They made him a Senator... GAH!.

"You were banished because you're clumsy?"
and then i knew we were in for it.

Now i know George Lucas said

"There is a group of fans for the films that doesn't like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like Terminator, and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike."

but i saw Jar jar as a kid and even i didn't like him that much, granted he has a point, were just too grown up for Jar jar to appeal to us.

I loved him, the fact he crushed everything I loved as a kid in the way he did just makes me honestly love him.

I know that many people find him annoying, but I don't understand all the hatred for Jar-Jar and the Phantom Menace. I think that Liam Neeson (as always) did a great job with the character he had, and while I do find Jar-Jar kinda annoying but I don't hate the character.

I know that everyone is going to have a different opinion, but maybe I'll agree with one of you.
Well, for starters, Jar-Jar Binks served absolutely no purpose in any scene he was in.

Ignoring his terrible dialogue and impossibly bad character, Jar-Jar is utterly pointless.

Watch the movie again. The one and only impact he has on the actual plot is to lead the way to the underwater city, something that could have been done by a bit player. There was no reason for Jar-Jar to become a member of the cast and he does absolutely nothing of any importance from then on.

If he were removed entirely from the movie, it would have changed literally nothing, no part of any proceedings and that is a very bad sign for a character.

Essentially, a clear indication that Lucas has no editors at all anymore, as no editor would permit a character with literally no impact on the plot to have THAT much screen time.

Oh god, why did I start reading the title in his voice?

I don't hate him, but I am not much fond of him either.
i did the same thing. But i think hes just too "weird" to even be alive in the movies, like the jedi should have just killed him off

I want you to watch RedLetterMedia's Phantom Menace review [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI]. He doesn't go in to Jar-Jar that much because everyone else already has, but he does go in to why The Phantom Menace is one of the worst films ever made.

He's just not that likeable in my opinion. I think if Jar-Jar was clumsy but a little smarter his character wouldn't have bothered me. He had this whole cool outcast thing going but he can't speak straight half the time and doesn't seem particularly aware of his surroundings at any time. I think his character had potential sadly.

Hey, leave a comment on my web box if you want a pizza roll.

I'm gonna take a guess that the OP is a teenager, early 20s tops. Not to say that you are immature or anything, just that you didn't grow up with the original movies. The tones of the two trilogies are polar opposites. It would be like if someone made an Indiana Jones movie with an unlikable tacked-on character and way too much CGI. Wait.

The original 3 were fun, yes. But they were also powerful, and had characters you could care pretty deeply about. What we got for prequels were candy-coated popcorn fluff. Fun, maybe, if they weren't molesting your childhood. But no depth, no power, and certainly no emotional investment from the audience. Jar Jar is the most visible and vocal symptom of that. He's the tumor indicating the cancer running deep in these movies.

Watch the original trilogy...then watch the new trilogy. The comedy in the original was...more mature. The banter between Chewbacca(Who you couldn't even understand!) and Han Solo was always great, as well as between C3PO and R2D2. Those characters were humorous without actually dedicating their whole act for that sole purpose.

Now bring in Jar-Jar, he just bumbles around and becomes some prestigious general for his people, and then a senator. If anyone saw his antics on the battlefield they would've just given up.

Because he is a silly cartoon rabbit-thing who is in the movies only to appeal to children under the age of 10.

I hate him because he served no purpose beyond "wacky black sidekick" (don't pretend he isn't a gross caricature of a jamaican). If Lucas hadn't had complete control I can't believe for a second that Jar Jar wouldn't have been shit canned in the idea stage just after creating the first line of dialogue.

Interesting fact: I'm told Liam Neeson once said that acting on the Phantom Menace drove him into such a depression he hit the bottle really hard. Mostly it was because he had to act with things that aren't there in places he really wasn't while stuck in front of a the never ending tedium of blue screens.

Because he was a horribly written character, and like you pointed out just annoying. His presence actually pissed me off, I found each time he came into the screen I would roll my eyes as line after line forced their way out of the cinema audio into my fragile ears. It was a rape of all the senses; luckily smellovision has yet to be created.

However I must admit part of the hate you see for Jar Jar stems from just a dislike of the new films. He now represents alot of what was wrong in the new trilogy, or at least that is what alot of people likely associate with the new films. Midi-chlorians for example, I much preferred the hippy magic answer than that shit.
See, now I had this exact same problem with Hayden Christiansen XD

Name one redeemable quality he has. I dare you.
He knows where the Gungans hide!

He was a bit of an awfully stereotypical character with ADHD, still I didn't really hate him. I just think he could be killed off after a couple of minutes and no one would really care.
I'd care! A lot! He was a nice guy!
Okay, I apologize and take my second sentence back. He is a severe case of ADHD nevertheless.

c

There was a net boot leg called the "Phantom Edit"
Jar Jar was removed from all non plot critical scenes, as well his voice was subtitled into a alien form and it was a deep sounding tone almost like Jabbas.... Lucas freaked and tried to shut it down very hard.

And it improved the movie by a hundred fold.

I felt he was just a teensy bit racist. Sure I could just be looking too deeply into things, but sometimes that can be fun. Try switching him out with Tracy Morgan and think just how much the movie would change; it wouldn't.

basicly i hate him for all the same reasons as everyone else has posted here.

the only good thing about the character is found in a web comic http://www.darthsanddroids.net/ basicly its the movies retold as a pen and paper rpg. the character Jar Jar is played by a 8 year old girl, only thing i have ever seen with him actually being amusing.

Hey, you know what makes any battle scene MUCH more tense and enjoyable?

An absolute prat fucking around in the middle of it, accidentally sabotaging his own side and paying absolutely no penalty for it. None. Hundreds of Gungans get shot to death by robots, Jar-Jar fucks around and gets away with it.

Sure did lend that scene a lot of needed gravitas. Did not at all feel like I was watching a shitty saturday morning cartoon. Honest.
