LMAO, I NEVER thought I'd hear F.A.T.A.L. be used to defend anything.

For those not in the know, F.A.T.A.L. is one of the three worst games in the universe, ever.

When asked why they'd made a "date rape" game, the makers argued about the word "date".

Just in case you wanted to know, Racial Holy War and HYBRID.

The first is obvious why it's so bad, the second...well...

RULE # 96 : To figure out how long it will take to write a novel or work of non-fiction @ C3 or C2 DP, you can use the soul equation for serious depth, else cloning equation. But, a much easier alternative would be or might be RULE # 3. But, for this stunt, a still more oversimplification of this might be [[(his C3 DP) / (your C3 DP)]*(time it took him to write his book)]. So, if he?s @ 50 C3 DP & it took him 5 years to write his book, and if you?re @ 10 C3 DP, then it should take you 5x this amount, meaning it should take you 25 years to write a similar book @ similar depth to that written by someone @ 50 C3 DP; but, this latter method or equation contradicts the soul equation, but doesn?t contradict the cloning equation, as predicted by RULE # 28. Look @ RULE # 1, # 18, #28, & # 34 for soul equation vs. cloning equation, else RULE # 3.
So, no, use of F.A.T.A.L. as a comparison invokes Godwin's by over-exaggeration.

I am both, about 70% xbox and the rest is PC. It used to be the other way round. I just prefer an analog stick in everything now, even in my FPS. I dunno, I just hate mouse and keyboard controls more and more as time goes on. The one thing PC does have is RTS games.
I see what you're saying though. Some PC gamers act like consoles are for kids and that PC gamers are "real" gamers, but thats not a PC gamer thing to do, that's a douchebag thing to do.

This is just a versus thread in disguise.

The only inarguable truth about PC gaming is that given a great gaming PC the game is going to look and run better.

I also like the personal nature of a PC. Console players argue "i just like to sit on the couch and relax when I play games." That's great, for me it's the opposite. I like to become a recluse and lose myself in the game. A horror game is more horrific if you have headphones on in an isolated room where no one will disturb you, for instance.

it should share a place with the Dreamcast, if you have the cash/knowledge the PC can be a great machine its also fully backwards compatible (unlike the 360 and PS3) and doesnt require the breaking of warranty to make it homebrew enabled you can also mod games and make backup,s of save files without problems

Oh how I envy my grandchildren who will look at me funny every time I speak of the Great Console and PC Wars of the turn of the millenium and go back to playing their portable entertainment systems. The truth is (this coming from a PC owner and advocate) that the aneurysm-inducing frustrations of maintaining a PC give them a temper to match the adrenaline-saturated FPS players that play consoles. Stray cats in a bag, two men go in one man comes out...you get the picture. The elitism is just a facade to hide the soul crushing domineering of our electronic overlords who threaten us with blue screening after (or just before) every achievement if we do not tend to their every whim. Even then you usually get screwed anyways. Just treat PC elitists like the old uncle/grandparent that constantly regales you of their war stories (from battles they weren't even alive for) and how easy your generation has it: just lovingly pat them on the hand and reassure them then go back to ignoring them.

biggest back catalog, longest running online support, emulators offer better PS2 backwards compatability than the PS3 does, technically more robust.

Expense and knowledge are the weakest points however knowledge once gained no longer becommes an issue and price depends on who is writing the cheque.

Fair enough, though that little ditty you posted made my point for me anyway.

Complexity is not always a plus and can often be a detriment.
Oh no, of course it's not always a plus. But in the PC's situation, it IS.
Read post 36 for my reasoning on how complexity ruined PC gaming for me.

To me it is one very simple word, "Mods". I'm not just talking about "god mode" or "infinite ammo/lives". I am talking about visual tweaks, gameplay tweaks, performance tweaks, ally tweaks, weapon tweaks, nudity tweaks (oh yeah, it had to be added in), etc. I can go on and on. All of these to me make a game more of a personal adventure. I'm not saying it is better, because it is not, but to me Mods add years to a game that would have died decades ago.

PC gamers are sometimes very elitist (not "most", just "the loudest", as is so often the case). I'm sure they have good reasons for their extremely vocal preference for the PC, but I still prefer my console. Hell, I even think FPS games are better on my 360 (having been raised on consoles - those raised on PC think the opposite). I really like the controller for shooting, WASD+Mouse makes me annoyed. On the other hand, RTS = PC genre in my mind, no question.

Also: People have pointed out the PC is more than just a gaming platform. Well, my current PC can do just about everything a PC should be able to do absolutely fine - except play games made this millennium. Should I buy a whole new very expensive PC just to get the gaming functionality back? Hell no. I'll stick with the console I got for around £150 off the internet.

So, I think it is really not a complicated subject. Consoles really only have the advantage of being simple. This is a pretty major advantage in some areas, for sure. However When it comes to what you CAN do with a PC, the ceiling is just a lot higher.

PC uses higher resolution display, so you can have more details on the screen. The mouse allows for greater precision in a 'pointing' device, so you can make more complete User Interfaces. Updates, mods, and community integration can be done in a lot of different ways with a computer, that currently aren't doable with a console.

For those reasons, PC's CAN be a lot better.

HOWEVER, there is one pretty relevant downside. PC's require more knowledge and understanding of computers to use. A console is a known entity, you plug it in, and it works. A PC is more complicated both for developers and for users. Developers have to guess at what hardware you will likely use, or test on a lot of different ones. Users have to worry if their hardware will run a game, or if the PC itself has problems.

Thing is, of course, for those of us who have a perfectly good computer and are maintaining it well, PC will always be better. We have the skills and bling to pull it off.

I knew how to use the video interface for games since I was 10...It's not that hard, just buy a computer with all the crap in it, and if you don't like it, Upgrade it! Don't know how? Geek Squad! Then again this computer has lasted since 2002, and I've only upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and upgraded the graphics card to support Lost Planet 1, and when I play high-settings games like Alien Swarm or Starcraft 2. I tinker around with it, fixing shaders and stuff until eventually HUZZAH! I can run on some high settings here and there, and it looks not-so-hideous enough to actually play without cringing every 0.5 seconds.

NOTE: I play PC games mainly due to Dedicated Servers, and MOSTLY free downloadable content.

If the topic of this thread was WHY PS3 gamers? or WHY XBOX gamers? it would be shut down in a heartbeat.

I have spent the past week trying in vain to fix my broken ass PC which decided to up and die on me for no reason whatsoever, causing me to lose 600 GB of data, and having to install and re-install Windows twice today alone, even now as I type this I don't know if the problem is solved or has simply gone in to remission, while my Xbox, PS2 and PS3 have sat there working allowing me to blow off the anger this infernal device has caused me over the past few days so I'd say no in fact PCs are not clearly better, they merely have advantages, they also have severe disadvantages as does any console out there, there is no best, there is merely a best for you.
Here's the thing though, it most certainly did die on your for a reason, you just don't know what it is.
It's like when somebodies car dies, they go "stupid thing just died on me for no reason!".
And to carry on with the car analogy, to some people consoles are to PCs what a standard economy sedan is to a fully customized manual transmission mustang (or something, I know dick about cars).
The people who customize their cars and know the ins and outs of it tend to turn up their nose at the people who just buy a regular old car because its cheaper and it'll do the same thing.
People who buy the basic car maybe don't see the point in all the dicking around, and just want to go to work.

Despite all this, nobody on either side is going to deny that the mustang is way more badass, are they?

Im going to break it down. This is not a complicated argument.

PROS:
Gaming PCs are superior in terms of graphics, player input control and custom content. (also there are a lot of really fun indi games only available on the PC, and there numbers keep growing). Games are also cheaper on the PC.

Consoles are superior in terms of exclusives and price.

CONS:
PCs can be fickle. With so much software from different vendors some times conflicts occur and less savvy users get frustrated.

While console exclusives are a pro, they are also a con in that if you have to choose which console you want to buy. (most peoples answer to this is to just buy all the consoles). Games are also more expensive on consoles, due to companies trying to recover the discount in the system.

I think that most people can agree with both of these statements. Lets be honest, the Xbox 360 is never going to look as good as most PCs games if you have a machine designed for gaming.

Now I can already hear the PS3 fanboys chiming in, saying that it looks as good / almost as good etc. Hears the problem with PS3. Its not cheap. It costs the same as a gaming PC, yet still comes with the down sides of consoles.

I own both a 360, and a 1k gaming machine. I bought the 360 because it was cheaper than PS3 at the time, and 360 had a HUGE selection of games to pick from. The choice was obvious.

Once I got my gaming Pc I rarely use the 360, expect for console exclusives.

Well I paid $350 for my pc about 3 years ago, and its been fine ever since...

Still, nothing is, or ever will be top dog. Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses. Saying one is better then the other is just stupid.

I own a beefy PC and all current gen consoles. Trust me, one is not better then the other.
Same except I don't all all current gen consoles.

It's not that PC gamers are more arrogant than console gamers. It's just that among the "my platform is better than yours" people, the PC gamers have the best platform for looking down on the others from, since theirs is the most advanced and has the biggest barriers to entry.
