Windows 8 A new kind of OS

They already have a ribbon interface in Windows 7, and it pisses me the fuck off. I hate the Ribbon UI. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the worst changes to software for years. I didn't spend ages learning computer skills to have things changed to mollify a bunch of people who couldn't install a program from source if they had the manual in front of them telling them how to do it.

The ribbon is limited to stuff like Office in Windows 7 isn't it? Windows 8 has more ribbony goodness than ever.

These screens were supposedly taken from a very early build. One can only speculate and hope the Windows 8 explorer ribbon will be highly customisable so its presence can be made minimal.

Noo! You're making it worse! I hate that goddamn ribbon. I want my menus back, goddamn it! It's just like the stupid dock on a Mac. If I wanted a Mac, I'd buy a Mac! Why is Microsoft trying to make Windows look more and more like OSX? Ribbony goodness my ass! It's all ribbony friggin' badness.

EDIT: I guess it's time to bite the bullet and put some effort into making my games work under WINE. Then I won't need a Windows box on my network at all, it'll just be a glorious collection of Linux boxen.

Don't get me wrong, I like MicroSo. Wait. Seriously. An on screen touch keyboard? Are you shitting me? I cannot express my hatred for this enough. Touch screen desktops are gimmicky enough, but a touch screen keyboard, on a desktop, that's just taking the cake.

I, too, am not in a hurry to "upgrade" partially due to funding and primarily due to it just looks terrible. I've been saying it for years but it's things like this that make me want to just be done with Windows altogether. I could too. I'm just too lazy to make the change.

Cool idea and all...just, actually, no. That kinda sucks. It's gonna be like using my Wii on my PC >.> Or having a media center program running all the time...

Yes, I think Microsoft is now so fixated on copying Apple that they are forgetting why so many people still use and embrace Windows: the freedom of the user to do whatever they please with it. They're getting all excited about integration and making on OS that "does it all--and all at the same time!"

I think I know what all of this is coming from, too. I saw a news special recently on the "Twitter Generation in the Workplace." It turns out, some people (I don't know who) are complaining that the current generation of college graduates looking for jobs are very high maintenance. They don't like to do lots of work for seemingly no results (based on achievements in video games), and they have a very short attention span (based on Twitter and how we seem to exist in a world of "140 characters or less").

So the story suggested to workplaces that smaller goals with frequent rewards and recognition are the best way to keep us motivated. Also, since we're good at multitasking (you know--texting, facebooking, twittering, talking, driving--all at the same time), give us a broad range of things to do rather than ONE thing that's the same every day.

So now, all of Microsoft's focus groups have also come to the same conclusion based on this horrendously offensive generalization. And all of that has culminated in this monstrosity of an operating system, and Microsoft's "Windows Gaming Experience."


God help us all.

You see that little delay when you drag things around the screen, when the window demands half a second so it can artistically resize itself and look pretty? That will get so annoying if you actually want to do anything.

It would work on a phone (the iPhone demonstrates this), but not a PC. I have iOS on my phone because I don't want it to be able to do much because it is just so awkward to do anything complex on a touch screen. I have Windows on my main computer because I want to be able to do things with it without having to wait for the program to tart itself up before letting me continue, or having to delve into detailed descriptions with a UI primarily designed for looking at pictures of unnaturally photogenic people.

Also, isn't this exactly what they originally said Windows 7 would be like?

EDIT: I also find it funny how he has to switch back to how Windows 7 currently is when he wants to access his files. It just shows how useless the flashy touch screen-y interface really is.

My first and foremost point is, do we still have deep control of O/S functions?

Or is it closed off and barely functional a la Mac OS?

Can I make folders with ease? Browse files in the Windows root? Edit registry keys with less than four commands? Or is it just "touch and go," install programs by dragging them to desktop then you'd better not worry about them again?

Still, bravo to Microsoft for actually doing something new. I am cautiously optimistic.

If it's like Windows Mobile 7 OS, it's very closed. I used the new Windows OS for a couple months, and while it's pretty polished, it's even more closed than Apple's iOS if that's even possible...

As it is, this looks like it could be a really cool tablet or even attempt at a tablet PC, but the fact that they allow you to boot in the classic mode shows me they aren't confident enough to force people into using it.

Ugh... never should have left XP. At least my motherfucking wireless adapter stayed ON with XP. Fuck windows 7 and its bugs...
