its a personal opinion thing.
People on these forums seem to think their opinion is the only credible one, though.

Not liking Portal says more about you than it does about Portal.
I'll drink to that. Portal doesn't have much in it for someone who thinks Rome: Total War is the best game ever made and who has SimCity 4 currently in his DVD-ROM drive.

Because it was innovative and totally original and it was a few hours of complete brilliance. Seriously, I found nothing wrong with that game apart from the fact that I couldn't play it for 100 hours more. But despite that it fit together perfectly.

I suppose next you're going to ask what is the big deal with Citizen Kane, Shakespeare's plays or Casablanca?
Please, tell me how Portal compares to Shakespeare?

It´s just a game not mankind´s greatest achievement.

Don't play PC games when they've been ported to other consoles, you are setting yourself up for major disapointment from the get go, especially PS3 with Valve games (valve regularly say how they dislike working with the PS3). Ports are sub par at the best of times, transfering between relatively high powered device with arcitecture A to relatively low powered devices with arcitecture B will never end well.

As far as I know nobody considers it one of the best games of all time (or anything remotely close). Anyone that does has either not played games before 2004 (like say, Narbacular Drop...oh god, having read so many people say it was original and innovative really is heartbreaking, I really expected more from the escapist community). It was simply one of (if not the) best game of 2007 (admitedly a terrible year for videogames). The humor in it was unusualy dark and well executed (especially for a videogame) and the story was told in an a different (generally considered interesting) way, so people dived all over it. Not to mention the gameplay being fun (or at least fundamentally different) to many other games of the time. Also everybody loves valve and mixed with good reviews and it being 'cool' to love, everybody loved it (Mirrors Edge on the other hand, a game probably just as refreshing and definately more unique, was generally poorly received due majorly to the communities hatred of EA).

Portal has a great and unusual gameplay concept that actually makes you think (at least in the later levels), nice "clinical" graphics (everything looks clean, white, sterile) and, above all, very dark humour (again, especially in the later levels). If you like none of these things, I can understand why you were bored.

Yeh. It's well ghey. No blood or nothing.
-_-
shock horror a game without blood and voilence!
its a brilliant PUZZLE game ie. you have to use your brain and there isnt any shooting unless you cheat but then you can only kill yourself or the turrets. Its a nice break to see a game thats not just about blood this is a better game about portals and cake.

It was very simple to get and fun to play. Sure it was short but that was good for it, it didn't need to take an entire day's worth my time to finish it. Plus at the end it gave me a good happy fun song to listen to for beating it, unlike most other games where i get sad sappy songs.
the song makes me want to cry, they played it at my friend's funeral, it was his favourite game and he loved the song

Because it was fun, 'nuff said. Maybe the ps3 version was worse by comparison to the others, come to think of it, the orange box on the ps3 sold quite badly. And in my experience with people who own ps3s, more so in case of people like you who use retarded IM speak at the drop of a hat and sport an utterly pretentious gaming avatar, they don't really go for simplistic, clever games that are AWESOME! such as p0rtal and half-life 2 (Best, game, ever). Though seriously, asking why p0rtal (Yes, I'm spelling it like that with a zero because it deserves nothing less) is good is like asking why a hot fudge sundae after a hard days work in the unforgiving snow is good.

It was a new innovative game design with dark humour and a theory that you cannot shoot stuff that shoots you, but instead use your head and a awesome device to get around it all.

Well, I haven't played it myself, but I have seen game footage of Portal. It looks like an original puzzle game with a good story. Plus, there's something about some cake comment the female voice does which makes people want to know what is at the end of the game.

Absolutely no game like it. There may be clones floating around, but it was a truly original game.
Surprisingly, it was originally going to be like Half Life 2, but with a portal gun. I'm sure everyone's glad that didn't happen, because now we have Portal.

Portal is a true innovation in design. Hopefully the next game will have more mind-boggling puzzles that make you think more about momentum and angles and...umm stuff, as the latter levels weren't really all that hard - just more about timing and getting your aim right.
