Because people want to be unique, same reason college kids hate capitalism, war, religion etc.
Just like there is GTA4 hate when people loved it when it came out.
OMG! You're right about the college kids! It's all I see/hear on campus.

At any rate, back to the topic at hand.

I suppose there is so much hate for Halo because many people have blown it up to be something it is not, and others who disagree simply get tired of it. I hear so many people calling Halo the, "Greatest game franchise of all time," and, "The greatest FPS ever made," and all I can think of is how many new and interesting ways I can shove a sock down their throats so they will shut up.

In short, the hatred for Halo comes from the ridiculous, "Fanboyism," and the refusal for some to admit that there are indeed better, more interesting games out there.

I liked Halo when it first came out, but I think it kinda went down hill from there. It was a cool idea that spawned some ok games. Are they the best games ever made? No, they certainly are not.

Because it's only average and many of the fans are tards who revere it as though it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I used to be a fan of the Halo series, especially the first game, but I've realized that there's not really anything that great about it.

That being said, the haters are extremely annoying as well. I can very much appreciate people who level reasonable criticisms of the game. However, it's impossibly bothersome people who rant about all of its flaws not so the developers can try to better their games in the future, but rather so the fans will feel insulted.

Actually, I personally find the rabid haters to be worse than the fantards.
Halo is not great!
Lolwut?

Please do the inept a favor and point out the spot in my post where I said it was.

Bonus points if you can find the bit where I said just the opposite.

I see no reason to hate Halo.
It's popular for a reason.
Bungee puts a lot of effort into those games, and making them as fun as possible.
I'm not really into FPS, but I have had a lot of fun on Halo 3 because of Forge/Foundry map.
Sure, it's not the best FPS, but it's a damn good one with more features and replay value than most of the other games out there.

Halo set a new standard. That true FPS's could exist on the console. Add to that that it had great graphics, a well played story, and a great multiplayer. It attracted a huge fanbase and became the original reason the xbox did so well. Naturally, there are the "non-conformists" who just love to separate themselves from a popular product. It's not perfect, and I'm not a fanboy jumping in front of Halo to catch the bullet, I'm just stating facts. It's not my favorite franchise, but I can appreciate what it's done for the gaming community and that it is a very successful endeavor and a landmark of gaming history

I already informed him about that: alas, he is suspended at the moment and will be unable to respond for a time.

i think most people bash the halo franchise because it is the game everyone is trying to be, which makes no sense. people should lay off on the arbitrary blugeoning of halo in the sense that they should make valid points about the game itself and not the fanbase or the hype that is created when a halo game comes out. and we should all stop wasting our time bickering about games that don't suck and turning our focus towards games that deserve it a good beating. Two Worlds comes to mind ;)

Meh, by the time he gets back, nobody will care about this thread anyway.

I guess the escapist is a good place to discuss what games are overrated and underrated, and i've noticed that one of the most games is Halo series. Let me say that i'm not so much defending Halo, as i thought the original was good but the two sequels were too much of the same, but why particularly Halo. There's not nearly as much talk about Half-life 2, Gears of War, Bioshock and such being overrated, or at least not comparing to the ammount of Halo bashing there is. So to hone in on an example, why so little Half-life 2 bashing. I'm actually a big fan of Half-life series since the first one, but i still think HL2 wasn't quite what i'd call great or excellent, but that's a different story. So is there any reason why there's so much freedom in bashing Halo in contrast with other mainstream games?
Halo had way too much hype for its own good. When Bungie didn't deliver (well, as much as they should have), people start to bash it. It's yet another case of 'it's easier to pick on the big guy'. Really, most people just say they hate Halo to be popular. A bit like about 50% of this site with regards to atheism.

As for Half-Life 2, it was the revolutionary sequel to a revolutionary game. Bioshock was pretty hyped at first, but upon playing it turned out to be so much different from the trailers... in a good way. I never played Gears of War, but with Halo, it was a mediocre finale to an epic franchise. It wasn't bad at all, just a disappointment for most.

I can't help but feel that some people missed the point of this thread. Alot of people are arguing about whether about how good the game is. As the OP, my intention wasn't to defend (or bash) Halo, or to spawn discussions or whether it's a good game or not. Just that Halo seems to particularly have a haters fanbase. The ammount of Halo bashing i've seen is unbelievable :0, maybe because of it's large popularity. I personally don't like Halo that much seeming as i only really like games for singleplayer, but that doesn't mean i should go around telling Halo fans that they're wrong or that the games i like are better. And similarly i'm not saying that people aren't allowed to dislike Halo, because if you don't that's also fine, but why do so many gamers feel such a need to tell Halo fans that they're wrong.

Because games I liked that are better in every possible, tangible, write-down-able, tallied fashion are ignored, shut down, and replaced by watered down, easier, simpler games.

Especially in the FPS genre in 2001.

People hate it, because it was so popular, and its "cool" and "edgy" and "non-conformist" to hate the popular things
