Why is Portal considered one of the best games of all time

When did this happen? I was not informed that Portal, a game that at least 40% of gamers haven't even played but only reference to sound popular, is considered above Perfect Dark and Tetris.
I can see how Portal isn't made for just everyone. It has only one gameplay mechanic, just used in different ways to solve puzzles and that's it. And it's incredible short, too.
I probably in retrospect wouldnt've picked it up if it hadn't come with 3 different games for the price of one. (I never played HL2 until the Orange Box.)

one of the main reasons it's so popular? it came bundled with the orange box. if it had only been available as a stand alone, i dont think many people would have played it.
while i found the puzzles resonably interesting (well, once you're past the first handful of levels anyway), im not sure i 'got' the darkly humourous stuff that people always bang on about... so there's some mad scrawling on the back tunnels and a crazy computer?? i fail to see what is either dark or humorous tbh.
anyway, it was something different, didn't out stay it's welcome, not sure why you wouldn't like it per se. but its not one of my greatest games ever.

It was nice enough, but the puzzles weren't that great, the plot had more holes than swiss cheese, the environment was downright boring and the "humour" was lame.
Brilliant level design, perfect length, great humor, and innovative gameplay. Is that enough for you?
mostly cuz people had never done anything like that and people like shiny new things, and cuz VALVe rules
Portal was a fun little game that nobody was expecting, so it tends to get overpraised. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, but I can certainly see someone going into it now with expectations of absolute greatness and coming away shrugging their shoulders.
I really liked it. It was meant to be a short, original, and funny puzzle shooter. It spawned one of the most persistent internet memes in years though (I won't say it), and it was really dull until the puzzles at the end, the game is half tutorial. I liked the song over the credits also.
