Considering neither Episode 3 nor Half-Life 3 have been announced, no it isn't like DNF. Hell I'm amazed that some players are somehow counting some imaginary development time that the game has been in.

If their was an annoucement or not it is still antisipated and it is this that will be the nails the critics and "fans" ill use to clse its coffin. People don't use the logic "oh well it wasn't announced". If they announced it a day before it came out in 5 years time would it be somehow amazing because it'd only be annunced for 1 day or would it be slaughtered for the long wait?

Oh for goodness sake! Half-Life fans get so whiny and entitled?
To be honest I don't think any of this was to do with whining or being entitled. I think it may just be a debate of if it's in danger of becoming the next DNF.

Also to generalise a question back, why do valve fans become so ridiculously defensive when you say valve may be doing something wrong?

I'm not even on this thread as a half life fan, I think it's terrible. I'm here debating the fact it's so anticipated tat it'll never live up to it.

Half Life 3 (obviously there won't be EP3) is not exactly same as DNF. First of all, it's development cycle was much shorter than DNF. Secondly, it was never hyped by the developer, throughout all these years Valve never released any screens or bits of info. The last thing is Valve itself - it's a fairly small studio (in terms of amount of people), and can not develop many IP's at one time - Portal and L4D franchises took most of it's manpower in last years, however right now they are working on only two known projects, and that's DOTA 2 and HL3. Also, let's not forget that unlike DNF dev, they released games in the meantime, and every single time it is success both in terms of revenue and game quality.

i cant see it being anything that good, because half-life itself is really outdated now, they cant present anything too knew or people will whinge its not a half-life game, but if they dont change anything people will whinge they waited so long for nothing, so the game isnt going to be great, but if they ever do release it, it will probably be welcomed much more then duke regardless of what they do
How exactly Half-Life is outdated? It's story is still the most mature, well thought and rich in detail alien invasion scenario, both in games and more traditional means (books, movies). Graphics are not top notch anymore, but they still aren't bad looking (in HL2, but HL1 is still playable and fun) - what's more, quality and climate of locations makes up for this easily. Also, HL3 was never teased by Valve, they never postponed it, they never released anything from it - it remains in production as long as it is necessary to perfect it, just like it happens with other Valve games (and note, that Valve had never released a bad game - and even studios like BioWare can't say that about themselves)

nope, because we'll neither wait as long, and it wont suck eggs.

and it wont puss out and be an average shooter with 2 weapons and regen health.

and actually funny when it decides to be funny....and no wall tits.

4 years isn't 14.

I will agree that will the amount of hype generated at this point I doubt it will meet expectations.

The most important thing is that the Half Life 2 gameplay is up dated with today's shooter machanics with out losing what's great about Half Life 2 and it's episodes. Enemies with less health, more enemies on screen, better melee machanics, minor rpg elements ect all good. Less health player, regenerating health, cover system, two weapon limit ect Valve have fucked up.

the mechanics are outdated, first person shooter with physics!. its nothing special any more seeing as every developer and their nans have used similar mechanics. graphics- matter of opinion so not really going to comment on that but i never thought the game really looked that good, admittedly this didnt really take anything away from gameplay but still, the over use of the same textures and models was noticeable.
and yeah HL3 has been teased, its been teased since value started the episodic thing, the fact an interview cant come up with some off hand mention of HL3, just searching this site will bring up atleast a dozen articles to do with HL all due to something a developer has off handily mentioned.
also the whole not releasing a bad game thing really comes down to personal opinion, yeah they do good games, but i bet its not hard to find people who would disagree. and besides nothing lasts forever that trend could easily be broken, it only takes one game.

DNF only sucked because it was revived by Gearbox, a pretty momentous task for a fairly average developer.

I will laugh. I will laugh so hard. I will never cease to stop laughing and die of a lung collapse.

But really, as much as I hate to say it with 99% of the people who exist ever suckling on Valve's teats, it'd be a major upset if it went that way. They're a smart company, and Half Life hasn't exactly reached "urban legend" status yet.

Maybe, if you can name a single similarity that isn't stupid.
Huge anticipation for a sequal to a game that was not as good as everyone seems to make out.

The GMan can move Gordan Freeman through time instantaneously, at least, from gordan's perspective. For the rest of... us... we're stuck waiting for... gordan Free...man until the GMan decides its... time... for us to... see... him again. In the mean...time... perhaps we should be... content... that our benefactors have allowed us to... peer... into the darker recesses of aperature science.

To be fair Starcraft 2 had quite a lot of hype. I was expecting it to be godly and I got nothing less.

Valve will be the same because like Blizzard, they've been working on other games and simply has left the game for a bit.

I don't think its going to be the second coming but someone will get their hopes up too high and they'll complain it took too long. So the trick is not to get your hype too high, besides maybe there will be another game that ends up being bundled on and ends up being totally awesome.

Gabe Newell recently had an interview on Moddb.com about various things, and Gabe said there would be no epsiode 3. The studio realized how badly they did with an episodic system so the next Half Life title would be Half Life 3. That being said, Gabe also told that they hadn`t truly begun work on HL3, and that there wasn`t a new source engine yet that there have been so many rumors about.
