First, a preamble.

We've all noticed that on the forums people tend to be overly critical and harsh, and having attended the Escapist Expo this year I know for a fact that we aren't all that way. Some of us just don't have anything we want to talk about, or don't like to bother or talk to people, so comments about "omgherd, reviewers are biased, EA bought you guys out" tend to take up a larger space than they deserve. Having attended the Escapist Expo, however, I know that the community at large is far more positive than that, and I think it's time we do something nice for our wonderful staff.

In the spirit of that, I wanted to create this topic; A place for positivity ONLY, meaning any negative comments are off-topic and don't belong here, and where we can all share some of the love we have for the Escapist and tell why we love this place so much.

I'll start;

I've been with the Escapist for a long time, I joined back when Yahtzee's ZP episodes were first previewed by XPlay on G4. It has always been a place for me to Escape to (See what I did there?) when I felt like nobody else in my life understood my passion for gaming. I'd come here and read articles, watch the videos, and through this site I've been introduced to so many different facets of the gaming community. I would have never known about Loading Ready Run, for instance, without the Escapist.

The Escapist also helps my wife understand this particular side of me. In case you couldn't already tell, I am a huge video game geek. I love 'em, can't get enough of 'em. My wife, less so. She's a literary/theatre geek, which I am as well, but whenever I talk about video games her eyes tend to get this glassy look because she just doesn't understand. But through the Escapist, I'm able to show her my world better than I could ever explain it in on my own.

I could go on for several more paragraphs, but I'd like to hear what other people have to say, and I'm sure the staff would as well.

So, let's talk about why we Love the Escapist!

The lack of trolls, the brilliant community, the badges, the fact everyone is nice to each other.

I like this site because of reasons

Actually I like it because of the interface, decent community (we're not brilliant in my eyes, it's a gaming forum after all) and mods who don't just lurk in the shadows, only coming out to strike people down with their banhammers.

Great interface compared to other sites, no signatures, and everyone is pretty nice. If they disagree with you, there's usually a pretty coherent retaliation instead of just swear words.

The people are great, most of them anyway. Also I couldn't live without Zero Punctuation and The Jimquisition.

There are no people who immediately call out "YOUR MOM!" when their argument is questioned. Well, there was that one time where some guy responded with "well, we call people where you're from retards anyway" to a perfectly reasonable question.

To the rest of the forum's credit every single other person on the thread ripped the absolute piss out of him in a calm, non-sweary manner. Think he then went crying over to the other side of The Internet after that.

The mods are pretty cool, the shows are... Decent but I never bother to watch anything but ZP anymore for some bizzare non-specific reason. Except the Jim Is An Asshole Show. That I have a reason for XD

But let's all be honest here, the underlying reason why we are all still here is to try and witness the next awesome thread derail by Daystar.

Plus I can rant about whatever my flavour of the month is without anyone telling me to shut the fuck up. Hell they even encourage me on occasion!

Now that more people have posted, I can put some more stuff down... :D

Another big reason that I love the Escapist is that everyone involved with it are genuinely enthusiastic about games and geek culture. There's no fake "Why yes, I too play the Halos and Calls of Duty."

The Brovengers. Being one of the admins there has been really fun. I've made a lot of friends there, and it's probably the best thing that happened since I joined this site.

GIFT (Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory) Theory explains it when people are anonymous they feel they can be overly critical or let the fringes of their personality show without repercussion and reprisal.

Well, first and foremost I like how this place isn't a rabbid pig pen like most other forums. Even during the most heated discussions a great deal of courtesy remains noneteless. So thanks everyone, for being generally level-headed, and thank you mods, for keeping the crazies out.

There's also no one in my life who likes to talk movies and games, so this is my only haven for over analyzing and ranting about the stuff I like.

It's a lot more serious than other gaming communities. Also, pony usergroup!

I approve of your cat related avatars :3

OT: The nice community who tolerate my "Delightful" attitude towards life -.-

The great content is a plus too. (ZP, Jimquisition, news section :3)

It's better moderated and contains more decent people who are actually (gasp!!!) courteous to one another. It's overall just much better than most other forums, even if some people here do have a little bit of an elitist problem <_<

Also, considering the only brony I know in real life is me, this is the only place I have found that I can discuss MLP with fellow (fairly level minded) fans.

Hey! Hey, you! Yeah, you there! YOUR MOM!

Yeah, I bet that burns, doesn't it?

:D

OT: Chatting in the Brovengers has done wonders for getting me to actually communicate with other people around here. Also, as of a few days ago, a fellow member even managed to get me into LoL, which is a game that I doubt I would ever play alone.
[sub]Obviously I'm absolutely terrible at the game, but it's a learning experience.[/sub]

I also like that, especially in the case of Gavin from Miracle of Sound and Jim Sterling, there are content creators here who will actually post in the forums as well. Something about it just... I dunno, it helps humanize them, I guess? It makes them a little easier for me, a nobody posting on a random website, to actually relate to them.

And while I'm sure the mods have plenty of work on their tables on a day-to-day basis, there are a significant number of them who are absolutely hilarious and it's always fun to see them posting in either a user group or forums or something.

Last but certainly not least - Kross and ThynameisMud. The hijinks they play never get old. Just check out this thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.380059-dont-read?page=1] for the proof of that.

Hard to peg specifically, really.

Other than what has already been said in this thread, I suppose what I enjoy about the Escapist is how varied the topics are, particularly in Gaming Discussion. Now, that may sound like a false pretense, especially whenever a AAA title is released, but I enjoy participating there, too. No, what I am talking about is discussing both new games and old games, especially ones I played during my childhood. Reminiscing on those days just gives me a warm feeling inside.

The community isn't half bad either, and I thank the mods for the great job that they do on a daily basis.

Overall, I love the Escapist. It's a great place for me to hang out, kill time, and discuss the passion that I love: video games.

I like that the community will be critical of others. We all act like twats occasionally. And when we do we should be told to stop.
