People hate it, because it was so popular, and its "cool" and "edgy" and "non-conformist" to hate the popular things
Exactly this, in my opinion.

Also, HOLY HELL THIS TOPIC GOT NECROED FOR ONCE INSTEAD OF REMADE.

I think I can die happy now.

People get annoyed that a game they didn't like is so popular. Some people can't stand to see other people who have different opinions to theirs, so they have to fight about it; the more popular the game, the more people disagree with them, so the more enraged they get whenever it's mentioned.
I must say that I am guilty of your first point... :(

Isn't it obvious? It's jealousy, man. I mean, what other game has a Beyonce song named after it?
I like this. It means that when you put a 'H' into the search bar on youTube, the first option on the list is 'Halo', now above 'Hannah Montana', and most of the videos are about Halo, the game.

Im not criticizing them for not liking halo, I never said that you just assumed that (hell I don?t even think halo is all that great), I am criticizing them for taking an argument to the floor and giving no valid explanation as to why, they are free to their opinion but if their opinion consists of nothing but assumptions and mindless criticism without any logic or valid point, spare us the details and just name the video ?mindless halo rant? so we know its just another guy/girl/fan boy/maggot(take your pick) whining about how halo is overrated for no reason. Here is an example, lets pretend for a minute that your favorite game is GTA 4, and I post a video in which I basically say this ?this game sucks, I played this game for five minutes and it was the worst five minutes of my life, god you fan boys piss me off, your so stupid, this game sucks? as you can see I gave no explanation as to why it sucks, I basically just said that it sucks for no particular reason, and consequentially just cost you five minutes of YOUR life listening to me ***** and complain, perhaps this is reaction to fanboyisim, but can you honestly tell me this is admirable behavior?. Yes I have seen people on you tube who gave understandable reasons for not liking the halo games, that?s fine, what im getting at is that a large percentage of people who claim to hate halo do so for poorly founded reasons, and if they do so for good reasons they don?t bring them up, so should I just assume that when someone goes off and starts whining and complaining sometimes calling people who simply disagree fan boys that they have a perfectly logical explanation for doing so, do these people seem like reasonable and logical people to you?

The one thing I don't understand why there has to be such a distinct divide of either hating or loving it. It's not marmite, it's a game and it did a lot for consoles so for that I think Bungie deserve credit.

However, playing the first game single player on the PC and multiplayer on the XBox I thought it was alright, ya know... nothing special, it wasn't outstanding and didn't live up to the hype and the multiplayer was far more worth the time than the single player but at the same time it wasn't utter trash and not even worth looking at.

Is it so hard to form an opinion that's not either absolute adoration or utter disdain?

It's not so much that lots of people hate Halo, it's just more that lots of people angrily hate Halo.

There's probably just as much hate for MGS and SSB, but the Halo haters tend to be more vocal and, for lack of a better descriptive term: 'Up-their-own-ass-douchebaggery'

Fo' Shizzle.

Most people hate Halo to be popular. Once again, it's easiest to pick on the big guy. I agree that it didn't deserve all the praise it got, but someone's got to get it. I assure you, it wouldn't be any different if Half-Life 2 was placed in its shoes.

I do have a theory. If Master Chief was replaced by Gordon Freeman in all of the Halo games, they'd be received far better by Half-Life fanboys (I don't mean Half-Life enthusiasts, but people whose fandom reaches into irrationality).

The more someone tries to push something down our throats, obviously we try to spit it out. Giving a game perfect scores, when no game is perfect, is the equivalent of shoving Halo down our throats. The people who seem to defend it to their dying breath are shoving it even deeper. Claiming perfection is the easiest way to have everyone turn on you, regardless of what they think.

Halo is not great!
*unsheaths troll slaying knife* Leave here, and go back to 4chan. Now.

OT: people bash it for the fun of bashing something, I thought halo was pretty damn good on my first play, easy to pick up, difficult to master. Not perfect, but one of the better games Ive played on multiplayer, the best multiplayer FPS.

Let's get something straight, all right? Halo 1 was good. The reason I hate Halo 2 and 3 is because they started pandering to the retarded, backwards, pig-raping multiplayer jackasses and balancing the entire game, including the solo play, around that. If you're gonna do that, just make the game completely multiplayer. It worked with Team Fortress 2.

Halo is like a beached whale being crushed under it's own weight.

In many ways it was revolutionary to the FPS genre. And so it inspired a massive fan base. Which has turned on itself as no one likes appearing like a fanboy. Well some people do but they're just weird. Thus the whale analogy.
