Why was God of War so great?

I'm not going to bias, but I never understood what was so great about GoW. I hated it from start to end and thought that it was a piece of Greek shit. I like myth and fantasy and I felt that Gow just wanted to put emphasis on gore and nudity. I hated the oh so respective combat and the ever ready "Fuck you button" that had a bright red "Use in case of emergency" label above every enemies head. I mean really. The story, oh God. A mellow drama about a stupid Greek general who accidentally killed his family then gos on a killing filled ***** quest to kill the God who made him do it. Maybe he should have paid more attention to who he was slaughtering! I also blame this game for starting the trend of quick time events. I would love to know what other people think because I seem to be the only one who thinks this and I think that this game was far too popular. However that is only just me. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone.

God of War had for the time nice graphics, a good combat system, a not that bad story and really good boss fights. Also blood and the weapons.

If you don't like it that's ok. I also don't like some popular games and I don't know why people like it.

And you should blame Resident Evil 4 for the QTE's not God of War. God of War just did them right.

Hack and slash dungeon crawlers are great. I agree.

it was a mediocre hack and slash with a dodgy camera, terrible platforming sections, shitty plot and for no apparent reason everybody loved it,
(then the developer bitched about every other game which came out for a while and said it was bad for the very same reason his game was crap)

I didn't really think much of the game, even though I like some hack and slash games like Ninja Gaiden. As for story, for all of the main character's bad-assedness, I couldn't really take him seriously. Okay, a badass character is a good thing, but if it backfires, then I'll think less of him.

Maybe most of the people that played it had a different opinion on it's quality than you did (crazy thought).

I personally thought it was what every 3d Castlevania wanted to be (minus the greek setting).

It had some VERY beautiful backgrounds, nice looking models, a very tight and visceral combat, and the dialogue and story were both good enough that you could ignore them rather than being offended by them. I wouldn't say that God of War did anything unique, but it was a good experience and had no flaws major enough to ruin it.

The story is a little deeper than that. In the fury of slaughter he killed his own family under a sort of "spell" from Ares. Hopefully with no one to care about he would be the ultimate killing machine. And I don't feel like typing about the symbolism, methaphors, and deep, underlying themes.

But I still don't see what makes so damn good either to be honest. It can be fun but I don't get why it's the most uber fucking game ever in the eyes of GOW fans everywhere.

Quicktime events are cool on the really big monsters though :D

most the people who played it probably think Halo is the most innovative fps ever, or that only children play Mario games, or that graphics and fancy animation and someone telling you something is good over and over again makes it THE BEST GAME EVAR.

It's like asking "why is Gears of War so great?" GORE and it's just all-in-all fun to play for some people. You don't like it? Nobody should condemn you for it, its not for everyone.

Once again, fantastic job with the generalizations. Why is it that when someone disagrees with the popular opinion they do their best to invalidate said popular opinion?

I loved God of War for the scale, the drama, and the brutality of the combat. They hired Linda Hunt to narrate, which elevated the story above most game stories. I thought it was well-crafted, never feeling that I was fighting "the game" rather than the enemy onscreen. I despise QTEs usually, but I thought they worked in GOW because they are a break from all the button mashing.

because it amuses me.
anyway, it was after all a hack-and-slash which does kinda lower it rating it the gaming world as generally they get boring also i hate how every game reviewer loved it and praised it combat system despite it being as deep as destiny warriors.

Wrong answer. Before RE4, there was Shenmue back in the days of Dreamcast. Nice try though.

God of War is fun because of the combat and kinda because of the story, even if it is pretty simple (that's my opinion at least). The combat feels pretty visceral, though I admit the obsession with bare breasts is a bit overdone. You don't have to like it, and no one else has to hate it. Opinionate away, just no completely unnecessary cursing/bashing/hating! (yes, I did just make that word up)

I enjoy these types of games, so god of war is obviously a great game to me. This is because it does every element of the action hack n slash genre so well its impossible to ignore. The puzzles are well done, the platforming is challenging but well thought out as well. And then the combat is so beautifully put together with a smooth control scheme, as well as supper cool blades combos and insane violence. And even the story is decent. Its the best action hacknslashers will get (plus the ps3 needs something to look forward)

You missunderstood my post. I know that Shenmue did QTE's first but Resident Evil 4 made them popular.
