It can't be...HL3/HL2:EP3 hasn't been announced yet, so it can't be the next DNF which was announced several times over the course of the last 14 years ;)
Has it not been infered that there will be a HL3/HL2:EP3? in the sense that they were making episodes, and once episode 2 is over episode 3 comes next? yknow, particulairly when they leave things on a cliffhanger and routinely tease it? Kinda the way all us nerds knew there was going to be an Avengers movie long before they ever officially announced it.

No shooter's worth this much waiting, imo, and frankly the story was never good enough to hold me in tenterhooks for 4+ years. Good atmosphere, yeah, but honestly I couldn't care less about minimalistic, ambient, unearth-it-yourself-and-make-your-own-conclusions storytelling than I do right now.

You can polish gold forever but it won't change into platinum. Similarly, you can take a million years perfecting your brand of FPS but you'll still be pointing and shooting. It won't suddenly become MAGIC! or give you a handjob just because you took ten years to make 10 hours' worth of pew-pew. To me it's like the difference between being at 0 degrees and being at -5 degrees: there is one, but I stopped noticing the moment I became numb and used to the idea of being cold.

But I guess I've long since become ambivalent to Half Life. I never found it to be as deep as its fans think it is, and I never thought its brand of plot and storytelling was the ultimate in the video game form. It'll be good, no doubt, but not worth the wait.

ON TOPIC: The next DNF? Haaaaaaaaahahahahahah.

Try being a Shenmue fan waiting for the third installment. Getting constantly teased by Yu Suzuki about how he wants to make it for...how many years has it been now...ten years?

No, because Valve has yet to release a bad game,
Left 4 Dead

OT:I think it will turn out to suck. There's almost no way that anything could compare to something that was created so long ago and popular. It can't come close to the hype, and if they improve the graphics and gameplay, it won't feel like Half Life, but if they keep it similar, then it will play like crap.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing I'd love more for it to be an amazing successor to an amazing series (though I view the series to be pretty good, not great). But in reality, there's just no way. We should just hope for, pretty good, or OK.
