Archemetis pretty much nailed my opinion on the series. I got into pokemon when Red came out and I must've played that copy so much that I'm kind of surprised I didn't wear out the battery on the cartridge to back up my save file, actually. I got pretty good with it as well, to the point that I was using the gameshark I had to create a unique challenge for me: I could choose what pokemon I want at the beginning along with any moves that it can learn, but it must be my ONLY pokemon used throughout the entire game. Meaning, the first battle with Gary to the showdown with MewTwo. Good times...
However, whether this series is labeled as a "cash cow" or not is anyone's opinion but...Re-making the good ones again? Even with the new ones, I don't see any innovation. The combat system alone is still incredibly slow, even on a Nintendo DS.
Some of the spin-offs are good, specifically the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Though I just say that because Chun-Soft did those games, which made the awesome "Shiren the Wanderer" game. Even then, "Shiren the Wanderer" beats the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series in terms of roguelike games, though that is because I like roguelike games more then the pokemon parts they tacked on.
I think the "monster raising" games were done better in other games, with my favorite being the "Dragon Quest Monster" series. I haven't played "Joker" (or whatever the current game on the Nintendo DS is), but I've played "Dragon Warrior Monsters I" and II years ago and found those more entertaining. *Shrugs* I just saw something else shinier as I grew up.
