Windows 7, revolution or flop?

Windows 7 is really, really nice. I'm using it since the Public Beta, and all I can say it's actually fun to work with. To be clear on that, it's really far away from a revolution whatsoever, but it's a shining example for evolution done right. There's not a handful new killer features, but myriads of small improvements, the sum of which makes working on it so much smoother than ever before.
Although... I think there's one feature, and I'm a bit thrilled to see how long it will last in its current form: When I installed the final version last week, I was amazed to see that I literally didn't have to install any drivers. AT ALL. I just plug in anything and Windows connects to Windows Update and gets the necessary drivers all by itself. I love that, and I hope Microsoft keeps putting some effort into it (maybe charge device vendors a little?), because this really removes a great deal of the hassle for unexperienced users (and, frankly, for the experienced users, too: It's not that I minded installing drivers much, but really? Can't say I miss it. Not at all). So, way to go, Microsoft.

Doesnt bother me, my college gave me the following legit versions (with my own key code from microsoft)

Vista 32 and 64bit
Windows 7 32/64bit
XP Server 2008
VB 2008
XP SP3 Pro 32/64.

...Sadly I can only run XP on this pitiful computer. Q.Q

I'm happy with my Vista.

From what I've seen of it (not a lot), I don't really see much difference.
If you were eligible for a free upgrade, I recommend it 100%

It surprisingly doesn't take me an hour to move 5 GBs from one folder to the next.
Nor does it eat all my memory <.<
I don't know if you're implying that it takes that long to transfer files in vista or not, but I feel the need to point out that since I've been using vista (which is since pre-release 2) I've been transfering large files (>30gb) across hard drives and they rarely take longer than 5-10 minutes. If it's taking that long you might have something wrong with your hdd.

I highly doubt there is something wrong with my HDD.

..considering it's working fine on Windows 7.

So am I. The only problem is that its needs memory space like a pig.

11 GB for WoW? WTF?
Meh, I have a 200GB harddrive.

Meh, I have a 700gb hardrive.
Meh, I have a 1.36 TB harddrive.

Meh, I have 4 2TB drives, so what? Let's face it, it's REALLY hard to fill up all available space with games, even if you wanted to.
Back to topic, Win7>XP>Vista, there's no point in keeping XP these days, unless you're running a rig that should be left in a museum. If you really want to play old games, get a virtual PC running with XP.

I hated, hated, HATED, Vista. I jumped from XP to 7 when the RC 7100 build came out. A couple of days after I installed it, I deleted my XP install. It's freaking great. I've noticed a boost in FPS in games, and I've had less problems with having them run properly.

Very weird, as I said, I have been regularly moving files across hard drives for some time now on my vista based desktop, Strange that it would effect some computers and not others.

well here's the thing it WAS slower than xp is, even on better equipment, slower pcs with xp was still faster and booted up and ran stuff better.
Should probably check more recent data about boot times between the three Windows OSs
xp is still faster on slower pcs than vista is on faster pcs. my older desktop can still boot into xp faster than a laptop with vista loaded. so i stand by my original assertion

Apple's OS's don't work on equipment 3+ years old, in case you haven't noticed Apple also sells hardware, coincidence? I think not, there have been a lot of complaints on th Apple forums for this. As a side note Snow Leopard is being called Apple's Vista. ROFL!!! It deletes user data?!?!?! Shit man Vista never did that. Wonder why they don't mention that on their desperate I'm a Mac and I'm a PC commercials? Also trying to play a game on either Linux or OSX is an ordeal not worth getting into here, Linux not nearly as bad, but try and play DX10, doesn't work. :(
actually vista might not do that but there is that oh so nice activex that is a security hole that WILL allow people to delete your data with little effort. as for the data deletion thing, it happens from time to time, it's called a bug and they get fixed. there's still security holes in xp that will NOT be patched and could easily be considered critical

There is almost no difference between how Vista and Windows 7 handle memory, which is very different than the way XP does, which is to say it doesn't handle it at all. It just lets it sit idle when not in use. Sure Vista and Windows 7 will require a little more overhead so a game that needs 1 gig in XP will use 2 in Vista, but the standard for RAM is usually 4 now anyway and with the price of RAM what it is there is no reason not to have more. I won't even get into the brutal security flaws of XP, when running it in a business environment it is truely a security nightmare.
actually win7 and xp have about the same memory usage, vista on the other hand has well over double that. also the standard for ram is NOT 4 gigs as much as you'd like to thing it is, it's not.

as for business environments, xp is pretty darn easy to deal with, auto pushing updates from a central server is a great thing.

Sure a lot of gamers know hardware, but that is the easy part, software and maintenance is the hard part and many PC gamers are clueless when it come to that. Look at the XP clingers, despite all the data that shows Windows 7 is better for all games than XP some will still saty with it. They seem to have no idea Windows XP ended it's support run in July, yeah it's over... Last July. There are only security updates now till 2014. If you stay with XP your future is software conflicts. Good luck with that XP clingers. lol
funny how no major corporation switched to vista nor do they have any plans of switching to win7 until well after 2011 and that's not even the majority of them. it's also funny how m$ is more than willing to keep extending the date of ending support for xp, cause too many people want the support for it.

On topic I switched to Windows 7 at the beta, still dual boot Vista Ultimate 64 bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have the free upgrade to Windows 7 (New Sager NP9850). Every comp in my house runs either Vista or Windows 7. For me XP died years ago.
then really you don't know much about computers as you'd like to claim, xp is still going pretty strong and judging by the reaction to both vista and win7, it is probly their last greatest os they had

Like with every other Microsoft OS release there is nothing revolutionary about it but you'll have to get it anyway. So it's just another OS release?

Mind you MAC-people there is nothing revolutionary about any Apple OS either.

the complaints comes from that every time that they come out with a new os, you NEED more ram and cpu power. however with other operating systems, that's not always the case and most of those will also run as fast, if not faster on the same equipment, with some exceptions.

if you want a good case in point, check out either linux, unix or their bastard child called osx. they actually still run well on older equipment when a new major version comes out, linux in particular became a LOT faster when switching from the 2.4.x kernel to the 2.6.x kernel. also most of the stuff that have been in those os's have been just recently appeared in win7 or vista and are being claimed as "revolutionary"

so the whole "i'm a mac" and "i'm a pc" thing has a LOT of validity. they were actually taking complaints of m$ os's and making them into a highly successful ad campaign, so much so that m$ actually tried to copy them

If it was all up to the software we'd all be using a Linux distro.

Perfect. My Vista killed my laptop performance. I just did the 7 upgrade, and now, my laptop is flying. For instance, when streaming, i would often be at 100%. Now I'm at 30 to 40% due to 7's superiour efficiencies.

It is enough to make a grown man cry. My old laptop flies now.

I love it. I never used vista and just stuck with XP all those years. However I heard all the good reviews for 7 and decided it was finally time to upgrade. My system boots up a lot faster and there are a lot of neat little things that you find as you use it. Plus I got it for 30 bucks so you can't beat that price! But ya, windows 7 kicks ass. It still has some bugs but nothing major and nothing that probably won't be fixed in the next month or two. GET IT!
Must concur.
I am in the same boat (shunned vista for XP, then upgraded to 7), and I really like 7. Microsoft slimmed down the background components and as a result, 7 is really zippy.
