everyone who said "but oblivion had horses!", yes it did.

AND THEY SUCKED.
Shadowmere [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Shadowmere] would like a word with you. She's killed more bandits than I have. >,>

It's also really, really fun to cast Waterwalking on your horse.

In theory a nuclear detonation should create an Electro Magnetic Pulse which would fry the electrical system in a modern car. No electrical system, no ignition.

A car should be buildable, but who would have the knowledge or technical skill outside the Enclave (who already have choppers) or the Brotherhood (who don't share technology)?

Huh. Turns out that I missed the reference in Fallout to The Master's steam-powered trucks [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Steam-powered_trucks]. However, how those could be used is still beyond me, and I still can't find anything that explains why a single Chryslus Motors Highwayman could escape destruction, along with its parts and upgrades, to be used in Fallout 2!

Sorry to break the flow of the thread, but was I the only one who found it odd that you could drive a fully working car across the wastes in Fallout 2?
Until the boot disappeared as a result of some bug or other. Taking all your equipment with it.

It is not "was" it is "were". Note the plural sir; it is tiresome to point this out (and yes, it is necessary).

There "was" no vehicles because having a vast array of fully-working vehicles would completely destroy all immersion and the fact that you are supposed to be living in a nuclear wasteland. It really doesn't suit that kind of atmosphere. Of course, there are still post-apocalyptic drive-'em-ups, but really, it wouldn't suit Fallout, and defeats the point of EXPLORATION.

I'll agree that a vehicle wouldn't serve any useful purpose to an exploration/savaging game. The roads don't take you to nearly as many locations as there are, and the land isn't designed for vehicles.

The cars are obviously nuclear powered, based on their explosions and the leaking radiation after the explosion. However, they probably are dead from the EMP of nukes going off in the area 200 years ago. Any working vehicles would probably have to have been built afterward, where supplies and experience would now be at short supplies.

Gas would have been destroyed in the heat of the blasts. Any that survived would have been used up for generators, which we see in the game here and there. Power is more important than a car, afterall.

Building a fusion or fission car would probably be impossible in the wastelands. I mean the people of Megaton couldn't even disarm a nuclear bomb. No one knows how to build a nuclear car.

It's possible someone could build a electric powered car, but again, you'd rather any batteries used for weapons or running machinery for food and water.

In the end, most people don't need a car because no one is in any rush to get anywhere. Everywhere sucked, so you just stay where you are and make a meager living there.

Well since very few people would remember how to drive i doubt they would know what button made the car go forward or if it was a car at all.

There are still a fair number of engineers in the wastelands that could figure out how to get a car started, if it was in working condition. They work with computers, robots, water purifiers, and weapons after all.

There was no vehicle because it's completely unnecessary. There was no reason to waste all that time programming it.

no fuel...
There is enough fuel. They could have set it up but as others have said the maps are way to small. For Fallout 2 it worked but I really hated how many cells it ate up. It's like plasma rifle... or car. Hmmm
