"Anime Adaptation"
It is an awesome game. If you owned the concept to it you would be mad not to franchise the hell out of it!
If you're gonna dismiss Pokemon just because Pikachu is cute and you resent the fact that a child might want to watch a cartoon about his adventures and buy a cuddly toy of it, that makes you an arsehole!
Most teenagers are too overly concerned about how liking Pokemon might affect their image. It's fair enough, kids are bastards. If they can get over it and accept stuff like that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things (when you get older) they will discover a really immersive and engaging RPG.
People have talked about the the repetition issues. That's kind of true I guess, but look at it like this: when you buy a football game, it is just the same game. Football doesn't change! You can tweak the presentation, and make sure the details are more refined, but you can't change the concept of football. It's the same with Pokemon fighting. There are rules on how you can engage them. It is deceptively simple, but the reality is the the micromanagement and level of detail involved can lead to infinite possibilities, to the point where it's almost frightening! Take a look at http://serebii.net to see what i mean. It can't really ever change, and that's not necessarily a band thing. If you get bored of it, it's time to find something else.
I know that it was a game first and agree that the games are awesome, I meant that the anime ruined the game's ability to be respected in the eyes of the mainstream public (Not because it was for kids/young teens and thus had less mature material than other shows/cute characters/less gritty storylines (I'm fine with all of those things), but because it was so badly written. The dialogue was horrible (As was the voice acting, especially in later seasons), the scenarios were usually ridiculous, even within the context of the show (again, especially in later seasons, they must have jumped the shark over thirty times), and there are far too many repeated phrases (a.k.a. Dora the "Explorer" syndrome), instantly sealing off all hope of it being taken seriously, even by kids ("To protect the world from devastation..." anyone?). I have no problems with the game or Pokemon in general, all I mean is that the anime is the reason that it is generally looked down upon).
(I apologize for not being clearer on what I was saying, I was trying to keep my reply simple. I'll extend it a little bit "The anime adaptation is what ruined the series in the eyes of most of the population, I personally don't give two ****s about the anime, know that the games are solid, and think it's unfair for the source material to be judged for a poorly executed adaptation, but, unfortunately, that's how the world works.")
