Windows- the most un-user friendly product ever created

Windows is an incredibly easy to use Operating System for inexperienced users. The errors are usually operator induced. For the technically non-savy and the vocabulary challenged that means you morons are the ones that cause the blue screens of death.

Many people install programs they download online without reading each License Agreement (just scroll on down so you can get Porn-Chess installed, no need to stop and understand what you are doing...) which states that you allow the application to install ad-ware, spy-ware, tool bars, and new registry keys.

Then you use use Internet Explorer because you never read it's fine print either. Internet Exploree is very user friendly...to hackers! Hackers know ignorant users run Internet Explorer so all they have to do is slide beneath the radar and not bother the user with small print at all. These malicious programs destabilize your Windows, not programmer errors!

Even if you don't download anything and just use the computer as typewriter, stay out of your Control Panel or System Settings unless you have read THE WINDOWS MANUAL COMPLETELY. The slightest change made by an untrained user can make your operating system unstable.

I am sorry for being rude...but I get so damn tired of ignorant people trashing one of the most useful and technologically advanced programs ever conceived by software engineers! You try writing an OS that idiots cannot screw up...wait Apple tried and you guys screwed up their OS too!

I have never touched my control panel except to change the speaker volume. I still get bizarre error messages FROM USING THE SYSTEM NORMALLY.

I'm not trashing Windows, read the OP again and you will see I also appreciate it's influence and value on the modern world. I am simply saying that it has parts that could be improved.

[sub]You see, here's my point... in those two posts which seem like simple English to a lot of frequent web/windows users, there are a (adapts thick southern drawl) whole bunch o' big wurds Ah don't git'.

Such as:

Ubuntu (sounds like an African philosophy?)
Linux (sounds like some kind of plastic protractor manafacturer)
Distro (a new chocolate bar? gravy? Ford hatchback?)
Command Line (a military term???)

Obviously you two guys have a relatively clear understanding of the fundamentals of computer operating systems, because you have taken the time and effort to learn or because you have been educated in it somewhere.

However, 99% of windows users (including me) don't have a clue what any of that stuff means and will have no option other than to feel like we are idiots who broke our computers by using it in a normal fashion... is this not a HUGE flaw on Microsoft's part?[/sub]

Ubuntu [http://www.ubuntu.com/] is an operating system [sub](okay, it's a distro, but really that's nitpicking at this stage)[/sub] kinda like Windows, only it's free, doesn't have as much support for hardware / software (it's alright), and is community-developed. It's got loads of software already installed - web browser, word processor, e-mail client, all that jazz.

Cool thing about it, you can burn a copy of Ubuntu onto a CD and boot from it - you'll be running Ubuntu from the CD without installing anything. good for trying it out without any obligations, although it would be a little slower than actually installing it

It's pretty easy to use, but if you're unlucky you might have a few hard times getting some stuff to work, which takes it from being very user-friendly to a bloody headache

doubt it would see widespread use, nowhere near Windows or OSX. after all, it's still Linux. it's best for a geek to install it, then the user can use it without many worries.

Yes, you are correct, these are all things that are completely reasonable for the most common by far operating system to demand from someone who knows nothing about computers. Clearly people that have never used a computer before or have little experience doing so never should use one ever, and should leave such advanced technology to higher lifeforms such as yourself.

Since Windows is the most popular OS, the majority of people will stick to it. If we could move everyone over to a new OS that was very userfriendly (If one exists), that would be fantastic. But we can't. So, to avoid having to learn every un-userfriendly OS out there, people only need to learn one. Windows.

You are absolutely right.

Therefore is it not the case that it would be a very sound investment in thier financial future if Microsoft were to spend more time and money fixing the flaws in its system so future users will be more likely to stick with it in the face of very probable competition from other developers?

Linux is NOT user friendly. Anyone who is used to using Windows will pull their hair out trying to understand Linux. I know because I'm in college for IT stuff.

Linus IS, however, better than pretty much any other OS if you know how to use it.

The funny thing is, the less complicated Microsoft attempts to make Windows, the harder to understand it gets. I could set up a wireless network in XP without too much problems. Vista however requires a lot of searching for the functions I want. Where Hamachi (A program that simulates LAN over internet to allow easier play with palls who aren't near you) wasn't a problem in XP, I need to put it as "preferred network" manually in some godforsaken window I otherwise NEVER use.

Actually, I don't know. It would seem as that would be a good idea, but then I guess they would have done it allready. Most likely I would guess It's because they can't make it easier. It seems like every release of windows has been an effort to simplify. A failed effort, but an effort none the less.

It think that you cant have a perfect OS for everyone. The hard part for the developers is trying to find the perfect balance between user friendliness and functionality. One one end of the spectrum you have mac OSX, which is dummied down to the point where you only have one mouse button. On the other end you have linux, Witch you can do practically anything on, but press control-alt-f1 on a linux box and you'll make inexperienced users cry. Windows is some where in the middle.

What does ctrl-alt-f1 bring up anyways?....

But Windows seems to be a lot of trial and error. They can't account for just about everything that could happen, so you have to figure it out yourself. It helps you become more tech savvy, but it's still a pain in the scrotum.

Windows isn't any less user friendly than Mac or Ubuntu. You install crap and go to the menu to find it. Right click, and you can add short cuts. Get some anti-virus software, like avast, or else you'll see unwanted pictures of donkeys raping women. Easy, peasy.

At least I don't need to spend an afternoon getting my wireless card to work, Ubuntu.

Using Windows is not a herculean feat.

I have had a couple of errors on Vista Home Premium x64 but I've left my computer on for weeks at a time.

I still run Windows XP Home Edition and yet with both,I haven't had hardware trouble with any device. PSP,digital cameras,bluetooth devices,cellphones..

What a lot of people seem to forget is that Windows has to work with EVERYTHING..so there is a LOT of backward compatibility issues and 3rd party support can be sketchy.That 10 year old HP printer might work fine,but if a company has to re-do a driver and their only release is a buggy driver for XP or Vista that was hastily coded or improperly coded..then it's tits up..

Computers and OSes aren't perfect because the people that created them are not perfect.
