Ever since the disaster over in Japan, a few things have been bugging me. With the death and destruction over in Japan, I keep thinking about what has happened to people like Kiyohiko Azuma and Hiromu Arakawa. IF they are still alive, how will this disaster affect their jobs? Will the anime and manga industries be affected or even placed on standstill by these tsunamis, earthquakes, and nuclear meltdowns?

What do you guys think?

I think they have bigger issues to deal with than Cartoons. Their auto and tech industries are going to be hit hardest.

I hate to admit thats the first thing I thought about when I heard about the quakes.

I feel really bad about it. I gave money to the red cross to help out.

Ya, it really would be great if the Auto Industry got wiped out. It would really mean good things for people around here.

A tsunami killing thousands of people? How could that affect the production of comics and cartoons? I don't see it.

The short answer is yes. plain and simple, the sad truth is that there is always a chance that a artist of some kinda did not make it out alive, are still missing, will have trauma or grief to work through, or may give up the profession entirely. its sad but true.

After the Tsunami people wouldn't have enough resources for luxuries such as anime and manga. There are whole cities to be rebuild, you are looking at least ~6 months to 2 years where people won't buy manga simply because they don't have the money to do so.

Other than that if facilities, office buildings and so forth are destroyed there will be serious delay before publication can start again.

So even if everyone is O.K. (and as far as I know they are), then you will still be a major issue to overcome.

It might effect the production of new productions, but I'm pretty sure anything already finished will be released. Probably not on schedule, but yeah.

And anyone saying "it's just cartoons," ummm... no. They're entertainment. And the entertainment industry is still an industry, and an important industry at that. It equates for a lot of Japan's exports. If California got hit by an earthquake, people would wonder whether or not Hollywood was okay, yeah?

Cartoons are an industry - Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks. All of them are making cartoons, so I don't get your point.

Of course it will. There are people out there simply trying to survive; entertainment isn't going to be much of a concern when food, shelter and clothing are still major issues. There MIGHT be continued development in the southern regions, but even that's a stretch. They need to repair their infrastructure before they can focus on luxuries again.

Who cares?

Anime and Manga is a form of entertainment which is a luxury. And right now luxuries are the least important thing, people are without food and shelter (and clothing). I can't imagine what the car industry must be going through.

But I digress, I personally only say who cares because I think anime/manga is over hyped and kinda dumb (no offense to any fans). People make their living off of making this stuff so if the industry is suffering then I still feel sorry for those whose jobs are suffering regardless of what goods/services they produce.

Yeah but cartoons are entertainment, so, part of the overarching entertainment industry. :3

Anime and manga suck so I don't really care. HOWEVER people still living have creativity as well, so why not invent new series?

I'm wondering why all of a sudden that PC components have jumped up in price all of a sudden. Related?

Are you fucking kidding me? You're worried about fucking mangas and animes of all things? Sorry, but my opinion is: "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT". I give a shit about the crisis in Japan, but I don't give a shit about such pointless things (in comparison to others, like the food shortages and Nuclear Plant crap).

Now I like manga and anime, but how can one even be worried about such a thing now? It even seems rude to me.

I was more concerned about how their economy as a whole was going to recover, what with all the damage to the east coast, the oil refinery catching fire, that whole mess with the nuclear reactor and of course, the hendreds possibly thousands of deaths.

Japan has a bit more to worry about than if it gets it's cartoons on time.
