But why must I do EVERYTHING! fps's are very guilty of this in cod:waw its nothing but "MILLER grab that flamethrower" "MILLER grab those rifle grenades" MILLER MILLER MILLER! why cant on of my buddies do that while i just sit here and get headshots till he's done. don't even get me started on killzone 2

what other games do this...

It gives the player an important task to do.
gives you the experience of having to walk through a wall of bullets to grab something, normally :|

Ok, work on your grammar, it's shit.
I don't usually support this sort of thing but here it's justified. Please fix up your op.
OT: Halo did it a fair bit. The only time I really noticed my npc allies was when I turned catch on and they started throwing grenades everywhere. Gears of War, you companions were best used as distractions when on higher difficulties. Dark Messiah, npc would often forget your orders. This was particularly disasterous when I was an assassin and the cavalry turned up when I was sneaking about. I had to go and bail them out.

Legend of Zelda. Pretty much every single game.

Only you and the enemies can die. In Majora's Mask, the only NPC that dies without trying to kill you is a dying Zora. And, if you fail, everyone in Termina, but you don't see them die so it doesn't count.

Though some games don't go into this as much, either by having everyone work from the same pool of being vulnerable (WoW, Fallout, hell, even Pokemon), or by you being really special (idk). But mostly it's just a game mechanic.

Oblivion, I've gone from being a escaped convict to saviour of the freaking land and at level 20 and champion of Cyrodil no I'm not going to kill 12 Divine damned fish for you, do it yourself! Then there's the Thieves Guild, with the master thief, the Gray Fox asking you to steal things for him! He's a master thief and wearing Nocturnals mask, why can't he do these things?!?!

Fallout 3, out of the hundreds of people in the wasteland, why am I the only one that looks interested in blowing up Megaton? That can go on a perilous mission to retrieve a satellite dish and install it for GNR? Kill Harold, after wards the priest admits to knowing what he was on about.

In fairness, if every time someone offered you a mission an NPC popped up and said "It's ok, I'll take it", and then completed it for you, it might make the game a bit pointless.

Sitting in your base and filling out paperwork while other people are sent to do important missions sounds like an office management sim to me, and probably wouldn't be a lot of fun.

Actually, I'd say that pretty much every RPG out there is guilty of this. Even if you are the Only One Who Can Stop He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and HWMNBN's Legions of Terror are advancing rapidly, you are still expected to kill a bunch of rats in an old lady's basement or buy some flowers for her. The hag's also gonna be condescending about that.

Right now, I can only think of two exceptions: The Witcher, where just about every sidequest is killing monsters - which is how Geralt is supposed to earn a living - and the beta version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., where they'd put a bunch of NPCs following the same plot as the PC, but the retail version did away with that idea, because the player would unexpectedly get a "Game Over" message in the middle of the game because one of the NPCs has finished the game.

Not only do NPCs never do anything, they also give you nothing in return for your hard work and achievements, except more pointless missions, kinda ruins the immersion.

I can understand it in some games, Halo for instance, you're much better than everyone else on your side, so it makes sense to me that they'd want you to do the difficult stuff.

Things like Call of Duty though, where you're just another soldier, I'd like to see other people in my squad pulling their weight as well.

Why do I have to drive every fucking time?
Are you kidding? Driving is awesomely fun in that game. I hated every mission where you weren't driving (except the police raid mission where you have the AK that ends up jamming. That one was fun).

The best part was that the NPC's commented on how you always drove, and then they made fun of how you always crashed, you gotta love Rockstar.

The Black Adder avatar made that even more funny.

Though for some of you, perhaps you will remember this, "All you had to do was follow the damn train CJ." This is the epitome of raging at ally NPCs.

I think it is wrong to put that much hope/pressure on one individual, especially one who has only just joined Generic Space Marine Force. But hey games are unrealistic.

I must admit I would really hate playing a game where you are sent to base camp just because you got shot once in the head, I mean there's a point where realism stops being fun and starts getting just plain annoying.

Yea I don't trust NPC's to stand still and shoot straight let along do mission crucial objectives. Nothing more annoying that having to rely on a certain retarded NPC to do the simplest thing and then having to watch them fuck it all up because they are 1 can short of a six pack.

Long ass run on sentence. Anyway the reason is the give the player a feeling of heroism or badassitude(I know it's not a word). If the NPC's did everything for you it would just be an expensive interactive movie.
