pokemon ones terrify me.
Er? doujins doesn't necessarily composed of naughty stuff, even if they do sell very well.
I can't really remember, though. It was many years back. Some mangas are drawn locally in Taiwan, so they don't really appear anywhere elese, and those were for rent near 師大(NTNU).
Oh I'm aware doujins don't have to be dirty (I'm a Type Moon fanboy after all), it's just I haven't seen Pokemon ones that aren't. Which is kind of scary...

You mean the one wher Blue is all like "use Slash!" and the charmeleon cuts the Arbok IN HALF? Where Team Rocket is actually competent and one of the main characters was traumatized as aa child because someone tried to turn them into a brainwashed slave by abusing them? You mean that one?.

The games are amazingly complex and have more depth than pretty much any other RPG that you can find. If you have people to play with the battle system gets even deeper. Not to mention that the element chart goes far beyond the fire, water, wind, earth, heart, Captain Planet light and dark that you usually get. Pokemon was never about the story, it's just there to help the single player along. The game excells though, and is meant to be played for, the battles and the more you have to think about what you're doing the better the game gets. If you've ever seen a serious competetive tournament then you can see just what you can do with the game.

That manga would be Pokemon Special I think (that's certainly the sort of thing that happens in it). As for Pokemon being the most complex rpg..... NOOOOOOO. Fun though.[/quote]
Have you ever actually compared it to other, though? When you look at the competitive battling scene it becomes apparent just how much thought can go into a single pokemon and an entire team.

It isn't, is it? Not my type of game but I've never heard anyone insult someone for playing it or whatever.

I's say it's because its seen as childish, as well as the fact that the anime wasn't particularly good.

Personally, I still enjoy playing the games (including Platinum, and soon HeartGold) and reading the manga, albeit only Pokemon Special.

It's okay to not know anything about Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, or the Special and Electric Tale mangas.

Edit: Seriously, I adore the games and Special (and loathe the anime, card games, and just about everything else), but Ono's old manga is my favorite thing about Pokemon.
Agreed, I love Special, but I think I'm the only person around my area who knows of it at all.

I wish they could just stop making new pokemon and doing something interesting like combine all four regions! It's kinda obvious that they ran out ideas ever since luvdisc (I hate you so much)came along.
Further more, how many more pokemon can be based on mice???

EDIT: For all those who think Pokemon is a simple game for simple people:

Don't you mean five regions? :p

And they've already connected Johto and Kanto, why not the others? They don't suck THAT bad.

Dunno, might be memory 'shrugs'. And Johto and Kanto are LITERALLY connected as a landmass.

Because they have been using the exact same core mechanics, camera, and battle system as the first game in 96', whereas now the mechanics are tedious, the camera and animations is ugly, and the battles are slow, boring and unfair.

Meh, I'd be the first to admit to liking Pokemon. The anime however needs to be slashed with ten thousand paper cuts and dipped in alcohol.

Because it's childish, apparently, and it's cool to bash childish things on the Internet.

It's also cool to bash non-childish things, George Bush, Yahtzee, Oprah, Doctor Phil, prescription medicine, Scientology, furries, the GameFAQs boards, the Gamespot boards, /b/, 4Chan, young people, old people, middle-aged people, fire hydrants, Sarah Palin, furries, and the state of Texas. [sub]Rules and restrictions apply; see boards for details.[/sub]

Five? Anyway, I meant they combine all the regions into one game. And if you're referring to the new pokemon are bad, then I have to disagree.
Any pokemon generation that has a pokemon based on an electron in it, is a sign that they suck or on the process of sucking.

I see your repetitive argument and raise you the halo series, the call of duty series, and warcraft.

Also, pokemon is pretty awesome.

Because I spent hundreds on those damn cards only to gow up and lose interest in them and later on find out I was being a total idiot.

And the background music for the first pokemon gameboy game gave me nightmares!

The show is truly vomit-worthy. I tried watching it and just had to turn it off. But the games are awesome. Seriously awesome. I think Pokemon is frowned upon because lots of people played Red & Blue just as kids, and because the show is for kids...but I don't think the games are.
I remember the first episode where he's setting off on his adventure, yet he knew nothing of Pokemon. It was quite funny.
I watched an episode recently. He still doesn't he still uses a Fucking pokedex for the originals. Emerald to me, was the end of pokemon. Where do you go when you start to take pokemon out? So I said to myself, "I'll rape this one; most likely hardcore my starter just like everyone else does, get every pokemon thats worth my time, and leave the game to sit in my room with all the secrets and legendarys(that was the most imporatant part for me, getting the legendaries and all the starters), and have it be a constant reminder that it is the end of its life.

But no, diamond, pearl, and platinum. 500+ pokemon. Fuck. That.

Two Words:

"Anime Adaptation"
It was a game first numb nuts!

It is an awesome game. If you owned the concept to it you would be mad not to franchise the hell out of it!
If you're gonna dismiss Pokemon just because Pikachu is cute and you resent the fact that a child might want to watch a cartoon about his adventures and buy a cuddly toy of it, that makes you an arsehole!

Most teenagers are too overly concerned about how liking Pokemon might affect their image. It's fair enough, kids are bastards. If they can get over it and accept stuff like that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things (when you get older) they will discover a really immersive and engaging RPG.

People have talked about the the repetition issues. That's kind of true I guess, but look at it like this: when you buy a football game, it is just the same game. Football doesn't change! You can tweak the presentation, and make sure the details are more refined, but you can't change the concept of football. It's the same with Pokemon fighting. There are rules on how you can engage them. It is deceptively simple, but the reality is the the micromanagement and level of detail involved can lead to infinite possibilities, to the point where it's almost frightening! Take a look at http://serebii.net to see what i mean. It can't really ever change, and that's not necessarily a band thing. If you get bored of it, it's time to find something else.

I enjoy the game, but the anime really screwed it up. The sad thing is the guys making it is doing it on purpose so it's a "nexus" for kids leaving and kids coming in. But the manga OH GOD is it good.

I assume you mean the FFT for the PS? I haven't played Soul Nomad, but I have played FFT, and I still think pokemon is more complex. Harder? No. But deffinitely more complex. The thing is, though, that you don't really get to see the complexity unless you have other people to battle because it's really easy to beat the computer by spamming attack moves.

For example, with the whole EV and IV system you can manage your stats, nut deciding on the nature and EV placement is hard. Knowing what other pokemon yours will outrun and what they can OHKO is a huge part of competitive battling and requires a lot of planning. Combined with the limitation four move-slots and the weakness/resistance chart, you have a lot more to think about per team member than any game I've played so far.

If you want an example, Garchomp is pretty good when it's holding leftovers, but when you give it a Yatche Berry, an inferior item, it suddenly becomes nearly unstoppable because it can boost without fear of dying and can outrun most pokemon. The factors that go into this include the base attack and speed stat, the base power of the moves, the attack bonus from Sword Dance, the defense stats, the HP, and the effect of the item. The Sword Dance boosted attacks have to be compared to the stats of other pokemon you expect to face. You need to know what pokemon you'll be outrunning, what attacks from what pokemon will OHKO or 2HKO you, what items and moves the other pokemon has, and what other pokemon are on the other team.

Comparatively, a game like FFT requires you to deal with damage, different attacks/skills, equipment, position, and possibly items. There's a lot less hidden information, though, which turns FFT into a game about optimization rather than decisions and it removes a ot of the decisions that you could make. The correct decision is usually to use the strongest attack, with a few exceptions. Sure, you're target may dodge, but that just means you use the same attack next turn. You can create synergistic skill sets and teams, but this still usually revolves around cheesing out the opponent with bigger effects. There's little subtlety, just a lot of one-up-manship.

We all have moments when we get sucked into a pretty "meh" game and instead of siding with everyone else and not admitting that you just wasted 20 or so hours of your life, you try to defend it. We all have our guilty pleasures (for me its dynasty warrior games. I dont know why. Its more repetative than any pokemon game... EVER) but its not about defending it, it's more about playing it. It gives you more of a satisfaction than a thrill. Life's a garden, DIG IT!!! JUST KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON!!! And what not. If its a game you like then it doesnt need defending to a mass that doesn't want to get it/understand it.
