Why is this site so split about Fallout 3?

Every day it seams, there is either a new topic about "how great Fallout 3 is" or "how Fallout 3 is destroying RPGs." Why is that? There is nothing wrong with disagreeing on somethings quality, but for the most part this site is set on its game. There are exceptions, like Halo, but never have I seen such a huge split then this subject? Is it because this site just has a lot of people that remember the old games and a lot of newer younger gamers that never got to play them? Or is there something else I am just not seeing?

People don't seem to understand the concept of "opinion".
I don't like _______. Because __________ .

I like _______. Because __________.

Lets assume the blanks are the same. Whats the difference between these two statements? Is one "right" while the other is wrong? No. How can that be so? How can two contradicting statements both be right? What witchcraft is this? I'll tell you. It's called personal opinion. When you state whether or not you "like" something, you are applying your own personal preference to the judgment of whether or not its "good". See...

opinion [uh-pin-yuhn] Show IPA
-noun
1.
a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
2.
a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.

See? Your opinion is meaningless. Why? Because the next person to come along and praise whatever you scorn, or scorn whatever you praise, is JUST AS RIGHT AS YOU.

Get over your personal opinions and find some games you like. Play them, and shut up.

Because a bunch of people gush about it, leading the other third to actively resist.

It's the "Portal Effect", also known as the "Fake Cake Effect", although on a smaller scale.

Where did you get that? Do you mind if I use that when the need arises?

Anyway, I'm not sure why it's so split like it is. I found it to be a good game initially, then once I got into modding it, found it to be a great game.

Not everything is opinion. Well it is, and it isn't. There are forms, accepted forms, there are known to be better by a majority, or, in some cases, by anyone sane. Some people believe that having sex with a young boy should be a god-giving right. This is just a opinion, right? No. It is not, because it is accepted otherwise.

So I believe that an opinion should be discussed, and more, should be argued about being better than another one. That's how you reach a consensus, by making everyone else believe that what you say is what they should be saying. That how religion does it, how politics does it, and how family values does too.

So, please, do enforce your opinion upon me, I might just as well agreed to it. Accept it as my own. Use what you want, but be sure that, some things work better than other. Politeness is one.

But that's just my opinion.

I disliked Fallout 1,2 AND 3, yes I played them, the premise and idea behind the game is fantastic but I feel the gameplay is blocky, rather dull and bogged down in to much needless mechanics.

Dude, don't u disagree wit me or i'll say wut ur sayin is just, like, ur opinion, man.

Oblivion with guns was LCD bullshit. This site is mostly teens. Thus, its popular here.

I was overjoyed that people, in general, hated oblivion and bought it only for it's modding community. Then... bethesda takes the exact same game, adds some fallout via madlibs, and suddenly its a masterpiece? No.
Was that even english?

How the hell did you manage to make the leap from "opinions on personal entertainment" to "what society considers moral or not"?

Thats like... a completely different subject. It's an area in which opinions are meaningless. For example, if i say i like a certain movie, you can either like it or not, and neither of us are "right". But if i say the earth is flat. I'm wrong. If someone says raping little boys is not bad for them, they are obviously wrong.

So no, opinions on entertainment, art, and non-falsifiable subjects should not be ridiculed, or discussed with the intent of changing. Ever. That's why opinions on what is entertaining or not are just opinions, and opinions on science and morality are widely considered "fucking stupid".

Fallout 3 was such a jarring change from the previous games that it divided the community. Fallout 3 threads on The Escapist hit 200 replies at times.
On the other hand... try posting something positive about Fallout 3 on a Fallout fansite (NMA, DaC), I dare you.

Here's the opinion of two people

Person 1: "The world is so huge and atmospheric"
Person 2: "The world is so big, empty, brown and grey. It's boring."

Person 1: "VATS completely makes the game. I don't want to do combat without it now"
Person 2: "I might as well be playing a Final Fantasy game if I use VATS. Pausing the action to take the highest percentage shot? No thanks. It's just a cover up for poor gun mechanics"

Person 1: "There are so many side missions, or you can just explore. I love that it doesn't force you to take on it's story until you want to."
Person 2: "So...my dad who I love very much is missing and possibly dead, but I shouldn't look for him. I should go blow up a town. Because that makes sense. The story is barely there"

Person 1: "It really sells that you're on your own having to survive"
Person 2: "Because the poorly animated 'characters' are poorly written and inconsequential"

Ok, I agree I went a long way out to prove a point. But, I still believe the comparison was for a purpose, sorry went to much on it and loose my point.

When I like something, and you're not, than both of us are completely right. I just can't say, NO YOU DON'T LIKE THIS. Buuut, saying that a movie is good, or is not. Yes, can be a truism. That's why we have critics. And that's why people listen to then. It may or may not matter what's your opinion on what critic says, but his opinion matter to a whole bunch of people.

Bu I'm getting a little side-tracker.

I just meant this, you should not consider opinion irrelevant, or, as you said, meaningless. That's what make things better, creates specializations, and, in the game world, mods. I just didn't like the way the first post I quote was saying "your opinion doesn't matter, my does not too". It doesn't goes like this. Especially in a forum, a place for opinion to grow I expand it selves upon others. Or are left to die in a lonely "HALO 3 HAS GRAET STORY"

Occasionally there's some objective evidence that gets completely ignored (on both sides), but this is mostly a matter of opinion.

I still hate the game, and hate Bethesda for making it, but I can see why some people might like it.

I don't think it's got anything to do with opinion of the specific game to people who don't like the game, I think it has to do with the fact that they don't think it was a great Fallout game. My favorite quote is "It was a great game, just not a great Fallout game."

Because this is the motherfucking internet, and the internet is WAR. PURE, UNADULTERATED, WAR.

People envisioned violent sports, or giant robots fighting, as a replacement for war? No.

Internet trolling is the replacement for war.
