Metal (particularly Death Metal) is probably the most mis-understood popular music genre I can think of, and has been since I was a kid in the 80s jumping up and down on my bed to Obituary and Slayer.

The biggest misconception people seem to have is that this musical style somehow makes people feel angry and violent... and hey, that's ok. I can understand why people would think so - on the surface it does sound noisy and angry and the imagery often focuses on dark themes that can seem angsty or childish.

Even the most devoted Slayer fans can't deny the crap-tasticness of their early album covers....

But.... this couldn't be further from the truth. It's all about release, catharsis and a joyfully primal expression of the chaos and aggression in us as humans, refined into something wholly positive and beautiful that, while it sounds like angry noise to most, makes us feel really, really good.

Anytime I've been to a metal gig the atmosphere has been thoroughly joyful and everyone is best buddies with total strangers for an hour or two.

Remember - the fat hairy dude in the Cannibal Corpse t-shirt who just knocked you over meant it in a manly bonding way.

Is moshing unsophisticated behaviour? Damn right it is. That's why it is great. Thinking we are sophisticated creatures is arrogant. We are primal, tribal, instinctive beings. We have not yet evolved past our fundamental primal nature. Sometimes it is a good thing to remember that and embrace it for a while, beat our chests and howl and let all of life's frustrations out through beautiful music and noise.

Though to most peoples' ears, it is but a raging cacophony, if you were fortunate enough to be born with ears that enjoy this kind of music, there literally is no other musical style that can give you the same joyful adrenalin filled primal rush. I'm 30 now and a fan of all kinds of music from cheesy pop to classical, but it's always metal I go back to because it is the one genre that consistently excites me.

As someone on this forum once pointed out: 'Metal is an expression of chaos through order (i.e.. structured notes) and it is beautiful and it is Zen.'

My questions to you are:

Do you 'get' metal and/or extreme metal?

Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?

If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls

To finish, I shall leave you with some sexy melodic death metal to make your eardrums happy :)

METAL! \m/

Also,the song you posted, win.

I listen to metal because it just makes me feel good in some way. Although, I don't just listen to metal, as quite a few metal bands sound very similar. And i hate pig squeal vocals. Pure awfulness.

I wouldnt say Im a metal fan (heavyst thing I listen to is disturbed, Im not sure what hard core metal heads think of them I'd be interested to know)

but angry/even depressing music can make me feel a million times better if I am angy/ depressed

Disturbed aren't very heavy, they're only a bit heavier than the likes of say, AC/DC, but they still have some good stuff.

Do you 'get' extreme metal?
No.

Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
I was happy listening to that, until the moment the singer started screaming. Around the one-minute mark.
At that point I would fit the "ARGH TURN IT OFF!" category.
In truth, I'm indifferent. I don't care what kind of music you listen to, as long as I have the right to not listen :)

If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
I'll just add to this one, that I have enormous dislike for anything screamo and everything growly. Do I like good heavy metal? Occasionally, although mostly when I was younger. Do I like rock music? Most certainly.

I have a varied music taste, I?m a fan of some metal bands: children of bodom, cradle of filth, slayer = Awesome

However, I?m a pop fan, Katy Perry, cheryl Cole. Rap fan Prof green, kayne west and can stand some emo shit

What I cant stand is rave music. I mean its just sound with no real direction. I was at a club last night and not nearly drunk enough to start dancing and was in good mind to start beating my ears to make it stop, spent every minute I could on the smokers balcony to escape it until I was dragged back in.

some days, when driving the hour+ back to uni, I just need something loud and full-on to make me feel better. I like metal when I'm in the mood, but thst's just like all other types of music; somedays I listen to nothing but Jazz.

I think the people who say metal makes people aggressive are rater silly though; our brains would have to be pretty damn soft and squishy if they think music is going to incite us into violence.

And I love moshing at gigs; no one looks after you quite as well as the big sweaty guys in the mosh pit; being only 5'7" I'm often smaller than most people in the pit, and get knocked over rather a lot. I am usually only on the floor for a matter of seconds before some big sweaty stranger drags me back up and fires me back into the chaos, I LOVE it! Besides, it's not a gig unless you go ome with your ears buzzing, hot, sweaty and totally knackered.

If people ever decide to take notice to the lyrics of metal. You will see that they have a very postive message(i.e: staying strong, not letting life bring you down), and that is what I enjoy most about metal. Keeps me pumped and positive.

I love metal. Admittidly I'm more a fan of metalcore rather than death metal but I still really enjoy it. There's no better feeling than being absorbed in a mosh pit and losing yourself to the music for a while to just forget about all the crap that life throws at you.

I love this topic.

Currently blasting some Defeated Sanity and eating beans on toast in honour of this wonderful, wonderful thread.

Nice to see someone else who really understands that death metal isn't about anger, but about joy. That seems so lost on so many people.

The bond I felt with 14,000 other people in a fucking ARENA when I went to see Iron Maiden was unlike anything I've ever felt before. I could go up to anyone and just...feel an immediate connection with them. :D

Metal has completely changed my life and is very important for making me the person I am today. It's brought me up when I was at my lowest and kept me going. Not a month goes past when I'm not excited for or getting a new album (New Devildriver in 2 weeks, FUCKING YES) and it's probably the main thing that can distract me from the doom'n'gloom of school.

Also, Jeff Walker has the best deff metUl voice in the world. :D

I was at the Kerrang tour last night (not exactly the most metal gig in the world) but again, for Four Year Strong (who took the fucking roof off) the bond I felt was incredible. If you haven't been in a bucket venue squashed up against 500 odd other people screaming every word back at the band, you haven't lived.

To answer your questions:

Do you 'get' extreme metal?
Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
Extreme metal on the whole whether it's tar-pit doom or breakneck grindcore just makes me feel alive and invigorated like nothing else. Sure, other things might make me smile or want to go crazy, but extreme metal is just on another plane. :D

Metal is the greatest genre in the world, and my ears aren't satisfied if the guitars aren't distortioned, the drums aren't hammering the double bass, and the vocals don't sound like they're tearing their vocal chords apart.

My favorite bands I would say range from In Flames and Children of Bodom, to All That Remains and Trivium. I love melo-death and metalcore.

As for concerts, I love them. It's the best place for me to be, especially with good friends. The really good bands have such a great connection with their audience and there's a bond between the people there that just feels great. I usually don't participate in moshing since I weigh too little and have very weak muscles, but it's fun to watch.

Oh, and I myself am a growler in training. And a guitarist. And I have dreadlocks (although that last thing might change soon enough).

I LOVE metal. But I cant take growling vocals.

A lot of black/death/whatever the "dark" types of metal are called have a LOT of melodic and beautiful music...but the vocals ruin everything.

Regular metal: Yes please.
