Fanboys, that's why.
You may as well have written "FIRST!"
Are you saying that you don't know of any reasons except people's preference?
Are you saying his opinion is wrong? =p
If I am correct, unless a poll is taken to prove the reason, everyone's thought of the matter is an opinion
And In my opinion, I agree with his opinion.
..or perhaps I just like bolding the word opinion too much =/
I thought Dechef was being glib, which isn't unreasonable. Read the thread to see the resolution.
You are correct about what an opinion is, it seems a common consensus that Live is better. I want to know why it's considered better as I have no experience.

The idea of thread does not suit a poll.

I find PSN pretty good - no lag/dropouts.
Having never used PSN I can't say, but based on my experience with xbox live, if this is the case then PSN is infinately better than xbox live (automatically matchmaking me to intercontinental games is what makes me lag, but isn't an excuse when there are no shortage of local players).
Is it really an issue what rabid fanboys think?

So, XBL:
Paying to play.
Dedicated servers that aren't actually dedicated servers.
Only playing with other XBox 360 users.
I'm pretty sure 360 users could face off against PC users in Shadowrun. Whether you'd want to or not is another question.
You could.
But Shadowrun and FFXI shared a common problem. Paying thrice to play. Once for the game, a second for XBLGold, and a third for the subscription.
Shadowrun doesn't require a subscription other than your Live account.

Also, FFXI, because it has it's own subscription model, can be played online with a Silver level (free) account. (Phantasy Star Universe is the same).

I don't know.... XBL just seems simpler if you ask me, easier to navigate. I have both so don't flame me for not trying PSN.
Wait you haven't even tried PSN but you have it? I can understand not trying Home but a little look at PSN, I don't get it.

If you're talking about "LIVE" well Microsoft cut their teeth on the original xbox live and learned lessons from that.
As for XBLA well quite simply the XNA dev kit it gives out. Thats why you can get small developers creating stuff like braid.

Yeah, saying which online gaming system is better is kinda silly when you don't get to choose anyway, comparing PSN and XBLA downloadable game libraries probably makes more sense but I doubt we're going to get a definitive answer for that one either. I do think the downloadable libraries are more interesting than the retail ones, I prefer many shorter and cheaper games over a few expensive ones since there's always more variety between games than between levels and with multiple games you get to pick the genres you want instead of having to play the ones the developer gives you in a genre mishmash like Treasure (Gunstar Heroes, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, Sin & Punishment, Bleach DS, Ikaruga, ...) tends to produce.

Obviously, free is better than not free, but is $5 a month really such a damn hardship?
Depends on how much you use the thing, I'm not doing a lot of online gaming and most of the games I have aren't online capable so I get more than enough from the free-to-play systems. Other people play more online and probably have more use for a subscription service like that. My free month of Live expired completely unused, I barely even bought an online capable game in that time, never mind getting enough training to actually go and fight online (maybe it's just me but I always imagine online gaming to consist mostly of people who have mastered the game and will destroy anyone who hasn't). I have a feeling that a year would expire mostly unused for me as well.

And it doesn't help that Nintendo are incredibly overpriced. It looks good, but $23 for World of Goo? No sale.
You have to qualify that with a more exact currency sign since the game costs 15USD/EUR. Do you mean AUD? That would be dirt cheap for the PAL region (11.6 EUR compared to 15). The retail version of WoG is 20USD/EUR (30/40 AUD), that was the developer's/publisher's decision, not Nintendo's.

I prefer live because its got lots of changes and makes it fun at the same time,
PSN or whatever is free because people play the 360 more and dont care about the price of live, dont call me a 360 saint preching about 360 or live or anything! because im just saying the diffirence is alot better then PSN or ps3

I don't have PSN because I don't have a PS3 but I'm perfectly happy paying £40 a year for XBL. I have heard there are a few features that PSN does not have but I suppose it is free so probably better value. Like I said, don't have PSN so don't know if it's better or not but I think there's just some preference. I have a lot of friends with XBL and only a few with PSN so it's better for me to have XBL.

I don't play online that much, and so all I want is a nice free service that does the basics (downloads, online play, and chat) that's why I like the PSN. I haven't noticed any lag or bad connections beyond my own local connection, and have no problem finding things they're all organised by media type and genre.

Arcade, demos, and a halfway decent friend system, as opposed to some wanna-be second life. The 'Home' thing really doesn't work for alot of people.

Actually, I don't play online at all. I use XBL for its other offerings: video (mostly movies, but occasionally a TV show), Xbox Live Arcade games, messaging friends, and demos. But your point is certainly valid -- if none of that appeals to you, then paying anything at all would be silly.

I prefer the PSN. I don't play online enough to compare the two in terms of lag. But here's why I prefer it:
1. Credit/Debit card > XBL points - On the PSN I can pay in one click and I know how much in pounds sterling. No need to get microsoft points.

2. No limit on filesize - this means developers can make huge games if they choose to. We've already seen huge titles such as Siren (which can be downloaded chapter by chapter if you don't have space) and Wipeout HD. You can even download retail PS3 games as well as PS1/PSP titles.

3. Free themes/wallpapers/game soundtracks - all the themes I've seen on PSN have been free. I went onto XBL a few months ago and found that I had to pay for themes which was pretty annoying.

Alot would say its better because of the headsets that come with the 360, but personally I dont want to listen to a bunch of 12 year olds swearing at me. (Not saying that i get that on PSN but its alot less than i get on my 360). I only really want to talk to friends anyway.

IMO its easier to find friends on XBOX live and communicate with tehm, but the PSN is generally less laggy. I still prefer the xbox live though, I like their party system better and unlike PSN most people have headsets.
Not saying its significantly better, but "better enough" to justify the amount of money you have to pay.

Well we can all agree both are WAAAYYY better than the wii online service.
Two tin cans with some taut string is better than the Wii online service.
They don't really need to be tin, maybe some cardboard glued together,
